EDUCATION Outstanding faculty in the College of Education are dedicated to providing excellence in learning for our future educators. • Graduates of the College of Education are frequently cited as teachers of the year in their school districts and statewide. • Home to one of only two Recreation degree programs in Kansas, students can choose an emphasis in Recreation Therapy, Recreation Administration and Community, Corporate and Hospital Wellness. • The integrated Psychology and Counseling department, which allows the department to offer comprehensive, in-depth programs in each area, has a program in Psychology and the Military, the only one of its kind in Kansas. • The Exercise Science program, one of the fastest growing programs at PSU, offers clinical and non-clinical paths. ADMISSION Frequently Asked Questions How will my credits transfer? Most academic course work will be accepted if the credit was earned from a regionally accredited two-year or four-year college or university. Course equivalency information is available for many institutions at www.pittstate.edu/ admission. Does PSU accept AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) credit? Students completing the AP exam with scores of 5, 4 or 3 may receive appropriate credit. Pittsburg State recognizes the IB Diploma Program and awards advanced standing credit for specific scores on the higher level examinations. Visit www.pittstate.edu/office/ registrar for additional details. Will PSU accept military credit? Advanced standing credits, as noted on the student’s military transcript, will be given to veterans for formal service school courses on the basis of the American Council of Education (ACE). Do I have to have an associate degree to transfer? No, you can transfer anytime as long as you meet transfer admission requirements. Do I have to send all my transcripts? Yes. In order for PSU to determine whether you meet admission requirements, we must evaluate your entire academic history including course work completed at each institution attended. I am in high school and taking college courses. Am I considered a transfer student? No, in order to be considered a transfer student, a student must have completed at least 24 credit hours of college-level course work after high school graduation. 11 FLAT RATE TUITION (pay nothing additional for classes taken over 10 credit hours) and special tuition break programs make Pitt State very affordable. Student Financial Assistance, Scholarships & Student Employment Scholarships, grants, student loans and work-study are important ways to help finance a college education. Student employment can also be a rewarding way to earn financial support. NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning October 1, 2016 (PSU Code 001926) at fafsa.edu.gov. Priority deadline is March 1, 2017. STUDENT EMPLOYMENT The Student Employment Office assists students enrolled at Pittsburg State in finding part-time employment and internship opportunities on- or offcampus. Most positions pay minimum wage (currently $7.25 per hour) and are limited to 20 hours a week. Common positions include: office & lab assistant, cashier, tutor, data entry operator and web page designer. North Campus Complex BOWEN HALL, TANNER COMPLEX and TROUT HALL were renovated between 2009 and 2012. Each hall is co-ed by floor with double occupancy rooms, central bathroom by floor, has a central lobby, study lounge, kitchen area and recreation room. Crimson Commons CRIMSON COMMONS is the newest of our residence halls, completed in the fall of 2010. Each unit includes four private bedrooms with common living room, kitchenette and restroom. First year students who have a minimum 3.50 High School GPA can qualify to live in Crimson Commons building E. Buildings A to D are reserved for students categorized as upperclassmen. 12’6”x15’ desk University Housing wardrobe South Campus Complex DELLINGER AND NATION HALL make up the largest residence hall complex on campus and were renovated between 2013 and 2015. More than 450 students enjoy the option of two or three occupancy rooms, central lobby, study lounge, kitchen area and recreation room. Willard Hall WILLARD HALL is reserved for students categorized as upperclassmen with 2.25 GPA. Willard offers suite style living with two-person and fourperson rooms with bath. Gibson Dining Hall is definitely NOT a traditional cafeteria! Located west of Nation Hall and north of Dellinger Hall, it features a wide variety of fresh food designed to satisfy everyone’s taste. You will find yourself wanting to go back for more, with this “all-you-care-to-eat” dining facility. Gorilla Crossing Gorilla Crossing is the perfect place to “grab a quick bite” or join friends for a meal. It is located on the main level of the Overman Student Center. This newly renovated “food court” allows you to choose between a variety of restaurants that will definitely meet your taste and budget, including burgers, wraps, made-to-order pasta, salads, pizzas, hot subs and much more. University Club The University Club is located in the lower level of the Overman Student Center, right in the hub of our campus. It features Wholly Habaneros and Einstein Bros. Bagels. Wholly Habaneros serves authentic Mexican food, including a delicious selection of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos and burrito bowls. On the other hand, Einstein Bros. Bagels is the perfect place for a quick and tasty meal. It offers a diverse menu ranging from to-go coffee, baked goods, innovative fresh salads, made-toorder sandwiches and delicious desserts. Participating in intramural sports is a great opportunity to develop the essential qualities of leadership, teamwork, and communication, while having a good time. We want our students to have the best resources possible to make friends, have fun and enjoy a healthy lifestyle here at PSU! The Student Recreation Center provides many of these opportunities. Designed for the fitness, wellness and recreational needs of students, this facility features state-of-the-art equipment and recreational areas. The 100,000 sq.-ft., two-story building includes a four-court gymnasium, fitness areas, indoor track and lounge. STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER The most challenging time for college students is transitioning to their new environment. The staff in the Student Success Center serves as advocates to all undergraduate students, but especially to freshman and transfer students in their first year at PSU. The Student Success Center is focused on assisting students with the social, personal, and academic adjustments needed for a successful transition to Pitt State. PITT C.A.R.E.S., FRESHMAN EXPERIENCE AND TRANSITIONS Admitted students and their families attend the Pitt C.A.R.E.S. orientation program. Once on campus, freshmen will participate in both Gorilla Warm-up and Freshman 22 Experience. The Freshman Experience course is designed to prepare students to succeed both in and after college. Transfer students may take Transitions, a course designed to provide transfer students the opportunity to interact with students who are sharing in their same experiences and to introduce students to PSU. A variety of programs and services are introduced during both courses. STUDY ABROAD The world is a great classroom and students are encouraged to go out to experience it for themselves. The Study Abroad Program consists of trips that are from a few weeks long to ones that can last an academic year. Destinations include France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Finland, Australia, South Korea, Peru, Costa Rica, Malta, Argentina, Russia and Germany. Students who participate in our Study Abroad program regularly come home saying, “it changed my life!” Pitt State is dedicated to your success! STUDENT SUCCESS BUILDING COMMUNITY The Office of Student Diversity hosts several culturally enriching programs and activities throughout the academic year. Understanding the value and importance of diversity on the campus of PSU, this office strives to educate and celebrate our differences. Students work closely with the office, participating in workshops, retreats, cultural heritage celebrations, and other activities. STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS The Bryant Student Health Center promotes the health and well-being of students in order to enhance their educational experience. The Bryant Student Health Center provides high quality, convenient, costeffective health and counseling services for PSU Students. GORILLA GEEKS The Gorilla Geeks assist students with various technological needs. Have a copy of your test scores and a high school transcript, including GPA and course grades, available to complete the application. Priority deadline for scholarship consideration is February 1. (If you completed a paper application for admission, complete a separate scholarship application online at https://go.pittstate. edu/scholarship.app.init) Take the ACT and have your scores sent to PSU (our ACT school code is 1449). Have your college or university transcripts (if any) sent to Pitt State. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning October 1, 2016. Apply online at fafsa.ed.gov. (PSU Federal School Code: 001926) Complete the University Housing contract. In October, housing contracts are available online at pittstate.edu/house. Register for PITT C.A.R.E.S. Registration will be available beginning November 1, 2016 to freshmen that have been admitted to PSU. Transfer students will receive the information in March for the fall semester and October for the spring semester. Have an official final high school transcript with graduation date sent to PSU.
