Director’s Note:
Our Fun Photo
It was difficult for me to realize I needed to work on this
March/April newsletter already! Time flies, but I am ready
for some warmer weather to stick around for a while!
We continue to offer you our regularly scheduled program
and class options, including two new Health Workshops,
The Power of Thought on Your Health and Nerve Pain and
Neuropathy, and another 8-week writing class starting in
April for continuing students and newly registered
students.
Several members have requested that we initiate the start
of a Sewing Circle for the purpose of socializing, sharing
projects and learning new techniques. So that we can
gauge potential participation in a Sewing Circle, please
notify Susan of your interest.
Join other members, eat freshly popped popcorn and
enjoy your choice of drink during our upcoming movie
presentations; “Infinitely Polar Bear,” “He Named Me
Malala,” “McFarland, U.S.A.,” and “Fed Up.” You will
surely enjoy!
Finally and most importantly, the Annual Volunteer
Luncheon will be on Monday, April 11th from 12:00 –2:00
p.m. The luncheon is just a small token of our appreciation
for all of our volunteers who graciously give so much of
their time and talent to the Center and its members.
Fired Arts Studio reorganized to include a new
glass station!

Glass Wind Chimes! (two-part class)
Adult Coloring
Dates: Tuesdays
March 8th & 22nd
Time: 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Make beautiful wind chimes out of
glass. You will choose the glass
and design the chimes yourself
during the first session of this
class. Your design will then be
fired and two weeks later, during
the second session, we will all
string the chimes into beautiful-sounding, eye catching
pieces of art.
You may bring your own decorations to string with the
glass, and it is preferred that you bring your own chime
top. Chime tops can be made of driftwood or other
material as long as we will be able to connect the chime
strings. If you have questions, please talk to Donna Ross
or Donna Russell.
Cost: $20 – 5 glass chimes
$25 – 7 glass chimes
String, wire and a limited amount
of beads and other glass
decorations/supplies included.
Extra beads and dichroic glass
available for purchase.
May bring your own decorations.
Top picture, wind chime made by Joan Bright, bottom picture,
made by Anita Oakey.
Coloring is an activity that we
tend to associate with children.
As we grow older, we put aside
our crayons and colored pencils
in favor of more respectable writing utensils like pens and
highlighters. However, it turns out coloring can be
beneficial for adults -- namely for its de-stressing
power.
The practice generates wellness, quietness and also
stimulates brain areas related to motor skills, the senses
and creativity. In fact, publishers have lately been
launching coloring books specifically for adults. The trend
is alive and well in countries in Europe and North
America. Coloring has a de-stressing effect because
when we focus on a particular activity, we tend to not
focus on our worries. It also "brings out our imagination
and takes us back to our childhood, a period in which we
most certainly had a lot less stress."
By reducing the size of your colorings, you can use
them to make unique greeting cards. You can also
frame them in their original size to give your home or
office a color boost!

Hand and Foot is a Canasta variant involving four to six
decks rather than two and is played by teams of two
players (usually two teams, but it also works with three or
four teams). The number of decks used is typically one
more than the number of players, though this can vary.
Due to the larger pool of available cards, it is much easier
to form canastas in Hand and Foot than in standard
Canasta, which changes the strategy considerably.
Some players feel this version is more enjoyable for
beginners.

Fired Arts Studio
Fired Arts Studio
Fired Arts Program
Open Studio
Because our studio now offers much more than ceramics,
we have renamed it “Fired Arts.” Fired Arts will continue
to offer all of our past options, ceramics and pottery
(earthenware clay, bisque, stoneware, porcelain, glass,
paints, glazes and decals), however, we have expanded
our glass options to include glass fusing.
Hand Building with Clay
Hand building is working with clay by hand using only
simple tools, not the pottery wheel. Before potters had
the wheel, they were creating beautiful pots and clay
forms using their hands, fingers and basic tools. Most
common forms of hand building is pinch, coiling and slab
techniques. Most do not realize the infinite world of hand
building and the artistic possibilities it opens. Watch the
new DVD on hand building with slab techniques! See
Donna or Linda to schedule a viewing.
