Course
Description
In
this
Tuscan
Intensive
we
will
go
in
search
of
the
real
Italy,
and
we
will
immerse
ourselves
in
the
culture
today—from
social
customs
like
the
passeggiata—the
nightly
stroll
that
Italians
take—to
finding
the
best
gelato,
to
using
a
system
of
public
transportation
that
is
truly
convenient.
You'll
also
see
how
Italians
live
with
the
past—
from
the
glories
of
Roman
architecture
to
the
memorials
to
fallen
soldiers
in
World
Wars.
This
Intensive
will
be
a
study
in
contrast
between
the
past
and
the
present,
including
how
the
past
is
SO
present
everywhere
you
look—in
what
you
eat,
the
architecture
and
the
lifestyle.
It
begins
with
an
overnight
in
Florence,
birthplace
of
the
Italian
Renaissance,
then
we
move
on
to
Sansepolcro
in
time
for
the
opening
procession
and
annual
Renaissance
Street
Fair
for
le
Balestra.
The
Balestra
is
a
cross‐bow
competition
between
neighboring
Gubbio
and
Sansepolcro
that
has
an
ancient
history—but
has
been
revived
in
fairly
recent
times
with
splendid
pageantry.
The
streets
are
lit
with
candles,
and
you
will
feel
like
you
have
stepped
back
in
time
to
the
Renaissance.
We
will
make
trips
to
several
nearby
cities/towns
including
Siena,
Anghiari,
Arezzo
and
Perugia,
each
time
with
a
particular
underlying
focus
or
theme.
For
example,
Siena's
focus
will
be
on
rivalries.
Among
other
themes
are
women's
roles
(then
and
now),
the
tradition
of
arts
and
crafts
and
it's
economic
impact,
the
creation
of
wealth
and
its
link
to
arts
and
culture
(our
Florence
theme),
politics
and
lifestyle
(encompassing
food,
wine,
cafe
society,
pace
of
day,
holidays)—a
broad
category
that
you
will
live
daily.
We
will
explore
the
best
places
to
shop,
the
museums
or
historical
sites
that
you
should
not
miss
but
might
not
know
about
otherwise,
and
discover
wonderful
destinations
that
most
tourists
overlook.
You
will
have
a
chance
to
see
famous
artworks
and
places
that
you
have
dreamed
about,
but
beyond
that,
you'll
experience
the
pace
and
essence
of
Italian
life
as
we
have
discussions
over
cappuccinos
or
a
fine
Italian
vintage.
You
will
be
encouraged
to
keep
a
journal
in
the
format
you
prefer—written
Journal,
photo
journal,
or
blog.

Course
Description
The
chef
at
the
Palazzo
Alberti
will
offer
her
very
popular
Tuscan
cooking
class
again
this
fall,
which
emphasizes
favorite
dishes
from
this
region.
Margherita
will
include
new
recipes,
which
include
ingredients
only
available
in
the
fall,
such
as
autumn
truffles,
grapes,
chestnuts
and
seasonal
herbs.
In
addition
to
delicious
antipasta,
pasta
and
first
plate
dishes,
you
will
learn
to
prepare
these
fabulous
dolci—mousse
e
semifreddi,
bavarase
and
crème
bruleé.
You
will
cook
in
the
mornings
with
Margherita,
eat
what
you
have
prepared
for
pranzo
(lunch),
and
travel
to
neighboring
sites
in
the
afternoons
to
explore
farms
and
farmers’
markets,
to
enjoy
wine
tastings
in
lovely
vineyards,
and
to
learn
about
vendors
who
support
Italy’s
slow
food
movement.
You
will
visit
Aboca
Erbe,
which
is
an
herb
farm
where
you
will
pick
your
own
herbs
and
learn
to
cook
using
these
herbs.
You
will
also
search
for
truffles
in
the
nearby
forest
and
chestnuts
in
Caprese
Michelangelo.
You
will
meet
other
chefs
from
the
area
and
explore
independently
the
varied
and
excellent
restaurants
in
Sansepolcro.

Tuscan Intensives
are
mini‐courses
enriched
by
daily
excursions
as
well
as
experiences
in
Sansepolcro
and
in
venues
further
afield
in
Tuscany
and
Umbria.
These
programs
have

designed
especially
for
alumnae
to
give
you
the
opportunity
to
live
and
learn
in
Sansepolcro,
in
Meredith
College’s
Italian
campus.
Your
friends
and
family
members
old
enough
to
take
the
class
are
also
welcome.
Participants
will
receive
a
comprehensive
pre‐departure
packet
that
will
provide
helpful
information
on
numerous
issues,
including
transportation,
currency,
packing,
and
a
detailed
itinerary.
You
will
have
two
days
for
independent
travel
during
each
class.
Unique
shopping
and
dining
opportunities
abound
in
the
region
as
well
as
the
historical,
artistic
and
cultural
treasures.
