The Sun publishing naked photos of Prince Harry in Las Vegas was the first of these and proves the story most people are aware of at all in this month’s list (9 in 10). Bourne Legacy is the movie release attracting most attention this month with just under 9 in 10 at least aware of it. However, the proportion who are ‘familiar’ with it falls short of other blockbusters in recent editions. Samsung-Apple patent issues have frequently appeared in our lists over the last year but the recent lawsuit verdict in Apple’s favour has been the most recognised with almost 3 in 5 familiar with the story (compared with just 3 in 10 familiar with the legal battle covered last year). Video games releases included in this wave have relatively low profiles with no more than 1 in 4 aware. However, among those who are familiar with these games, they do generate considerable discussion and excitement – see later. 10 10 25% 11% 27% 18% 19% 17% 20% 26% 19% 19% 24% 20% 23% 20% 13% 26% 14% Sleeping Dogs is the title generating most discussion (among 2 in 3) and will have considerable interest from fans of the True Crime series, from which the game originates, having been taken on and published by Square Enix this year. (The other games prove even more talked about but have less discussion overall.) The release of Optimus 4X HD has caught the eye among those familiar (3 in 5), LG’s new smartphone being discussed more readily than Samsung’s Galaxy Note. Both Prince Harry naked and Doctor Who, despite being the news stories people are most familiar with, fall notably down the order of discussion, although the latter still generates a great deal of interaction among 1 in 5 of us. Of the two movies featured, The Expendables 2 has generated slightly more conversation than Bourne Legacy. 14 14 discussion buzz among all respondents, including unfamiliar have/will discuss a great deal have/will discuss a little have not discussed this at all and probably won't it would never occur to me to discuss this unfamiliar (not asked about discussion level) Prince Harry naked Doctor Who 32% 12% 20% 24% 12% 18% 24% 18% 11% Bourne Legacy Samsung ordered to pay Apple 6% Samsung Galaxy Note 6% 16% 13% 6% 59% Expendables 2 6% 16% 12% 6% 59% UK's first 4G mobile network 6% 23% 13% 3% 9% 18% 13% 8% 3% 10% 41% 11% 42% 5% 64% 78% 3% 7% 6%2% 82% Darksiders II 4% 6% 4%2% 84% Guild Wars 2 4% 6% 5%2% 84% Sleeping Dogs 3% 7% 4% 1% 85% Madden NFL 13 3%5% 5%2% 84% Optimus 4X HD 29% 36% 7% Google lowers search rankings © Harris Interactive 7% Looking at the levels of discussion among the whole population, rather than just those familiar, we see the order is broadly in line with that of awareness. Prince Harry naked just tops the poll, ahead of the return of Doctor Who, although the latter stands out as the news story being talked about most in great detail (among just over 1 in 10). The Bourne Legacy is third in our list, just ahead of the Samsung patent infringement story, and notably more talked about than The Expendables 2 movie (although behind other movie releases covered in previous editions of Harris Buzz). The Samsung Galaxy Note generates considerably more discussion among the total population (1 in 5) than LG’s Optimus 4X HD (1 in 10) and is fairly comparable with the level recorded for Samsung’s Galaxy S3 when released earlier this year. base: all GB 16-64 (1,833) Despite being the most discussed from those in the know, low awareness of the four video games means they are at the bottom of this list. 15 55-64 397 2% 19% 17% 11% 50% 9% 10% 0% 0% 0% 10% 17% 1% 2% 1% 15% 7% 2% 1% 0% 7% 2% 1% 1% 0% 59% 63% 95% 96% 99% 13% 28% 12% 8% 38% 12% 23% 18% 15% 33% 12% 22% 23% 6% 37% 6% 24% 21% 14% 35% 11% 19% 21% 5% 44% 9% 23% 21% 6% 40% 15% 32% 13% 5% 35% 10% 29% 12% 6% 43% 2% 15% 14% 11% 57% 3% 12% 10% 6% 69% 3% 2% 12% 4% 10% 5% 3% 6% 72% 83% 4% 3% 9% 9% 13% 10% 5% 7% 69% 70% Total Male Fem 16-24 25-34 Base size 1,833 906 927 200 425 Discuss great deal 3% 6% 1% 9% 9% Discuss a little 5% 10% 1% 7% 17% Have not / won’t 5% 6% 4% 14% 8% Would never occur 2% 3% 1% 7% 2% Unfamiliar 84% 75% 93% 63% 64% Discuss great deal 3% 6% 1% 9% 10% Discuss a little 7% 11% 4% 9% 19% Have not / won’t 6% 8% 4% 16% 7% Would never occur 2% 2% 1% 1% 3% Unfamiliar 82% 74% 90% 65% 61% Discuss great deal 7% 9% 5% 11% 14% Discuss a little 32% 33% 31% 33% 34% Have not / won’t 20% 22% 19% 16% 22% Would never occur 12% 13% 11% 12% 9% Unfamiliar 29% 24% 34% 28% 21% Discuss great deal 6% 10% 2% 7% 11% Discuss a little 23% 31% 15% 27% 34% Have not / won’t 18% 19% 16% 16% 13% Would never occur 11% 10% 11% 9% 7% Unfamiliar 42% 30% 55% 41% 36% Discuss great deal 3% 6% 1% 7% 10% Discuss a little 7% 11% 3% 15% 19% Have not / won’t 4% 5% 3% 15% 6% Would never occur 1% 1% 0 2% 1% Unfamiliar 85% 76% 93% 61% 64% Discuss great deal 6% 10% 1% 11% 12% Discuss a little 13% 19% 7% 17% 22% Have not / won’t 13% 15% 11% 21% 11% Would never occur 5% 6% 4% 4% 6% Unfamiliar 64% 50% 77% 47% 48% Discuss great deal Discuss a little Have not / won’t Would never occur Unfamiliar 3% 5% 1% 7% 8% 1% 0% 0% 9% 15% 3% 12% 21% 6% 4% 3% 8% 10% 5% 15% 8% 5% 8% 4% 3% 4% 2% 5% 1% 4% 2% 2% 78% 65% 89% 60% 61% 84% 86% 91% 4G mobile 18% 21% 15% 9% 38% Prince Harry Optimus 4X HD Madden NFL 45-54 425 4% 19% 21% 8% 47% Samsung fine 35-44 386 3% 23% 21% 16% 38% Sleeping Dogs Bourne Legacy Darksiders ll Doctor Who Expendables 2 25-34 425 13% 36% 13% 8% 31% Google search Galaxy Note 16-24 200 14% 22% 18% 6% 40% Guild Wars 2 © Harris Interactive Total Male Fem Base size 1,833 906 927 Discuss great deal 7% 10% 3% Discuss a little 24% 30% 18% Have not / won’t 18% 18% 18% Would never occur 10% 8% 12% Unfamiliar 41% 33% 48% Discuss great deal 4% 6% 1% Discuss a little 6% 9% 3% Have not / won’t 4% 5% 4% Would never occur 2% 3% 1% Unfamiliar 84% 76% 92% Discuss great deal 12% 15% 8% Discuss a little 24% 25% 22% Have not / won’t 18% 17% 18% Would never occur 11% 10% 11% Unfamiliar 36% 32% 40% Discuss great deal 6% 9% 4% Discuss a little 16% 22% 11% Have not / won’t 12% 14% 11% Would never occur 6% 6% 6% Unfamiliar 59% 49% 68% Discuss great deal 6% 9% 3% Discuss a little 16% 19% 13% Have not / won’t 13% 14% 12% Would never occur 6% 7% 5% Unfamiliar 59% 51% 67% Discuss great deal Discuss a little Have not / won’t Would never occur Unfamiliar 4% 7% 1% 13% 10% 1% 0% 0% 6% 9% 2% 9% 17% 1% 1% 0% 5% 6% 3% 14% 7% 3% 2% 0% 2% 2% 1% 3% 3% 2% 1% 0% 84% 75% 92% 62% 64% 92% 95% 99% discussion buzz demographic breakdown (alphabetical order) 35-44 386 0% 1% 3% 2% 93% 45-54 425 0% 1% 2% 1% 97% 55-64 397 0% 1% 0% 0% 98% 0% 0% 0% 4% 3% 1% 4% 4% 2% 3% 0% 1% 90% 92% 96% 4% 35% 16% 13% 31% 3% 28% 23% 10% 35% 4% 29% 24% 15% 29% 4% 18% 17% 14% 46% 6% 19% 19% 10% 46% 2% 20% 22% 15% 41% 0% 0% 0% 3% 2% 1% 2% 1% 0% 1% 0% 0% 94% 96% 99% 1% 4% 1% 11% 7% 8% 10% 14% 10% 7% 4% 4% 72% 70% 76% 16 Please consider launch/fieldwork dates to place results into proper context NYR = not yet released at time of fieldwork; Sleeping Dogs has a slight advantage over Darksiders II for the total excitement surrounding its release but it is the latter which stands out for having the highest proportion of ‘very excited’ people (1 in 3). LG’s Optimus 4X HD ranks higher than the Samsung Galaxy Note for generating more excitement among those familiar, as it did for discussion – however, as seen overleaf, the lower total awareness pulls it down among the total population. Doctor Who also features highly for excitement but has a greater proportion of people who couldn’t care less than other news topics that feature around it. EE’s announcement to bring 4G to 16 major cities before Christmas has created a stir with half those in the know telling us they are at least somewhat excited. As is typical, new releases and product innovations feature more highly than most tabloid headlines and that proves the case this month with 1 in 2 saying they couldn’t care less about naked royal photos. 19 excitement buzz among all respondents, including unfamiliar very excited somewhat excited not at all excited couldn't care less unfamiliar (not asked about excitement level) Doctor Who Bourne Legacy 7% Expendables 2 7% 20% 22% 15% 19% 14% 13% 7% 12% 13% 9% UK's first 4G mobile network 6% 13% 12% 6% Optimus 4X HD Prince Harry naked Sleeping Dogs Google lowers search rankings 5% 10% 26% 13% 22% 4% 7%3% 2% 3%7% 8% 5% 41% 59% 59% 64% 16% 42% 5% 7% 5%2% 4% 8% 36% 12% 8% Samsung Galaxy Note Samsung ordered to pay Apple © Harris Interactive 16% 82% 37% 29% 85% 78% Darksiders II 5% 5%3% 2% 84% Guild Wars 2 4% 6% 4%2% 84% Madden NFL 13 3%6% 5%2% 84% base: all GB 16-64 (1,833) When we look at excitement across the total population, Doctor Who jumps back to the top of the table with the highest proportion of ‘very excited’ people among both men and women of all age groups. Both movies feature highly for excitement, The Bourne Legacy sitting in second place ahead of The Expendables 2 by virtue of having a greater number of individuals who say they are ‘somewhat excited’. The excitement shown among those familiar with EE’s 4G network is reflected here as the announcement ranks higher up the list than on awareness or discussion. By contrast, the high proportion of disinterested people in the Prince Harry naked photos sees this news story are lower down the ranking.
