CAMPUS CONNECT—JULY 2016
CANCER, COFFEE, COMMUNITY & CHRIST
By Chaplain Adam Leeper
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you,
I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.—Isaiah 41:10
It was a hot, sticky August day in Greencastle as Elmer and I were preparing to leave his favorite
coffee shop. Thursday trips to this coffee shop had become a weekly ritual for us. We usually
stayed about an hour drinking coffee, eating donuts, and chatting with the “regulars” we had
come to know. On this day the hour stretched to two hours. Perhaps Elmer sensed that it was the
last time he would make this trip and he wanted to spend as much time as he could with the
people who had become such an important part of his life.
I knew that it was a struggle for him to stay the second the hour. His physical pain was
increasing but it was offset by his desire to extend our weekly ritual just a little longer. After a few
goodbyes and several hugs from his friends, Elmer gave me a nod and I grasped the handles of his
wheelchair and we began the trek to my car. As we pulled away from the curb he confirmed that
his oxygen was beginning to run low and that the effectiveness of his morning dose of morphine
had worn off.
Elmer and I had become fast friends two years earlier when he first came under hospice care. I
was the chaplain and it didn’t take long for us to learn we really enjoyed spending time together.
Elmer had always been an active person and now his body was weakening and travelling was
more difficult. His world was becoming smaller and so I invited him to join me at the coffee shop
and our ritual began. But now it had come to an end and Elmer died a few weeks after that hot
August day.
One of the last things Elmer requested was that I share this part of his story. It was his desire that
people would know how good the Lord had been to him. He was orphaned at a very young age
and sent to Scotland School for Veterans Children. As an adult he was married but soon divorced.
Though he had many friends he never really had family. But then something good happened.
Elmer learned he had cancer.
The doctors told Elmer he had, at most, one year to live. He spent all of his retirement money on
experimental treatment in a foreign country believing that if it didn’t work he would die. If it did
cure him he planned on returning to work. The treatment didn’t work and he didn’t die. He stayed
ill with cancer and no money. In the midst of that horrible situation he received a phone call from
his childhood friend he met at Scotland School for Veterans Children. Elmer was invited to live with
his friend, his wife, and his daughter. Elmer accepted and lived with them for the next six years.
One day as death neared Elmer looked at me and said, “I’m glad I got sick. It wasn’t until the
cancer that I really, really, knew what it was like to have a family. I had a real Christmas, real
birthdays, and the same people in the same house for years!” He also shared how he had come to
appreciate God’s presence in his life. One of the last things he said to me was, “God made the
cancer years the very best years of my life.” Sometimes the worst of times really are the best of
times.
MOVIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES
Northgate Movie Night
There will not be a Northgate Movie Night in July and August.
MOVIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES:
Renaissance Movie Night @ Chambers Pointe
Join us for Renaissance Movie Night on Friday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the
Renaissance Club Room at Chambers Pointe. Our feature presentation
will be High Society starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly & Frank Sinatra. With
socialite Tracy Lord about to remarry, her ex-husband -- with the help of a
sympathetic reporter -- has 48 hours to convince her that she really still loves him. A romantic musical
comedy with songs by Cole Porter! (Approximate running time is 1 hr. 51 min., Color, Not Rated, 1956) [For
more information, contact Sherry Kennedy @ 261-4000.]
Movie Night in the Village Square Lobby @ Brookview
At resident request we will begin to show occasional movies in the Village Square Lobby. On Wednesday,
August 10 at 5:45 p.m. see The Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart & June Allyson. Glenn Miller is
playing his terrific big band hits again in this stunning musical biography. This movie is a vibrant tribute to one
of America’s legendary bandleaders, charting Miller’s rise from obscurity and poverty to fame and wealth in
the early 1940’s. But at the onset of World War II, Miller gives up his fame and success to help entertain the
troops stationed in Europe. On December 15, 1944, at the age of 40, his plane tragically went missing over
the English Channel and was never found. (Approximate running time is 115 min., Color, Rated G, 1954) [For
more information, contact Village Square Life Enrichment @ 261-2490.]
Movies in the Village Square Hobby Center @ Brookview
On Monday, August 22 at 9:00 a.m. – The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. We complete our
celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Parks with the last episode from Ken Burn’s
documentary. Great Nature explores president Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s efforts to expand the park
service to include battlefields and other historic and iconic sites as well as creating the Civilian Conservation
Corps. The Everglades & Teton Mountains will be explored along with other National Parks. (Approximate
run time: 120 min., 2009, not rated.) [For more information, contact Village Square Life Enrichment @ 2612490.]
On Tuesday, August 30 at 1:15 p.m. we will show The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. After making her way to
China to become a missionary, an English parlor maid, played by Ingrid Bergman, wins the heart and
respect of the locals, but her greatest accomplishment is leading 100 homeless children to safety across
enemy-held terrain during Japan’s invasion of China. Adapted from the novel “The Small Woman” about
the true-life story of Gladys Aylward, “this powerfully poignant film is inspiring entertainment from beginning
to end”. (Approximate run time is 158 min, 1958, Color, Rated PG) [For more information, contact Village
Square Life Enrichment @ 261-2490.]
Please note: While everyone is welcome to the Hobby Center, due to a somewhat limited space, we

DID YOU KNOW ~ On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established the National
Park Service. Up to that point, there were 35 national parks, monuments, and reserves. The
new National Park Service would "promote and regulate" national parks, monuments,
reserves and much more, leaving them "unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

Pet of the Month!
August’s Pet of the Month is “Sadie”, a Bichon Frise owned by Chambers Pointe cottage
resident Dorothy Thomas. Sadie is 11 years old. Dorothy regularly took Sadie for walks for her
previous owner, so when her owner passed away, the family felt it would be best for Sadie
to live with Dorothy since she already knew her. Sadie is very playful, loves belly rubs, and
likes to eat! Because she has a special diet, Dorothy carries her special treats with her in
case others want to give them to her. Sadie is definitely a people dog! She also looks
forward to going out for walks, and she actually enjoys spending time in her cage where
she also sleeps. Be sure to tune in to the in-house TV Ch. 956 during the month of August to
see a picture of Sadie! If you have a pet that you would like to have featured some time in
2016, please contact the Chambers Pointe Life Enrichment office at 261-4000, or in-house
ext. 2015. We’d love to hear from you!

Part 2: 'at sea': Tuesday, August 16; 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Meet at the gazebo behind the Manor at
Reflection Lake - Chambers Pointe Community
The Objective of the course is to enable an aspiring skipper to safely operate and control
a remote controlled model sailboat. The course consists of two sessions: the first in the classroom
and the second afloat.
• The classroom/ashore lesson: This is a beginner's course. It will include basic nomenclature of
the boat and sails, introduction to the operation of the controls -- actual hands on. Points of sail,
tacking, gybing will all be explained thoroughly and demonstrated using the model sailboat.
Student Skippers will practice operating the sails and rudder in the classroom so as to learn
what the radio controls actually do to the boat's rudder and sails.
The lesson on the lake includes: 1 on 1 or small groups led by experienced coaches. Each
student skipper will have hands-on transmitter time, sailing a boat in the open waters of
Reflection Lake. Students will remain on the walkway above the lake: boats will be launched
and recovered by the instructor. Student skippers will have the opportunity to sail the boat
around buoys/markers. Students will learn how to tack the boat, gybe the boat and sail her on
various points of sail.

Green Team News
CRT TELEVISIONS: As most residents know, the Green Team does not recycle
CRT televisions (the fat ones). At the present time the group we work with
cannot accept them, and it looks like they won’t in the near future. The only
proper method of disposal is to take them to Best Buy in Hagerstown. They
properly recycle them, but they do charge a fee of $25. However, some
residents do not have transportation to Hagerstown, so the Green Team is
starting a program to collect CRT TVs from resident only who cannot or do not
want to drive to Hagerstown. To dispose of a set, call Sandy Myers in
Maintenance (261-2500) to have your set collected. There will be a fee of $30
for this service, preferably in cash. Sandy will inform the Green Team when they
have a set for recycle and one of the resident Green Team members will take
the set to Best Buy and pay the $25 fee with the money provided. The other $5
will go for gas for the Green Team member.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD: The award will be making a tour of
the different areas in the Menno Haven community. Keep an eye out for it in a
display case near you!
HEARING AID BATTERIES: The Green Team does not collect hearing aid
batteries, but most audiology facilities do. Check with your audiologist or the
store where you purchase them to see if they collect these batteries.

Monarch Butterfly Habitat
I’m sure that many people have have seen
the Monarch Butterfly Habitat sign that is now in
the bank garden by the Railroad Tracks on South
Penn Hall Drive.
Many thanks are due to Carl Vallow who
designed the sign and Larry Lowry for his
woodworking talent, also the grounds crew who
carefully placed it in the garden.
The butterfly weed (a type of
milkweed) is growing and ready
for the Monarch Butterflies to
arrive later this summer.

American Flag
Thank you to the person or persons
responsible for erecting the American
Flag in front of Northgate. It was a
beautiful addition to the area and a
constant reminder of the liberties we all
enjoy.
Thank You!
We would like to thank Katie Ackerman for acquiring some much needed equipment and
beautification supplies for the Shade Garden. We would also like to thank Tom and Ruth Zebarth for
their monetary contribution to Shade Garden supplies.
The ceremony for the 20th anniversary of the Shade Garden was lovely and significant and Rachel
and I thank all who planned and participated in that event. And thank you for all the residents who
came out on that beautiful afternoon!!!
Recently some residents contributed plants to the Shade Garden....some were even planted for us!
Thank you to Barb Lawver and Gene and Martine Shelly for their generosity.
We encourage everyone to visit the Shade Garden...it is beautiful this time of year! Come and spend
some time in the tranquil, restorative beauty of God's creation.

Summer Safety Reminder
With summer here residents and staff alike are out walking more. Just a friendly reminder
when out walking, to please use the sidewalks rather than alongside of the cars parked in
our parking lots. Walking right behind parked cars causes the drivers not to be able to see
you (or not in time) should they be attempting to pull out. Drivers also please be cautious
to look around you before pulling out; sometimes we all seem to get in a hurry and forget
to do that one last check before pulling out!
Thanks – your Safety Committee Team

CONTINUING OUR
LEGACY OF CARE
Menno Haven’s “things
to be proud of” are too
many to list in this article,
but there is one thing
that tops the list and is
s e c ond
to
none .
Starting with the first
resident who came to live at Menno Haven on Sept. 17,
1964, each resident thereafter has known that if they
found themselves in need of financial assistance for their
care Menno Haven would step up and provide for them.
Even though over 50 years has passed since that first
resident moved here, Menno Haven is no less committed
to that promise of continued quality care for each and
every resident, no matter their ability to pay. Our
Benevolent Care Fund in the past year assisted over 150
residents with over one million in financial assistance. In
the next few weeks you will be receiving an appeal letter
from Development Services asking you to consider a
financial gift to the Benevolent Fund. We hope that you
will participate in this appeal and that through your
generosity build on this program that makes Menno
Haven such a special place to live.
Located just 5 minutes away on
Scotland Road, the Chambersburg
Country Club provides amenities such
as Dining, Golf, Tennis, Picketball,
Outdoor pools and Social Events—
amenities and services that only
members of the Country Club can
gain access to. As of Monday, June
20th all of our independent Living
residents now have the same access
to these amenities as the club’s Social
Members! Golf, tennis and access to
the County Club amenities are now
available to you simply by virtue of
being a resident at Menno Haven!
One of the advantages of this new
relationship is that Menno Haven can
accommodate many more residents
at events where interest and demand
have previously outpaced our current
space limitations. We hope to see you
there!

Not an Average First Job
By Ashley Benedict, Clinical Dietitian
At the age of 15, Menno Haven seemed like a great place for a first job. However, not
particularly loving the geriatric population and with little interest in working, I wasn’t
certain this “first job” thing was going to last. Little did I know that my “first job” would
inspire my entire career. Eleven years ago, I started working as part of the wait staff in
Village Square’s kitchen. Once the Northgate building was constructed, I transitioned
down to Chestnut Landing to help open the restaurant and stayed there until
graduating college in 2012. It was during these years that residents became family,
food became inspiration, and together, nutrition and healthcare became my passion.
My experience at Menno Haven, specifically the interactions with residents and
encouragement from my manager, led me to complete a Bachelor’s in Nutritional
Science with a minor in Gerontology from The Pennsylvania State University. After
graduation, I had to complete a year of clinical experience before I was allowed to sit
(and pass) my national boards to become a Registered Dietitian. A year into my career
as a Registered Dietitian, I got a phone call I will never forget- a call asking me to come
back to Menno Haven as the Registered Dietitian. I literally jumped for joy. Coming
back to the place where it all began has been a true blessing. I have thoroughly
enjoyed every connection I have made with the residents; many residents that I now
consider family. It is the residents that have truly been so encouraging and inspirational
throughout these eleven years. It is with mixed emotions that I will be moving on from
Menno Haven as of August. I am very excited to start a new life in Annapolis, Maryland,
with my soon-to-be husband. I would like to thank all of you for your support,
encouragement, and the connections that I have made while being here.

To see if learning a new language could improve a person’s cognitive function.
Scientists have shown that language learning:

• Lowers risks of Dementia and Alzheimer’s
• Increases Brain Size and Connectivity
“Destinos” is a widely respected program used by millions of people for
more than 20 years, billed as “An Introduction to the Spanish
Language.” The proposed course here at Menno Haven will utilize the
material from Destinos in a self-paced manner with weekly reviews for
the group conducted by Warren Leach and to be supplemented with
one-on-one assistance, as needed. Skip has considerable experience
with language learning and international travel that will help facilitate
the efforts of those interested in trying to increase their foreign language skills. The only
requirements are to have access to the internet along with an Ipad or computer, and the
desire to try something new.
Anyone interested in learning more about the program can call
Warren at 264-2908.

Importance of Hydration
By Kiana Taylor, Penn State Nutrition Student
In any stage of life, hydration is key. But
dehydration in the elderly is a major
concern. Now that it is summertime and
the weather is getting hotter, it is even
more important to ensure adequate
hydration. Since hydration is so
important, it is also important to know
the risk factors, consequences, and tips
to stay well hydrated this summer.
Risk Factors
There are many risk factors that
contribute to dehydration in the elderly.
As you age, you have a decreased
sense of thirst, which can put you at risk
for dehydration. You also tend to eat less
as you age, and therefore may forget to eat or drink.
In addition, there are physiological changes occurring as you age, such as
changes with fluid metabolism and reduced kidney function as you age,
swallowing difficulties and other GI disorders that may affect fluid intake (Ferry).
Different diseases states (i.e. uncontrolled diabetes, etc.) or acute illnesses,
diarrhea, and vomiting are major causes for dehydration. Also, mental frailty (i.e.
dementia, Alzheimer’s) and physical ability to feed self can contribute to
hydration status (Dehydration in the Elderly).
Consequences dehydration
If hydration status is not taken seriously, it can result in some consequences
including increased risk or poor health outcomes, decrease in mental
performance (i.e. memory, attention, concentration, reaction time), increase
feeling of being tired, risk of urinary tract infections, and constipation
(Dehydration in the Elderly)
Tips for Hydration
In order to stay well hydrated this summer, here are some tips for ensuring
adequate fluids are being consumed:
• Try to drink throughout the day and drink before you become thirsty. Thirst is a
sign that you are already dehydrated.
• Keep a fresh water pitcher and cup at the bedside
• Have healthy drinks readily available (Schols, et al)
• Encourage to drink often instead of in large amounts (Ferry)
• Incorporate foods with a high water content into meals and snacks, such as
popsicles, gelatin, watermelon, etc.
• Make drinks more appealing by using lemonade pitchers and glasses, cocktail
decorations, infused water with fresh fruits, or a fruit garnish.
• Offer a variety of other drink options such as Crystal Light or hot drink options
