My Testimony by Will Turek
We hadn’t taken a vacation in 10 years
so when the prospect of a week in
Florida came up to celebrate Lesley’s
parent’s 50th anniversary, we made
plans! We borrowed a 12 passenger
van from the Baum’s and the first day
made our way to Birmingham, Ala.
where we spent the night.
The next day my in-laws joined us and we started the short
5 hour journey to the Fla. Panhandle for our week on the
beach. Our GPS directed us to take a short cut so I got off
the highway and on to a state route that looked like it had
been cut out of the woods. Matt, my son, and I said a
rosary as we drove.
Just as we were finishing praying, I caught sight of a white
Honda in my lane coming straight at us. He was moving at
a high rate of speed. I was barely able to avoid the Honda
as he raced by me. He had forced us off the road where
there was no berm, just a steep decline into the trees.
Large vans have a tendency to tip and that was the one
thing I was trying to avoid. I did manage to reach the road
again but we ended up on across both lanes and off the
road on the other side. Providentially there were no cars
coming from the opposite direction as I pulled the van back
on to the road and towards the right lane. Meanwhile there
were various shrieks and screams coming from all our
children who were scattered throughout the van.
At that point I thought maybe we had made it without any
damage to the borrowed van and we were all safe! But the
SUV that had been behind us crashed into the front
passenger side precisely where Matthew was seated. The
impact took the entire front end of the van but left us with a
small jolt that was really quite bearable. That van saved
our lives! But I came to realize that the van was only a
“vehicle” in the hand of the One who really saved our lives
– God!
We learned a lot of valuable lessons on that road in
Alabama that Saturday in June:
• Life is precious and can be taken away in a
moment. Cherish it every day. Love your family
and resolve conflict.
• God has everything under control. His angels
attend us constantly. We should thank them & Him
often.
• Prayer works. We should pray every day, all day.
• You never know when you are going to meet Jesus
face to face for real. Strive to be in a state of
grace. Frequent the sacrament of Confession.
• Wear your seat belt.
• Family really is everything, even when they tick us
off. God wants His family around the table. So go
to Mass on vacation.

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
GROVE CITY, OHIO
Dear Parishioners,
Many have noticed and commented on
the missing picture and relic of St.
Theresa; they used to hang on the wall in
the prayer chapel at the rear nave of the
church.
For whatever reason, Fr.
Swickard wanted to have these items
returned to him, and so they were.
I have decided to place there a beautiful
icon of St. Francis of Assisi, as well as a
relic of St. Francis that was given to me by
the family of the late Bishop George
Fulcher. The icon, which is on display this
weekend in the gathering space, was
created in Beirut, Lebanon.
Special
thanks to our parishioner, Kevin
Radwanski, who is preparing the icon to
be hung on the wall.
I hope that this
image and relic of St. Francis will offer all
of us cause for devotion, and to seek his
intercession for our needs.
Next weekend I will present at all the
Masses on the financial picture of our
parish family. It has been my goal since I
arrived here to report to all of you once a
year on our stewardship of treasure. In
addition to this report, we have scheduled
a parish business meeting, open to all
parishioners, for Wednesday, October
29th, at 7:00 pm in the Parish Life Center.
At this meeting, we can go into more detail
on our financial picture.
Have a blessed week!
Love,
Fr. Dan

OCTOBER 5, 2014
PRAY TO END ABORTION!
Once again, OLPH will participate in the annual 40 Days for
Life campaign. We will be praying at Founders' Women's
Health, 1243 E. Broad St., Columbus on Sunday, Nov. 2
from 7am-7pm.
We need at least two people per hour to commit to pray
outside the abortion clinic. Many OLPH parishioners have
prayed at the abortion clinic with their faith-sharing groups,
families, and friends.
Like most who have never been a part of the 40 Days for
Life campaign, there may be some questions and
concerns. The Respect Life committee welcomes any
questions and/or concerns. Please contact Stacey Belford
at 614-554-0161 or [email protected] for more
information.
Please consider being a witness for life. We are called to
defend the weak and vulnerable in the face of injustice.
Take a stand today to fight for the lives of those who aren't
able to speak for themselves.
Dedication Concert
There will be a concert to celebrate the life of
Paul Porreca and to dedicate the piano that
has been installed in his memory. The concert will take
place on Saturday, October 25th, after the 5:00 PM Mass.
The piano will be blessed during Mass and the concert will
begin just after the Mass.
Special guest artists will perform, including Chad Baker,
piano and organ professor at Capital University, Jim
Harrison, Natalie Adams, Laura Haney and our combined
church choirs.
The concert is open to the public and is free. Please plan
on coming, enjoying the music and remembering a
wonderful man.
St. Therese’s Retreat Center, located at 5277 East Broad
Street, Columbus, will dedicate its reconstructed Grotto on
Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at 11 a.m. At the dedication,
Bishop Campbell will lead a prayer service and James
O’Shea, the stone mason responsible for designing and
constructing the new grotto, will sing the Ave Maria as a
fitting conclusion to his holy work. All are invited to attend;
light refreshments will be served in the retreat’s dining area
following the ceremony. A special thank you to all who
contributed in any way to make this new Grotto a special
place of prayerful reflection for generations to come!
Calling all Bakers, amateur Chefs, Hosts
extraordinaire, and the people of God in general!
Even those who lack culinary skills can help with $$!
Every Thursday evening we as a community are providing
hospitality for our RCIA participants.
We will need refreshments for a minimum of 35 people.
It could be a dessert, an evening of appetizers, light
sandwiches, or the latest and greatest recipe from the
Food Network!

According to the Second Vatican Council's Decree on
the Church's Missionary Activity, "the people of God, as
represented by the local Church, should understand and
show by their concern that the initiation of adults is the
responsibility of all the baptized." So, if you have been
baptized, I look forward to hearing from you! Thank
you in advance for being a missionary disciple!
