Message from the interim superinendent
Since this is the last edition of our district Newscaster
for the 2012-2013 school year (sometimes known as
the “Graduation” issue), I thought I would offer some
reflections to our graduates, continuing students, and
community members.
David Gill,
Interim superintendent
As I shared during my recent graduation speech,
graduating from high school is a milestone event in a
person’s life. I shared the hope that Chenango Valley –
both our school and community – have helped provide
our graduates with the necessary tools to reach their
full potential in life. I hope we have nourished and
stimulated their intellect and provided them with the
self-confidence they will need to be successful.

Special Achievement
Eric Hammond receives ‘Outstanding Student’ award
Eric Hammond recently received the Outstanding Student
Award from the Broome-Tioga BOCES School-to-Careers program.
One student from each of the school districts in the BroomeTioga BOCES region received the award in recognition of their
achievements in career-related programs, good citizenship,
community service and career planning.
Eric was a student in the BOCES New Visions Health Academy,
a job-shadowing program that enables students to complete
their academic requirements while getting real-world exposure
to their chosen career path. The New Visions Health Academy
program, done in conjunction with Lourdes Hospital, places students in a hospital setting and rotates them into various departments where they learn and assist healthcare professionals.
The New Visions program was an extremely rewarding experience for Eric, who will be attending Wilkes University this fall
and plans to pursue a career as a physician.
Eric Hammond receives his Outstanding Student award from Sandra Watkins,
BOCES School-to-Careers supervisor.
Anthony Spaziano named
‘Exceptional Student’
Students reach high point levels
in Accelerated Reading
Anthony Spaziano was
recently honored with the
Exceptional Student Award
from the Broome-Tioga
BOCES Evertech High School
program.
Three students in Mrs. Liburdi’s third-grade class this past year proved
themselves to be eager bookworms by reaching top point levels in the
Accelerated Reading program.
As a senior, Anthony took a
student leadership role by
becoming the Evertech treasurer. He graduated from
the program in June with a
Regents diploma, and will be
attending Broome Community College this fall to major in health services.
Emily Goodstal has reached 300 points. Sarah Gorman and Maxwell
Bigelow have each reached 250 points.
The point levels indicate the amount of comprehended reading the student has accomplished.
Great job, Emily, Max and Sarah. We’re sure you’ll keep reading over the
summer!
He plans to continue his education after BCC and
hopes to become a school counselor.
Congratulations, Anthony, on your Exceptional Student award.

Important transportation notice
Message
continued from p.1
Someone recently provided me with a great book entitled “START”, by Jon Acuff. The premise of the book
is to “do work that matters”. Acuff shares three profound statements: no one aims for average; no one
sets out for status quo; and no one longs for ordinary.
Acuff continues by describing five stages of one’s
success: Learning, Editing, Mastering, Harvesting, and
Guiding. I share this to once again remember that
learning and education never stops. Life offers each
of us new opportunities, new experiences, new challenges, and new celebrations.
My hope for our students and community is to continually reach for new heights, while remembering
to support and embrace the people we care for and
who care for us. Let’s “START” the chain reaction for
not accepting mediocrity and intolerances for our
differences.
Enjoy the summer months with your family and
friends and “Thank You” for your continued support
of our community.
Go Warriors!
Sincerely,
David Gill
What bus does my son or daughter
ride on next school year? What time
will they get picked up and dropped
off?
The Chenango Valley transportation department works very hard to
accommodate the changing transportation needs of our students. In
order to accommodate all those needs, we need accurate information on
the students’ home address, parent/guardian, care provider and afterschool activities.
We accept daily changes to the bus schedule until 1p.m. on full days and
10 a.m. on half days, at 762-6850. For permanent changes, please send
in a new change form, which you can find on the school website: www.
cvcsd.stier.org - under the Transportation Department link.
Over the summer months, we will be working to re-route our buses
based on the number of students per route, bus capacity, and which
school the students on each route are traveling to/from.
In the interest of keeping costs down, this year we are asking that you
send an updated transportation information form no later than July 31.
If your address, phone, or other information has already changed, or will
change over the summer, please give us that information as soon as possible so we can set up our bus routes for September.
We will be sending out post cards in August with your child’s bus information. If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact
the transportation office at 762-6850.
Thank you,
Susanne L. Ticknor, supervisor of transportation
District website awarded for DASA/anti-bullying information
The Chenango Valley Central School District website was recently recognized
by the Liberty Partnership Program’s Youth Advisory Council for the site’s information, resources and anti-bullying advocacy.
The New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) seeks to provide students with a safe and supportive environment free of discrimination, intimidation and bullying. The law requires school districts to enact policies, reporting
procedures and responses to bullying.
Binghamton University students involved in the Youth Advisory Council
reviewed the DASA information on all local school district websites, evaluating the amount of information, ease of use and overall effectiveness of each
site. The students determined that Chenango Valley’s website offered the most
comprehensive and easy-to-navigate DASA and anti-bullying information.
Chenango Valley Board of Education President Gerald
Abbey, left, and Interim Superintendent David Gill, right,
hold a plaque presented to the district in recognition of the
anti-bullying information on the district website.
Former CV Assistant Superintendent Mary Waskie, who currently works for
Binghamton University and coordinates the Olweus anti-bullying program at
CV and several other school districts, presented a plaque to the district at the
June Board of Education meeting.

As I write this, preparations for the
graduation ceremony are well under way,
graduation parties are in full swing and
many are making final plans for summer
vacations.
Gerald Abbey,
President
Board of Education
But for many of our staff, summer is a time
to start gearing up for the next school
year. As soon as the graduation ceremony
ends, another school year begins behind
the scenes right away.
Our custodial and maintenance staff,
along with private contractors, will be
busy getting the buildings cleaned, repaired and improved.
One of the summer initiatives will be to strengthen our security
systems throughout the district, which will further enhance the
safety and well-being of our students and staff.
Our administrators will be developing ways to increase student
and staff achievement, and teachers will be working on
professional development initiatives and curriculum mapping.
Throughout the district, our staff will be working hard to make
sure everything is ready for students next year.
As all this summer work goes on behind the scenes, the
consolidation study will soon be sent to the New York State
Department of Education (NYSED) for review. If NYSED deems
the study to have met its guidelines for consolidation, approval
will go to both boards of education. The boards will have a
chance to review the study and set meeting dates for public
comment. Meeting dates will be advertised in the newspaper,
our website and on our building message boards.
After the public meetings, both boards will decide whether or
not to take the next step of holding a public vote. A public vote
will be held only if both boards agree to proceed. Two public
votes would be held, with the first likely in October. If this is
passed by a simple majority in both districts, a final vote will be
held, likely in December. If this final public vote passes in both
districts by a simple majority, the consolidation would become
a reality.
Please participate in any way you can. Your input is vital. I
implore each of you to attend the public meetings, share your
opinions with me or any other CV school board member, and
participate in any public votes that may be held.
In closing, I hope all of you have an enjoyable summer. We will
be ready on September 5 for another exciting and memorable
school year.

A triple scoop of thanks
The BaCh of CV and the Music Department extend sincere thanks to the CV community for
supporting the Annual Ice Cream Social and Band Concert. The beautiful sunny weather was
perfect for a fun-filled evening of music and ice cream treats. CV families and friends were
entertained by the very talented students in the Chenango Bridge Elementary fifth- and sixthgrade combined Concert Band, and the Middle School and High School Concert Bands.
A “triple scoop of thanks” to all who contributed goodies for the event, plus our hard-working
volunteers and the custodial staff who worked tirelessly to help make the evening possible. It is
through this wonderful teamwork that the event was such as success.
The “Bottles for BaCh” bottle/can collections at concerts has been a successful endeavor and
will be continued throughout the next school year. Thank you all for your donations! Have an
enjoyable summer.

Athletics
‘Baggataway’ 2013
The word Baggataway is a Native American word for a “great gathering to play lacrosse.” Such as gathering took place at CV on
Saturday, June 1 as CV lacrosse held the first annual “Lax Day.” The day began with a youth clinic that saw participants of the CV
lacrosse program as well as several team alumni work with players from our local youth teams. The young players learned about
face-offs, defensive techniques, shooting mechanics and drills to improve their game.
Immediately after the youth clinic, the field was cleared and transformed for a CV lacrosse alumni game. Thirty former players as
well as former lacrosse coach Pete Weston came out and showcased their post-high school abilities under the blazing sun. The pace
was fast and furious and the game went into overtime before Mike “Tall” Ball scored the game-winner for the dark jerseys.
Overall, everyone had a great time and both the young players as well as the alumni look forward to next year’s event.
A special congratulations is extended to Cameron Fedish, Josh Klepfer and Kyle Moyer, who returned to CV for the day’s events
fresh off their Division II National Championship at LeMoyne College.
Solid showing for Zach Wyatt at

Congratulations to Zach Wyatt on a solid performance June 1-3
at the NYS Golf Championships at Cornell University. Zach was
one of the 99 golfers participating in the event, and he shot
rounds of 80 and 89 to finish in 57th place in the final rankings
for the state.
Tom Boburka, Section IV Class B champion in the 100 meter
dash and 200 meter dash, qualified for the state meet in the 100
meter. The meet was held in Middletown June 7 and 8. Tom
finished in 13th place with a time of 11.4 seconds.
Congratulations, Zach on an outstanding season!

Child & Family Plus screening
In the fall, look for our free, voluntary, and confidential social-emotional
health screening that will be sent home with all students enrolled in
Kindergarten through eighth grade. This is the seventh year of offering
our screening, which can help parents/guardians identify the emerging
strengths and difficulties that children may be experiencing.
The packets sent home with students will contain screening information,
a two-sided consent/screening form and a return envelope. Completed
screenings can be returned to the school, where they will be picked up
by Clinic Plus staff, or they can be mailed directly to the Clinic Plus office.
Parents/guardians will receive their child’s actual scores along with any
recommendations.
This year, parents/guardians will again have the option of allowing Clinic
Plus staff to share screening results with the school social worker. If you
would like to do so, simply place your initials in the designated space on
the consent form and the results will be forwarded to your home as well as
to the school social worker. If you participated in the past, we encourage
you to participate again this year as a way to better track the continued
development of your children. We will accept and score screenings
throughout the school year.
If you do not receive a packet, would like additional packets or have
questions regarding the screening, please contact Joyce Kelly at 778-1109
or [email protected].

Students from Mrs. Terwilliger’s gourmet foods class
helped earn a $1,000 award for the CHOW food
pantry through a national competition called Lead2Feed/World Hunger Student Leadership Challenge.
The competition, created by the USA Today Charitable Foundation, encouraged students to come up
with creative ideas to address hunger issues.
Mrs. Terwilliger’s student project for the competition
involved creating healthy recipes using non-perishable staple foods commonly on hand at food pantries. The students printed the recipes to distribute
to food pantry clients.
Students create scarecrow

Students in Mrs. Vesci’s fourth-grade class pose in
the photo below with the adorable (but hopefully
scary to predators) scarecrow they created for the
CHOW garden in Conklin. The garden, run by volunteers, provides fresh produce to area soup kitchens
and food pantries.
Parents: re-register now for new
emergency notification system
Effective June 30, Chenango Valley’s ED-Alert school closing/emergency notification service will be switched to a more efficient and costeffective system connected with our new district website.
Parents/guardians will need to re-register to continue receiving
notifications of school closings, delays or emergencies.
Please visit our new website www.cvcsd.stier.org to register your email
address in the new emergency alert system.

Port Dickinson Elementary
Port Dickinson had a very successful field day (see photos below) with the help of our PTA. Students had
a great day doing activities in the gym, playing Bingo in the multi-purpose room and face-painting in the
library. They were also treated to the fourth annual faculty talent show, which received a lot of laughs.
We also celebrated Flag Day (see photos, next page) with a community ceremony. All of our students sang
several patriotic songs they have been practicing. Several community members and family attended, and we
had special guests in uniform representing police and military.

Flag Day
Celebration
A sea of red, white and blue adorned the school
front lawn as Port Dickinson students and staff
joined together for the school’s annual Flag Day
ceremony.
Friends, neighbors, family members also attended
to honor the flag and pay tribute to the special
guests at the event -- local police force members,
active military personnel and U.S. veterans.
Students waved miniature flags and sang several
patriotic songs. Principal Mr. Pritchard gave a brief
history of flag day, and then the school flag was
raised into the bright, blue sky.
It was a spirited event as young and old joined together to
celebrate the American flag and the freedom it represents.

Chenango Bridge Elementary
Wow! What a year it has been at CB! Between the NYS tests, SLO exams, benchmark exams and daily
curriculum requirements, we still had time to promote such things as the Reading Promise, Olweus, and our
focus on respect and responsibility.
We had a fabulous end to the school year with many fun activities, including trips to the coal mines, Wonder
Works and the zoo, plus golfing, swimming, Career Day and a pie-eating contest. We also held our endof-the-year carnival and “moving-up” ceremonies. The carnival is our way to show our appreciation for the
tremendous effort put forth by our students all year. The moving-up ceremonies signify the passage to the

next grade on the education ladder. We would like to wish the sixth grade students (the class of 2019) the best
as they move on to the middle school. We hope their foundation at Port Dickinson and Chenango Bridge will
contribute to future successes. We will also be welcoming the new fourth grade students who are leaving Port Dickinson Elementary
to join us at Chenango Bridge.
I would like to thank all of the volunteers for their time and/or financial support this year, including the CB PTA. Without all of your
help and generosity, many of our activities would not be possible.
Finally, I would like to wish the very best to Theo Moomey (25 years at CB) and Linda Bucci (26 years at CB, 36 in education) as they
begin their retirements. They will certainly be missed at Chenango Bridge. I hope all of the students enjoy their summer break and
family time. For those of us at CB, it’s also time to look forward to the summer months, as we enjoy a little rest and also spend time
planning and preparing to make the 2013-14 school year as fulfilling as ever.

Sixth-graders awarded at “moving-up” ceremony
Sixth-graders were all smiles as they walked across the CVHS stage signifying their “moving up” to middle school. Several students
were also presented with awards recognizing academic achievement, perfect attendance and improvement. After working hard all
year, our sixth-graders are ready and eager to start middle school. We wish them the very best.

I hope you are having a great summer vacation.
After a very challenging and difficult school year, it is very important to get away from school, relax and have
fun! Spend some quality time with your families. Work at your summer job. Prepare for the upcoming athletic
season by working at your sport. Get the most out of your short vacation. It won’t be that long before the
school bus will stopping by your house to bring you in for the first day of school.
Have a great summer. I look forward to seeing you in September.

Students make ‘Prom Promise’
As the school year came to a close, students participated in Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) activities designed to raise
awareness of the consequences of drunk driving and other irresponsible behavior.
Two students read poems to their classmates about the dangers and possibly tragic outcomes of making destructive decisions. Students signed the poster below at right, indicating their promise to make responsible choices.
Below at left, several students proudly wear handmade t-shirts proclaiming that “drunk driving kills.”
