Working at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles and currently
teaching at UCLA, Rabbi Wolpe is the bestselling author
of seven books, including the just released, David: The
Divided Heart. He has been a commentator on the
TODAY Show, CNN, and CBS’ This Morning, and has
been featured in series on PBS and A&E. He is also a
regular contributor to TIME Magazine, The Los Angeles
Times, New York Jewish Week, and The Jerusalem Post,
among others. Previously, he has taught at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America in New York, The
American Jewish University in Los Angeles, and Hunter
College.

I wish I could say I intended my summer sabbatical to evolve in the way
that it did. In truth, however, it was a fortunate accident that the summer
fostered both intentional and concentrated focus in almost all of the
essential areas of life. Beginning with my participation on the Federation
mission to Israel in mid-June and ending with my return to the office
in early August, summer 2014 was filled with meaningful experiences
that contributed to a rejuvenating and energizing sabbatical experience.
The unplanned – yet fortuitous – reality, I believe, is that the summer
I experienced also serves as a meaningful charge for each of us as we

In the spirit of “what I did during my summer sabbatical” (and since so many have lovingly
inquired)…
- A week in Israel on the Federation mission - The journey was shared with roughly
250 people from our Atlanta Jewish community;

- A trip to Costa Rica – An adventurous and fun week in various parts of the

country thoroughly enjoyed with Jill, Adam and Ben;

- A week in New York – An enriching clergy spirituality retreat for professional and
personal reflection and nourishment of the soul;
- Vacation in Breckenridge, CO – A week shared with my family, Jill’s parents and her brother’s family, time
dedicated to strengthening the bonds of family whom we do not see often enough.
Though unintended, what accidentally unfolded is the unique way in which each journey – all of them fabulous in their
own way -- nurtured a different, yet emotionally critical part of my life and combined to create a holistic, enriching and
meaningful summer.
Wishing you and those whom you love good health, abundant blessings and shalom in 5775.

Rabbi Nemhauser will be serving as our
Interim Cantorial Soloist for the year
during Bar and Bat Mitzvah services,
as well as directing our Sinai Singers
Youth Choir. A substitute for many years
when our previous music professionals
were away, Rabbi Nemhauser is no stranger to the Sinai
community. We are delighted that she has agreed to assist
us this year!
The Archives Committee would like to borrow the
professional Confirmation class photos from 1969-1977.
Photos will be scanned, digitized and will replace the
damaged ones that are now on display in the temple
Education wing of the building. Note: Confirmation
occurred during a student’s 10th grade year.

As I reflect upon this unplanned delight, it occurs to me that my sabbatical also provides an excellent frame with which
to guide our lives and actions in 5775. Regardless of the ability to travel (and understanding that we have varied family
realities), what would it mean for us to be intentional, purposeful and dedicated to focusing time and energy in the year
ahead on - ourselves, our partners, our children, our extended family, and Israel? Surely, each essential realm of our lives
is deserving of renewed attention, love, care, and perhaps, even, repair. One doesn’t have to leave the country, the city, or
even our own home to do this sacred, emotionally enriching work. In my mind, Rosh Hashanah 5775 is the ideal time to
begin. If we approach each of these realms of our lives with integrity and determination, the coming year could very well
be a ‘sabbatical’ for each and every one of us.

One of the great things about Temple
Sinai is that it is open and welcoming
to all. In my capacity as co-chair
of Sinai’s accessibility committee,
Hineini, that means Sinai being
warm and inclusive for all who wish
to participate even if dealing with a
challenge or disability.
to bring meaningful Jewish experiences to the Sinai teen
community while his proud mother serves as Sinai’s
Vice President of Community. Two sisters, Jordy and
Abby Frankel, serve simultaneously as Membership and
Communications Vice Presidents. Siblings who can share
leadership and service together redefine the notion of
“Sisterhood” at Sinai.
Another way Sinai is open to all is the wonderful range
of ages of Sinai members and their ability to participate
at all times of their lives in a variety of meaningful
activities. We have babies, toddlers, teens and every
adult across the life-cycle spectrum learning, singing,
dancing, praying and schmoozing at Sinai. That allows for
an amazing exchange of energy, ideas and expressions of
Judaism.
These are just some examples of how the family spirit
of leadership is alive and well at Sinai. Similarly, there
are so many couples who actively serve our community
in various roles and efforts. These partners exhibit
an impressive and significant level of commitment to
Sinai. There are too many such leaders who are couples
to name, but I’m sure you have met, seen and been
welcomed by many at Sinai’s community events and
volunteer efforts.
So many engaged generations have shared a tradition
of service, commitment and involvement at Sinai. As
a prime example, look no further than the leadership
elected into office to represent the SCRUFY Youth Group
at Temple Sinai. The President of the SCRUFY Youth
Group Board, Adam Segal, serves in Jewish leadership at
Sinai, as does his father, Rabbi Ron Segal. Programming
Vice President, Hannah Feldman, served in her prior
congregation on youth programming and since moving
to Atlanta for her father’s new job as Executive Director
of Temple Sinai, now leads on behalf of Sinai’s teens.
Religious and Cultural Vice President, Aaron Earl, works
What is most remarkable is how un-novel this multigenerational, spousal or family leadership and
volunteerism is at Sinai. Our temple has a long history of
families keeping the torch of leadership burning bright,
within families, and from one generation to the next. This
family-style leadership and care of Sinai is something
I cherish, and want to highlight as we journey on our
High Holy Day experiences together as a community.
My aspiration for this congregation is that serving Sinai
continues to be a family tradition, L’Dor Vador, for all
of us, keeping the torch of Reform Jewish leadership
burning brightly.

an opportunity for open dialogue on the current state of Temple Sinai, as well as our vision and goals as we
look ahead to Sinai’s 50th Anniversary in 2018. This Town Hall forum is an opportunity for congregants to learn
more about Temple Sinai’s operations, fiscal health, programming, Endowment and ongoing committee work
concerning future plans with our Membership Commitment model, our music program, strategic planning, and
possible building enhancements.
We hope that you will take this opportunity to attend, ask questions, and learn more about what’s going on at
Our Home, as well as our goals and aspirations for Our Journey into the future. Please Join the Conversation as
we work to enhance the vibrant, committed, warm, and welcoming community that we have built in our nearly
50-year history.

Our Adult B’nai Mitzvah class provides
a chance for adults who have never
had a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony to
participate in group study that will
culminate in being called to the Torah
and leading Shabbat Services. This
program is designed for those members
of Temple Sinai who want to broaden
their Judaic knowledge and experience.

that the B’nai Mitzvah experience has

There are questions that matter to all of us, regardless of our age, religion,
gender, or ethnicity. There are questions all of us can answer, whatever
our background. What does it mean to feel at home? For whom are we
responsible? What will be your legacy? What does it mean to feel and express
thanks? These are Big Questions.
In this mini-series, Rabbi Perry will address Big Questions that matter to
everyone. Such engaging topics will lead to meaningful discussions that build
a sense of community as well as promote personal growth that benefits
individuals. By interpreting various kinds of “texts,” both Jewish and secular,
we will begin to explore the Big Questions that truly matter in our lives.

Enjoyed the World Cup?
Experience Professional Soccer Live with Sinai Brotherhood
at the Atlanta Silverbacks
Brotherhood invites all Temple Sinai members to cheer on Atlanta’s
only professional soccer team, the Atlanta Silverbacks, as they take
on the Tampa Bay Rowdies. We will have opportunities for kids
to be part of the game, too! Children ages 8-14 can be part of the
Dream Team, which allows them to walk players onto the field and
stand with the players during the National Anthem. Children ages
13-16 can serve as Ballboys and Ballgirls, which means they get to
watch the game from the field and throw new balls to the players as
needed. After the game, everyone is invited to meet the team and
get autographs on the field.
$10 for Brotherhood members and family, $15 for non-brotherhood
members and family. Dream Team and Ballboy and Ballgirl spots
are available on a first come, first serve basis. If your child is selected for one of these positions, you will need to arrive at the field by

Sandy Springs in November 2005 and served one term.
He chaired the City’s charter commission and the Sandy
Springs Development Authority and is a former Georgia

An Afternoon with Etgar Keret

Join us for an afternoon with famous
contemporary Israeli author and poet,
Etgar Keret. He will read from several of
his works and screen two short films based
on his stories. A Q&A will follow. Etgar’s
humor and wit combined with his creative
style will make this a “don’t miss” event.

Gallery (199 Armour Drive, NE) at 2:00 pm to view their
exhibit on Atlanta Celebrates Photography. Lucinda
Bunnen, who has published three books on her work
and is in the High Museum, Museum of Modern Art,
Whitney Museum, and the Smithsonian, will give a

Our New Pre-K and Transitional Kindergarten Literacy Center

Our talented Preschool Staff and our wonderful
Librarian, Adelle Salmenson, have teamed up to
enhance our Preschool program in the 2014-2015
school year by using our Children’s Library to house
reading programs for the Pre-K
and Transitional
Kindergarten classes. Through
teamwork, thoughtful planning, and with funding from
Sinai’s Special Funds, we’ve
added a Smart Board, reading
and listening tables, and more
student seating areas to the
Children’s Library. The space is
now equipped to function as a
Literacy Center that is used on a
daily basis by the students in our growing and flourishing Pre-K and Transitional Kindergarten programs.
On August 21, we held a special Ribbon Cutting ceremony to celebrate the new space and kick off the
2014-2015 Preschool year that began on Monday,
August 25. Our Sinai family members, Diane and Fred
Shaftman did the official Ribbon Cutting. Diane and
Fred named the Children’s Library with a generous
gift to Temple Sinai’s mortgage in 2012. As Diane and
Fred are also grandparents of Temple Sinai Preschool
alumni (Jacob and Benjamin
Jones, children of Emily and
Bill), we were honored to have
them join us. Fred gave a toast
stating, “When presented with
the opportunity to help Temple
Sinai with the mortgage, I knew
the space for us to name was the
Children’s Library because this is
where the future of our People is
cultivated.”
We are most grateful to Fred and Diane for their
generous support of our community. We are proud to
have the Shaftman family’s name grace our Children’s
Library which serves as a home for our youngest Sinai
family members on their journey to becoming lifelong
learners.

In preparation for his Bar Mitzvah, Evan Blum carried on his family’s tradition of completing 18 mitzvot before his Bar Mitzvah. Some of his projects
included volunteering at The Nicholas House; playing with
homeless children at Our House; and participating in the Daffodil Project,
where he planted daffodils in memory of children who died in the
Holocaust.
Max Graivier, son of Kathy and Miles Graivier.
Max volunteered at the Atlanta Food Bank’s Product Rescue Center, where
all donated food items are inspected, sorted, and packaged for people in
need. Through his experience, Max learned the importance of teamwork
and developed a passion for feeding the hungry. He is also raising funds for
Heifer International.
Gavin Lyons, son of Tobi and Gil Lyons.
Gavin was an active participant in Social Action Sunday. He made sandwiches and scarves for the homeless, prepared Kesher Cares meals, and put
together toiletry packs for those in need. He is now the first and only teen
to serve on the Social Action Sunday committee at Temple Sinai.
Austin Margol, son of Elise and Maury Margol.
An avid sports enthusiast, Austin collected new and gently used sports
equipment for ChrisKids, an Atlanta-based organization that helps
children living in unhealthy foster care situations. Austin received
donated items from friends, family, Sandy Springs Youth Sports, and sporting goods manufacturers.
Josh Peljovich, son of Lori and Allan Peljovich.
Josh’s project was inspired by his visit to Cuba with his grandparents in
2012. There, he noticed there was a severe shortage of pens and pencils.
So, he suggested friends and family “add a pack” to their back-to-school
shopping and collected pens and pencils to send to El Patronato
Synagogue in Havana, Cuba, where his grandparents worshipped.
Adam and Eric Rubinger, sons of Hedy and David Rubinger.
Adam and Eric completed three different volunteer projects. They
helped renovate Toomer Elementary School in the East Lake and
Kirkwood neighborhoods; organized a team of walkers for the 5K Walk
to End Alzheimers; and collected sports equipment for Amy’s Holiday
Party, which provides gifts to homeless children during the holidays.

Upon the completion fiscal year 2013-2014 on June 30, 2014, Temple Sinai’s Endowment stood at $4,443,749. Our
closing balance to end 2012-2013 on June 30, 2013 was $3,777,774. That’s a gain of over $650,000! Thanks to
contributions from our Sinai family members and prudent investing by our Endowment Investment Subcommittee
and Fifth Third Bank, our Endowment Fund experienced growth of over 18% last fiscal year.

Book Talks With Rabbi Kranz to Continue This Year
As part the Kranz Learning Center’s ongoing program,
Rabbi Kranz will offer seven Thursday afternoon
presentations on books, especially related to the
outstanding collection in our Temple Sinai library.
These sessions, now in their second year, are designed
to inform on the latest news in the Jewish book world
and to encourage Sinai members to become more

Show and Sale! Dozens of well-known artists, who are also
Temple Sinai members, will display their work in the show.
The event is open to the entire community, free of charge.
This is a great opportunity to see Temple Sinai’s artists and
their works, which will be available for purchase. Many
of the participants in the show are professional artists
representing a wide variety of media. And especially for
this show, there will be a section dedicated to children
artists who want to showcase and sell their work.

Dr. Alan Lease (1938 - 2003) recorded much of the
history of Temple Sinai from the 1960s through the
early 2000s. He took and developed both Consecration
and Confirmation pictures until 1990 and was rarely
seen without a
camera.

Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build
Join Temple Sinai on our final build day of our ninth Habitat for
Humanity project as we work with Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and
others affiliated with the Atlanta Interfaith Build to build a house for
a family in need. This is a wonderful day for social action, helping a
family bring itself into a new home and start a new life. It is a most

Promise, this month’s Social Action Sunday is themed
“Helping the Homeless.” We’ll be making
sandwiches and scarves to benefit Atlanta’s
homeless and hungry men, women and children. This
is a wonderful intergenerational program where
people of all ages will be able to share a meaningful,
fun experience.
Throughout September, Temple Sinai will collect
Non-perishable food for the Community Assistance
Center. Money placed in the Temple Sinai tzedakah
boxes will support the Community Assistance Center.
From 12:15 - 12:30 pm, a pizza lunch will be served.
The social action projects will begin at 12:30 pm.
Please RSVP on our website so that we may provide
enough food and materials for all attendees.
The National Council of Jewish Women, Atlanta Jewish
Coalition for Literacy is seeking several volunteer tutors
to help children on a one-on-one basis to develop their
reading potential. Volunteers can be men or women,
age 18+, as long as they are able to tutor during school
hours.
For just an hour a week and not too far from your
home, you can positively and permanently change the
life of a child. Some of the reading tutors help as many
as three students but most of the volunteers work with
one child for 30-45 minutes per week per child at a
school near the volunteer’s home.

Abused

In memory of women and children who lost their lives
to domestic violence and honoring the courage of our
survivors.” This beautiful tree flourishes with vibrant
flowers every summer, an indicator of the strength
and vitality of survivors and a testament to individuals
working toward Peace in the Home.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. How
can you help create a community free from abuse?
Abuse continues because we remain silent and victims
hide in fear, from shame, a feeling of being alone and
thinking nobody will believe them. We deny the reality
that abuse — physical, sexual and emotional control
— occurs in Jewish homes at the same rate as the
community at large. The impact of living with abuse
lasts a lifetime.
Everyone can make a difference. If you suspect someone
may be abused, listen, believe her/him, inquire about
safety and resist blaming. Ask how you can help. Remain
calm, and provide resources. Your actions impact
our entire community. Challenge violence, initiate
discussions and begin educational programming within
your congregation. Inquire about programs for youth
on healthy relationships and preventing dating violence.
Shalom Bayit, a program of Counseling Services - Tools
for Life, strives to mobilize the Jewish community to
create the change needed to end domestic violence,
providing counseling and programs for adults and abuse
prevention for youth.

Repairing Broken Glass:
Confronting the Holocaust and Genocide
Sunday, November 9
Join AJC/ACCESS for their current Genocide Awareness
Initiative. Commemorate Kirstallnacht, “The Night of
Broken Glass,” the Holocaust and all other genocides with
art, reflection, and contemplation. The Genocide
Awareness Initiative will be hosting a photography exhibit
that documents stories from the Holocaust as well as the
genocides in Rwanda, South Sudan, and other countries.

Family Promise Comfort Food Cookoff

The Comfort Food Cookoff is a competition between
participating congregations in the Family Promise program. The
winner is the congregation that receives the most votes. Each
ticket comes with one vote and you may purchase additional
votes for $1/vote. All proceeds benefit Family Promise of North
Fulton/Dekalb!

Arlington Memorial Park recently
opened 300 new grave sites for
the exclusive use of Temple Sinai
members in the Shalom Section
adjacent to our original area.
The costs of these new grave
sites are $4995. There are still
about 30+ grave sites available
in the Menorah Section at a
cost of $3995. Most of these
grave sites are one, two or four
plots together. Be aware that
only ground monuments can
be installed in the Temple Sinai
Sections at Arlington.
As a third alternative, grave
sites will soon be available at
the new Jewish cemetery at
North Atlanta Memorial Park on
February 1, 2015. The plan is to
designate areas for the Reform,
Conservative and Orthodox as
well as synagogue designated
areas. Prices have not been
established. Upright monuments
will be allowed.

Our Congregants in Action
Sunday, September 7 was a busy day at Temple Sinai! We kicked off the morning with
our Annual Congregational Pancake Breakfast. Sinai members were invited to nosh on
pancakes, eggs, coffee, and all the fixings prepared by our Rabbis and staff. After eating, everyone was invited to visit the Engagement and Volunteer Fair, where leaders
of various synagogue committees helped members find new activities to get involved
with. It was also the first day of Religious School, and both teachers and students
were eager to start the new school year! Parents were invited to attend an interactive
meeting with Marisa Kaiser, Director of Education, while their children were in class.
