2013 Champions for Children Finalists
The Anson County Partnership for Children acknowledges and honors the 2013 Champions for Children Finalists who were chosen as a result of their tireless efforts to make Anson County a better place to be a child and
to raise a child.
HOLLA! (Helping Our Loves ones Learn and Achieve)
The HOLLA! organization was formed in 2005 as a grassroots initiative built upon the belief that it takes a village to raise a child.
Through its many community programs, HOLLA! has motivated
not only our children to excel in school, but has also spurred a
movement of parents to become more involved in the educational process of their children. HOLLA! embraces the whole child;
academically, socially, emotionally and physically, providing opportunities to build character and self-esteem. Working to counter the adverse effects that poverty has on children and the community, HOLLA! has created a haven for developing better futures
for our children and the building of strong families. Pictured are
HOLLA! founders Subrina Hough, Mary Little (1962-2011) and
HOLLA! CEO, Leon Gatewood.
Gail S. Litaker
Gail Litaker has taught music in Anson County schools for over 32 years.
Through her love of music, she has enriched the lives of children throughout
Anson County, enhancing their learning, and encouraging children to open
their minds to the learning of other subjects. Described as a ‘musician in
love with music,’ Gail has helped children to learn that they are a part of
something bigger than themselves and to take responsibility for helping others. Knowing that music can reach children that are sometimes unreachable
in other ways, Gail proposed and teaches a community children’s choir for
all of Anson County’s K-6 grade children, called Thursday’s Child. Thursday’s
Child children have been involved in numerous mission and good-deed projects as they learn through both music and action, to share with others in
our community and our world.

CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN FINALISTS
Charles H. Riddle
Charles Riddle is a retired educator, elementary school principal
and tireless children’s advocate. Since 1952, Charles has focused
his ‘powerful quiet energy’ on seeking and doing what’s best for
education, and ultimately, for children throughout Anson County.
As a dedicated devotee of humanity, Charles understands and
epitomizes the essential qualities of someone who believes in a
life of service towards others. A true ambassador for education,
Charles took every opportunity to promote Anson County Schools
and to mobilize forces for children including starting a clothing
closet for needy children while serving as principal of Central Elementary School in Wadesboro from 1956 to 1985. Charles also
served as a member of the Anson County Board of Education for
5 years, as a leader in the Anson County Boy Scouts for many
years and (with his wife Evelyn) in the First Baptist Church Nursery for decades.
Vancine Sturdivant
Vancine Sturdivant is known by many in Anson County as the guardian
of the young, the poor and the old in Anson County. Her generous,
lovable spirit permeates all that she does from her political activities
to her enlistment of everyone in her path to nurture people in her
community. In her efforts to ensure that children are given the opportunity to succeed, Vancine started the Back to School with Pride program that collects book bags and school supplies annually for hundreds of local children in need. Determined that every child will receive love and experience the joy of Christmas every year, Vancine
founded Toys for Tots in Anson County which provided toys for 3000
Anson County children in 2012. Vancine constantly advocates in support of education and children’s welfare. As an Anson County Commissioner, Vancine continues to promote our county and to champion
those in need in our community.
