The Cavern
In many ways the Indians possessed ideals concerning myths and legends
right alongside the ancient Greeks. Both parties agreed on the philosophy
of “immortals”; people of spirits explained as “superior beings”. A body
of water such as a river, lake or ocean, played in the role of such belief.
The Indians referred to the earth as “Mother” and the Greeks had the
mythological female earth fertilized by the rain from a male heaven. Both
had the belief of the great serpent”. This information may have played in
real roles of both parties and /or purely myth and legend. Many ideals of
both parties provided the “good and bad” of both cultures. Many adult Indians told children tales in order to show them the differences of good and
evil. The Greeks told the tales for a psychological benefit often so needed
by anyone that would listen to the “knowledge” for any psychological
disorder they may possess, and/or needing some type of “hero-worship”.
Both believed the earth to be circular, although the Greeks didn’t believe
they could sail it because beyond any one point belonged strictly to the
“immortals”. The Indians and Greeks both believed their own land was
the center of the earth. Both believed in the “little people”. Though both
had many differences in the concept, both believed everything on earth
was somehow connected together.
By no means does what I have thus written mean the Greeks and Indians
were related. Their concepts were maybe identical, some were mythical
in nature. In one myth Zeus, the Greek god of the universe turns himself
into a woodpecker. The Indians honored the woodpecker both in battle
and in dance. There were many similarities, yet so many differences. For
one, it was purely mythical, for the other a realistic belief.
Like the Greeks, the Indians believed in supernatural beings, super physical and invisible beings. Like the Chaldeans, they divided an interval
of entities, The earth, heaven, clouds, the stars, and the House of lesser
mysteries (Hades)..The Greeks had similar ideas; each had messengers
between the spirits of each plane of surface. Often, a river flowed between
the dead and the living. The Egyptians and Greeks also had this idea in
mind. The number 4 meant possibly the idea that the Creator made His
universe in a square frame and the Pythagoreans had similar ideas paralleling the Indians concept.
Some philosophical views disagree that the American Indian believed in
one god and/or one Spirit. They refer to the “plumed serpent” as a major
concern, and the serpent was a messenger from the sun, much of that belief centers towards the Spanish people. Yet, there is evidence that prior
to missionaries appearing on the scene many Indian tribes believed in a
one, Great Spirit, though they did so honor the Great Serpent.
Philosophers and others often state the concerns of the sacred book referred to as Popol VUH in their explanations of the so-called non-existent
theory of a one spirit existence. One has to remember that this theory
correlates with the Spanish in Guatemala and the Popul VUH was created
by an author associated with the Spanish. It was translated into French
and published in 1861. The second book of the Popul VUH was done by
the examples of rituals by the Quiche nation.
So, what we have is a tribute relating to Central and South American
ideology, such as the beliefs of the Aztecs and the Incas. I agree that
the American Indian and the South American tribes have indeed, a lot in
common but yet so many differences also. The sacred book of the Popul
VUH had equal differences and similarities of many other civilizations,
including the Greeks and the Egyptians. It is stated that there is evidence
of the similarities of Indian beliefs correlating both with Islamic beliefs
and Solomon’s Temple. If it be the case that India beliefs go back as far
as Solomon then there may exist a theory that the Indians did believe in
one Great Spirit or one God.

We are planning the 1st Annual Winslow History Day.
It is our plan for this to be an annual event and each
year cover a different time period of Winslow History.
This (the 1st one) will cover the years of 1905 – 1930.
This was from the time Winslow was incorporated as
a town and includes its “hay day” of the resort era. We
are planning on having music, dramas, games for the
kids, demonstrations of skills and goods for sale of
everyday life of the era. Examples would be spinning,
quilting, carving, lemonade stand, Dutch oven cooking,
ice cream social, etc. We are asking for organizations
and individuals to join us and take this opportunity to
show off the skills of your ancestors and make some
money for your organization. If you can’t think of a
skill or demonstration, consider a food concession (we
would like for it to be something that was popular during that era). If you or your organization would like to
participate please fill out the Application for Participation found in Within Winslow or pick one up at city
hall. If you have questions please contact Renee or
Beverly at the museum 479-634-3091.
The old Assembly of God Church thrift store has
been renamed “The Least of These Thrift Shop”. It
is located in the old candle factory on Highway 71.
The hours are Monday thru Saturday 9:00 A.M. to
5:00 P.M.
The store has expanded its assortment of goods into
categories such as , sporting goods section, tool section, etc. Check with the ladies at the store to see
what other sections they have completed. If you have
no use for it and it’s in working condition consider
donating it so someone else can use it. They have a

Winslow History Day is being planned and sponsored by the Winslow Museum. We would like to invite local organizations and individuals to participate in this day long celebration of our town. We want demonstrations
and exhibits of period appropriate life in Winslow. You are allowed to sell
products that you demonstrate making. You may make and bring them as
long as you demonstrate how to make them during the celebration. The exception to this is food and drink, although we would prefer that it be period
also. We would like to see some games/toys for children, spinning, quilting,
carving, lemonade stand, dutch oven cooking, etc. We are planning on having music and dramas throughout the day.

Winslow Community Center
Association
know and share with my neighbors what the delay is in your making a decision.
This issue may seem insignificant to you, but our small community
lost one of its cohesive values when the schools closed. Reopening
it as a community center will be a boon to our community that has
very little holding it together. Please consider this when prioritizing
the many things that you have before you.
By Tanya Farris
As most are aware, the Winslow Community Center Association
and the community of Winslow suffered an unexpected and heartbreaking loss, when our friend and associate Gary Simpson died
suddenly from cancer. The WCCA is determined to continue forward with Gary’s vision of a community center that serves this
community by obtaining, rebuilding and repurposing the school
property. The Board will meet soon to address the open board seat
and the officer seat left vacant. For the foreseeable future, Jerry
Bromley will be acting President.
Sincerely,
Tanya Miller Farris
Winslow Community Center
Public Relations
The response from the Attorney General is attached.
In January I sent the following message to the Attorney General
using her online form:
Spring is sneaking in after what can only be considered a mild
winter. Hope everyone is getting those gardens ready for planting.
Upcoming events for the WCCA will always be found on our facebook page and here Within Winslow.
I am the public relations representative for the Winslow Community Center Association (WCCA). This association was formed for
the express purpose of obtaining the abandoned property that was
formally the Winslow Schools. This property has been out of use
since 2005 and every day that it remains empty it becomes more
dangerous and more of an eyesore for our community.
For well over a year, the WCCA has worked with the Greenland
School District (the District) to take possession of the property.
The District has determined that in order to get this property back
into a condition that it can be used by them for educational purposes will cost in excess of $3M. Obviously, if the District had
$3M to spend on improving school property, they would NOT find
it cost efficient to spend those dollars in Winslow. Our population
is dwindling and our children are receiving better education from
the school districts that they are now attending (Greenland, West
Fork and Mountainburg).

Honoring
Mr Weldon "Don" Ramey
The property sits on Highway 71, surrounded by homes. These
neighbors are suffering property value decline as this facility deteriorates daily. Additionally, the District is spending money to insure the property and cover any tax obligations. This is money the
District can better use elsewhere.
History Teacher at Winslow High School in the 70's
The history of the property is extensive. Generations of Winslow
residents attended school there and it is heartbreaking to see the
results of the neglect. When the two school districts were merged,
Greenland School District did not spend a single dime on the acquisition of the property. As a matter of fact, most of the property
that the facility occupies was donated to the Winslow School District over decades by residents of Winslow.

This is a simple matter. The property needs to be returned to the
community for the purpose of a Community Center. Our vision is
a place that is safe for students to come after school. A place for
recreation and for tutoring. A central place for our community to
utilize for a variety of programs not limited to the youth but to
include our aging population as well.
It is my understanding that this issue is before you and is awaiting
a decision. As an active member of the community, I would like to

YOU THINK ABOUT THAT

GOD IS LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN
Genesis 3:22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man
is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and
now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree
of life, and eat, and live for ever:
And thus began the forces of "Good" and "Evil". The
Bible teaches God is the "Good" and the Devil, Satan
is the "Evil" These two forces have been at war since
the fall of Man and still are in our society. Ezekiel 22:30
And I sought for a man among them, that should make
up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the
land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
"Good" and "Evil" is ever present in our society today
and Jesus set the Church to lead the fight for "Good"
and to do that the members, the believers must get involved as an influence for "Good" in the activities of
their community, State and Country. And to do that you
must be involved in politics no manner how great or
how small. It perplexes me to see professed believers,
Pastors, Ministers of the Gospel refuse to get involved.
The result, "Evil" is winning. Jesus was involved in
politics and his community. If you can't understand that
by reading the four Gospels then you can't read. Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord,
shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
There is a judgment day coming folks and everyone will
give an account of how their deeds measure up to God's
word and his Laws. Yes, God is mad at the Church.
That will be next month's article. Look for it. I’m Wesley Wood, YOU THINK ABOUT THAT! Checkout my
