Things of Interest
Christine sends her apologies for not being able to provide a message this month as her Computer is down. Things of Interest: October is our Birthday. 11 years old. Bon Voyage to Lynn and Alan Dow as they embark on a tour of Europe for the next two months. Interesting facts received from the BPW web site are: From solo mum to multi-millionaire. One of New Zealand's most successful businesswomen, Diane Foreman, has written a book about getting to the top and why she thinks businesses need to work harder to get more females into executive and board roles. In the Arena charts her rise from a 21-year-old solo mum barely able to pay her mortgage. Today she is worth about $180 million and is widely acknowledged as one of New Zealand's leading entrepreneur. The National Council of Women of New Zealand supports the College of Midwives taking action over what the college sees as structural sexism which impacts on midwives’ pay and conditions and the level of support women giving birth receive. Council National President Rae Duff said while over time women had made progress towards gender equality, inequality still persisted, including in the workplace. The meeting closed at 6.45pm BRAIN TEASER After a recent spate of home improvements, four couples were having a dinner party to discuss the additions to their houses. Alan had not recently had a new bathroom. Kara had not yet done her kitchen, but perhaps would update it next. Kate Sheppard was the leading light of the New Zealand women’s suffrage movement. In recent years her contribution to New Zealand’s identity has been acknowledged on the $10 note and a commemorative stamp. Brian, who is married to Maud, had not had new windows. Laura delighted in showing photographs of her new conservatory. Neither Charles nor David had a new kitchen. Julie had not had new windows. Alan, who also had not had windows, is not married to Laura and Charles is not married to Kara. Who is married to whom and what work had they recently undertaken, assuming that each couple had one improvement and no two couples had the same improvement. [Solution on page 7 as a means to fight for liquor prohibition. For Kate Sheppard, suffrage quickly became an end in itself. Speaking for a new generation, she argued, ‘We are tired of having a “sphere” doled out to us, and of being told that anything outside that sphere is “unwomanly”.’ Sheppard travelled the country, writing to newspapers, holding public meetings and lobbying members of Parliament. Born in Liverpool in 1847, Kate Malcolm migrated to Christchurch in her early twenties and in 1871 married merchant Walter Sheppard. In 1885 she joined the new WCTU, which advocated women’s suffrage In 1893 Kate Sheppard and her fellow suffragists gathered the signatures of nearly 32,000 women to demonstrate the groundswell of support for their cause. A 270-m-long petition – then the largest ever presented to Parliament – was unrolled across the chamber of the House with dramatic effe Despite the opposition of Premier Richard Seddon, the Electoral Act 1893 was passed by both houses of Parliament and became law on 19 September. The news took New Zealand by storm and inspired suffrage movements all over the world. Suffrage day will be celebrated with an afternoon of croquet followed by afternoon tea at the Doubtless Bay Croquet Club on September. 19th They can take up to 32 people to play so please tell your friends about this. Flat shoes will be required and dress in period costume optional. Numbers needed by September 15th The Pink Ribbon Street Appeal will be held nationwide on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October this year and we need volunteers for Friday only. Even if it’s just for two hours, you can make a difference and help raise funds for life saving education programmes and for people with breast cancer. If you would like to volunteer Please advise Shona. Once again Quiz Night was very successful with 53 people attending. Many thanks to all those who contributed a bottle and those who attended on the night. We have awarded our Outward Bound Scholarship to Samantha Marshall. Many of you will know Sam as she has worked as the receptionist at Doubtless Beauty and currently works at The Little Kitchen. Sam is booked in to take the Classic Course from the 5th November – 25th November 2015. We had eight applications in total, which we shortlisted to four. This short listing was done purely on the information presented on the application form. We then forwarded the four shortlisted applications to Outward Bound for approval. Such was the calibre of these four applicants that Outward Bound have decided to contact the three unsuccessful applicants and try to work with them to obtain other funding to enable them to also attend Outward Bound. This will be entirely between the applicant and Outward Bound however we are delighted that our candidates were of such a high standard. Leslie, Shona and Lynn interviewed the candidates and from those interviews and the reports from Outward Bound, we reached our decision. We have been extremely fortunate in that Sam’s employer at The Little Kitchen has not only allowed her the time away from work to attend the course but has been very actively encouraging her through the whole application and interview process. BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL WOMEN (BPW) ASIAPACIFIC REGIONAL MEETING, PUKEKOHE AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND INFLUENCING OTHERS REGISTRATION IS OPEN 9-10 April, 2016 Supporters Tour There have been indications of interest from some members regarding the recent email from BPW NZ proposing A “Tour of New Zealand”where Clubs may be able to host overseas visitors who will be attending this meeting. Brian is married to Maud and they had a new bathroom. Charles is married to Laura and they had a new conservatory. David is married to Kara and they had new windows. Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking .May we put away all pretence and meet each other face to face without self pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous. Let us take time for all things: Make us grow calm, serene, gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize that it is the little things that create differences: that in the big things of life we are one. And may we strive to touch and know the great human heart common to us all, and Oh Lord , do not let us forget to be kind.. We ask that we meet together as women, not allowing beliefs, religion, nationality, ethnicity or language to come between us. That these meetings enable us to move forward and advance the status of women throughout the world. That the value of women be recognized In our families, our communities, our workplaces, our country and the world. That we use our good ideas, our knowledge, Our experience to promote the worth of women. That we combine our strengths to move forward In peace, in serenity and in love. That women of all generations will do Their part to achieve harmony and Equality among all human beings.
