Over 600 music students are using the temporary classrooms each day. The Kaimuki Middle School Band Boosters provided the majority of the funding for the project. In addition, Young Brothers of Hawaii Ltd. donated a forty-foot storage container for our long-term use. Our “Music Ohana” consisting of KMS students, parents, teachers, staff and many KMS alumni came together to support this major project, “AWESOME people can do AWESOME things together!” Thank you to the wonderful volunteers that spent numerous days over the summer cleaning, moving and preparing our temporary music classrooms. Your continued support of our school, students and teachers, Is very much appreciated! Exploratory Wheel If you stop by Room B-102, with Mrs. Akau-Naki, you will notice how the 8th grade Exploratory Wheel students will enter with a smile and an "Aloha mai" greeting. They leave their troubles outside and enter to go through a period of routines and drills that exercise their minds by following a daily procedure that begins the class. There's fluidity, rote learning, creativity, and a connection to their world all in an environment of cooperation and support of each other. If anyone falls short that day of expected behaviors of a middle schooler, peers and teacher give the reminders in looks and words (some are in Hawaiian!). Besides working on vocabulary and daily conversation they sing and chant. The craft activities have included: learning to braid and cleaning off the niau of the coconut midrib to make brooms and a game, pala'ie. They've made miniature ipus with kapa and petroglyph designs. Flowers of dyed goose feathers and refurbishing monkeypod bowls and plates, add to the mix of activities. Students are here for a semester and then go to Art class. The 7th graders who are in the Exploratory Wheel class in B-102 are taking a Reading Workshop class. Connecting what is done in class and the students' own life is a constant. Reflecting and writing in a journal along with maintaining a reading log of a self chosen book is part of their day. Weekly discussions of articles from the newspaper continue. The last small group project involved researching an island group found in the Pacific Ocean. This will help them next semester in social studies when they study about the Pacific Islands. Each group wrote an enticing paragraph to invite visitors to their islands. They retold a legend of that island in various forms that wrapped up in a moral of that story from ages past that is still applicable today. Skits and posters were the usual way they told the legends. Of special note, a power point presentation, a woodcarving of a "god", and the eating of a traditional Fijian dessert! Are they getting more hooked on reading and its connection with our daily lives? We think so. ART Wheel The Art Wheel with Mrs. Ajimine provides 8th grade students with a variety of creative experiences, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, and crafts. The purpose of this course is not only to make proficient artists, but also to encourage divergent thinking, visual problem solving, and self-improvement. This is achieved by studying and applying concepts, analyzing and exploring a variety of masterworks and media, and participating in individual and group critiques. Computer Wheel The 6th grade Computer Wheel course with Mrs. Ajimine introduces students to proper keyboarding skills, focusing on technique, speed, and accuracy. Various software programs will be utilized to teach students to create, format, and publish various documents and presentations, with connections made to core content subjects wherever possible. The goal is for every student to be successful and to learn and grow from this course, not only in the world of computers, but also in life. Career & Computer Literacy Click, click, click go the keys as the students desperately try to up their classmates’ scores during the weekly typing challenge game. Welcome to Mrs. Terheyden’s Career & Computer Literacy class and welcome to the world of technology! Innovation is key to exploring this ever-changing subject. This semester students will be engaged in learning the fundamentals of practical application through hands-on lessons in the Microsoft Office Suite. But don’t look at your fingers! Weekly typing lessons have challenged them to focus on their writing content and away from the movement of their fingers. This is a skill that will save them time and frustration throughout their academic career and well into their adult lives. Weekly discussions about technology in the news will keep them up to date with the newest advances in the field. Later in the semester we’ll be using technology to explore career possibilities based on each student’s interests, skills, and values. In addition, we’ll be studying employer expectations and employee skills required to obtain and keep a job. Technology is not limited to cut and dry application, but can be used for creation, discovery and self-exploration. The hope is for the students to not only leave this class with a stronger ability to use the computer as a powerful resource but to also become a more well-rounded individual with a broader knowledge of career possibilities. Oh, and have fun along the way! JOC News Membership The KMS Junior Optimist Club has over 60 student members. The JOC is a community service group conducting projects on weekends.
