WELCOME
We are excited to present a robust fall catalog to our community full of opportunities
to engage in the arts! As I am reading through the final proof, I realize a theme for our
fall catalog could be partnerships.
Davis Arts Center has always had a partnership with the artist community and we are
expanding that partnership by hosting the DAVIS ART STUDIO TOUR.
Taking place on October 15-16, tour goers can visit the studios of more than 30 local
artists and interact with the artists on a personal level. Davis Arts Center will sell
tickets for $10 beginning September 1.
A partnership with the City of Davis and our community: 100 FOR 100 NATURAL
HISTORY PROJECT celebrates the centennial of the City of Davis. The catalog’s
centerfold is dedicated to a step-by-step guide of how to participate in this
community based, city-wide project. We also have a special opportunity for materials
and lesson plans for teachers, funded by the Davis School Arts Foundation. Primary
funding of the project has been provided by a 2016 City of Davis Civic Arts Grant.
Davis Arts Center is embarking on a new partnership with THE SCHOOL OF THE
SACRAMENTO BALLET. The School of the Sacramento Ballet will be teaching their
Children’s Division (Ages 18 months to 9 years) at Davis Arts Center. This residency
program is an exciting way to bring new artists to our community and a model on
which we hope to expand.
Many COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ORGANIZATIONS have supported us through our
56 year history and for your ongoing support, I thank you. Next year is the 30th
birthday of our building and we are looking forward to celebrating with the
community. Over the last 3 decades, this building has welcomed hundreds of
thousands of people and has encouraged and nurtured a lifelong passion of the arts.
If you have visited us in the last few months, you have noticed that our restrooms
underwent their first remodel since 1987. I want to thank and acknowledge this
donation and project management support from the Tandem Properties Partners (Bill
and Nancy Roe, John and Judy Whitcombe, and Paul and Diane Makley). Additionally,
donations from the Big Day of Giving and facility rental revenue (thank you to those of
you who rent our facility for parties, milestones and fundraising events) have enabled
us to replace 4 original heating and air conditioning units.
Our teachers, students, staff and Board all thank you for supporting Davis Arts Center.
We look forward to strengthening existing PARTNERSHIPS and as well as developing
future ones.

Keats called autumn the season of “mellow
fruitfulness”. Tap into that quieter energy this
fall at Writing Salon, a casual, supportive space
that welcomes writers of all ages, experience
levels, and preferred creative genre, be it fiction,
poetry, memoir, drama, or some hybrid thereof.
Every week we’ll share pages and comment
constructively on each other’s work. You’re invited
to bring up to five double-spaced pages of your
own writing to the first class.
Small two-harness looms used in this class
offer many possibilities for making numerous
different items (such as pillows, bags, place
mats and scarves) while becoming familiar with
basic weaving terminology and techniques. Inkle
looms will also be available. This class is generally
taken for several sessions until students become
comfortable handling the equipment. The next
level class requires considerably more experience
and ability to work independently. (Price includes a

class young artists will learn some unique painting
techniques to create dreamlike effects for clouds
and backgrounds using watercolor, acrylics, pastel
and color pencil. Then we will let nature spark our

PAINTING/DRAWING FOR YOUNG
ARTISTS-MYSTERIOUS CREATURES
(AGES 6-12)
“I know how to knit, but I can only knit scarves”. If
this describes you, come take this class. If you can
knit and purl...you can knit socks. Knowing how
to knit in the round is helpful, but will be taught if
necessary. (Price includes a $15 materials fee).
Spend an 8-hour day in the weaving studio to
explore whether weaving is something you
like to do (if you are new to it) or to work on a
larger project or multiple projects (if you are
an experienced weaver). Here’s a wonderful
opportunity to make some holiday gifts. The
workshop is intended primarily for adults for
whom the weekly class schedule is not practical.
Another option is for parents to take the workshop
with their children, provided the children have
previously taken weaving classes. (Price includes a
$50 materials fee).
A hummingbird butterfly and a flying tiger are just
a few of the possible mysterious creatures that
young artists can create in this beginning class.
Lessons will be guided drawings of fanciful wings,
delicate feathers, animals, and other creative
details as well as basic watercolor techniques. Then
each student will design, draw, paint, name, and
tell the story of their unique creature. We will have
a special Halloween adventure on October 31st and
students are encouraged to wear a costume! (Price
includes a $9 materials fee).

Davis Arts Center is not responsible for
unattended children on the premises. We do not
assume responsibility if your child is dropped
off early or picked up late. Please come into
the building to confirm that your child gets to
class. Davis Arts Center is responsible only for
registered students. Parents are responsible for
children brought onto the premises who are not
registered in our classes.
Membership
Davis Arts Center does not
discriminate on the basis of race,
color, national origin, gender, age, or
disability in admission to its programs,
events, and activities, including its
hiring and employment practices.
It is not necessary to be a member
of Davis Arts Center in order to
take classes; however, membership
provides a $10 discount on classes,
which will be applied upon
registration. (Note: discount may
not apply to individual classes or to
selected workshops.) A membership
form is included in this catalog for your
convenience.
Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships for classes
are available through the Davis Arts Center
Scholarship Fund. Awards are based on
demonstrated financial need. Residents of Davis
and nearby areas are eligible. Applications are
due at least three weeks before the start of the
class desired.
Please note: Scholarships can be given to the
same family only once per year.
Instructors
Davis Arts Center instructor biographies
are available online at davisartscenter.org/
education/instructors. Davis Arts Center
instructors are independent contractors and
determine their own fees, class size, content
and style of instruction. Interested in teaching
a class? Submit your proposal online at
