The Decanter Panel rating is an
average of the scores of three panelists.
In this case, the panelists were Pedro
Ballesteros Torres, MW; Sarah Jane
Evans, MW; and Pierre Mansour.
TASTING NOTE: Dusty rose and violet
nose followed by a rich, supple palate –
super delicate. Only Rioja can do this,
and with American oak. The oak adds a
grainy texture and complexity to the fruit.
The finish is long, with a hint of spice.

A Napa Valley vineyard in winter.
For lovers of premium wines, California holds a rarefied position. California

encompasses the collectible, the cult and the innovative, and is the crowning glory of
iconic New World wines. It’s a place where some of the world’s most coveted wines are
crafted and where some of the most influential and exciting moments in modern winemaking history have occurred. Our collection contains newly released wines from some
of the most significant producers in California, from the highly touted 2012, ’13
and ’14 vintages. The additional stress placed on the vines by the drought conditions
experienced in these years gave rise to even greater degrees of concentration,
refinement and excellence in the final wines, pushing the highly sought-after treasures
from this already remarkable region to even loftier heights.

JONATA
A focus on red blends and small lots
spells success for this Screaming
Eagle offshoot.
The Santa Ynez Valley’s Jonata winery was founded by the
same people responsible for Screaming Eagle – a fact that will
cause any collector to salivate at the prospects it suggests.
Winemaker Matt Dees focuses his attention on producing small
quantities of exquisite Bordeaux- and Rhône-inspired blends.
From the moment their inaugural 2004 vintage was made
available, Jonata has enjoyed considerable critical acclaim.
The combination of the sheer brilliance of the wines, the critical
attention and the small quantities produced makes the wines
of Jonata some of the most coveted in all of California.

JONATA TODOS RED 2011
Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara County
The 2011 Todos is a blend of 75% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon,
4% Grenache, 4% Sangiovese, 2% Viognier, 1% Petit Verdot and
1% Merlot.
TASTING NOTE: More medium to full-bodied, with fantastic purity and
complexity, the 2011 Todos delivers classic blackberry, violets,
underbrush and liquid flower aromas and flavors as well as awesome
purity, integrated acidity and sweet tannin. More approachable and
lively than the 2010, it will have upwards of a decade of longevity.

BRANDLIN
Carrying on traditions forged in a
rugged and remote vineyard more
than a century old.
The Brandlin family is a true Napa Valley pioneer
and first began to grow grapes on Mount Veeder
in the 1870s. The vineyard remained in the family
until 1998, when this historic and coveted site
was purchased by the iconic Cuvaison Estate Wines,
famed for beautifully crafted Chardonnay and
Pinot Noir. To honour the Brandlin family, who
never released a wine under its own name,
Cuvaison branded the wines sourced from this
vineyard as a separate label bearing the Brandlin
name. Winemaker Steven Rogstad continues to
tend this rugged and remote vineyard by hand and
crafts a Cabernet, a Bordeaux blend and two
Zinfandels (from vines more than 90 years old)
from the fruit grown here.
Brandlin Vineyard sits at between 900 and
1,500 feet in the Mount Veeder AVA.
BRANDLIN ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012

TASTING NOTE: Exhibits a rich, tapered core of dark
berry, anise, cedar and loamy earth, with firm yet rounded
tannins that support the fruit mix, giving this traction and
depth. Drink now through 2028. Score: 92 (James Laube,

FROG’S
LEAP
The fine wines from this proponent
of dry farming show off a remarkable
sense of place.
Founded in 1981 by Larry and Jeannine Turley and John
and Julie Williams, the estate was named for the frogs that
Turley raised on his property – the legs of which supplied
many fine restaurants in the area, restaurants that now carry
their wines. An early advocate for organic practices, Frog’s
Leap has also embraced dry farming for all of its vineyards
– a practice that eschews irrigation and helps craft wines
that truly reflect a particular vintage, placing emphasis on
the distinct qualities imparted by the uniqueness of the soils
and the climatic vagaries of the year. Frog’s Leap’s singleminded approach to quality, precision and authenticity is
just one of the factors that continue to set it apart.
This red barn at Frog’s Leap
is an historic structure that
was rebuilt in the mid-1990s.
FROG’S LEAP CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013
Rutherford, Napa Valley
TASTING NOTE: A super attractive, mid-weight wine, the estate’s
2013 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up a classic expression of
Rutherford. Sweet red cherry, iron, smoke and chocolate are all
pushed forward, followed by a kick of energy that punctuates the
finish. Exuberant and racy, with fabulous intensity, the 2013 is
showing beautifully today. Despite its openness today, the 2013
has the pedigree to drink well for many years. Drinking window:

JOSEPH
PHELPS
An imaginative, influential
pioneer inspired by Rhône
and Burgundy.
Joseph Phelps Vineyards was the first winery in California
to produce a proprietary Bordeaux red blend, the remarkable
Insignia, now considered to be one of the world’s greatest
wines. But this was only one of many firsts for the winery’s
imaginative and resourceful founder, Joseph Phelps.
Undoubtedly one of Napa’s most influential and important
pioneers, he helped define Napa Cabernet through his
rich, concentrated wines. Phelps was an early believer in
Rhône varieties and was among the first to craft and bottle
a varietal Californian Syrah, and his love for Burgundy
was instrumental in his creation of popular Chardonnays
and Pinot Noirs. His son, Bill, has been at the helm since
2005, though Joseph continued to visit the winery nearly
every day until he passed away in April 2015 at the age of 87.
Joseph Phelps Vineyards operates 10
vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma.

THE
PRISONER
WINE
COMPANY
This master of inventiveness is a
standard-bearer for premium blends.
The Prisoner was originally launched in 2003 and quickly became a
favourite of the finest restaurants across the United States. This unique
Zinfandel-based proprietary blend is sourced from prime sites in over
80 vineyards and was inspired by the field blends of Napa’s early Italian
settlers. This winery has become a model for premium blends, and
through its super-popular flagship, The Prisoner, as well as Cuttings
(Cabernet/Petite Sirah/Syrah/Zinfandel), Blindfold (Viognier/
Roussanne/Marsanne/Grenache Blanc/Chenin Blanc/Semillon) and
Thorn (Merlot/Syrah/Malbec), has come to represent some of the
greatest expressions of the breadth, depth, character and inventiveness
to be found in California’s blends.

THE PRISONER 2014
Napa Valley
(Huneeus Vintners)
TASTING NOTE: Winemaker Jen Beloz honed her craft working
for 10 years with the Zinfandel specialist Joel Peterson of
Ravenswood. Her experience there shines in this Zinfandel blend,
itself a reflection of the field blends of the Italian immigrants who
originally settled Napa. Impressive aromas of blueberry, spice box
and smoke. Ripe and smooth and massively robust and mouthfilling. It’s easy to understand why the innovative Prisoner has
spawned so many imitators. Enjoy with flank steak with rosemary
and garlic. (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2016)

SHAFER
World-renowned wines crafted
by a history-changing pioneer.
Though John Shafer didn’t found his winery until 1979,
he came to Napa’s famed Stags Leap area – then a rugged
and neglected region that required extensive replanting –
in 1972, leaving a 23-year career in book publishing.
Today, he is recognized as one of the most important
pioneering producers in the region, and his wines are
considered among the finest in the world. Along with
Richard Steltzner, he was instrumental in seeing Stags
Leap designated as a distinct AVA in 1989. At the time,
only Howell Mountain and Carneros were officially
recognized sub-regions of the Napa Valley.
Shafer’s amphitheatre-shaped Hillside
Estate vineyard overlooks the winery.
SHAFER MERLOT 2013
Napa Valley
TASTING NOTE: A rich, explosive wine, the 2013 Merlot
races across the palate with dark red and blue fruit,
graphite, smoke, tobacco and menthol. Today, the 2013
is unusually firm, but it should start to soften with more
time in barrel. White flowers, spices and plums are laced
into the super-expressive finish. What a gorgeous wine
this is. A splash of Petit Verdot rounds out the blend.

STORYBOOK
MOUNTAIN
This Zinfandel specialist puts an
elegant and decidedly different stamp
on a classic.
Jerry Seps left a position teaching history at Stanford to
found Storybook in 1976. He purchased the Grimm
Brothers Winery, a Zinfandel specialist originally founded in
1882. Like all great stories, Storybook’s Zinfandels are
renowned for their high quality and long ageability. These
wines are noted for their precision and elegance, and
for being a more refined take on Zinfandel, one that Robert
Parker Jr. described as offering “…a Pinot Noir sensibility…”
(erobertparker.com, Dec. 2010).

STORYBOOK MOUNTAIN MAYACAMAS RANGE NAPA
ESTATE ZINFANDEL 2012
Napa Valley
TASTING NOTE: A well-balanced, zesty and succulent Zinfandel, in
a style uncommon in California to be sure. Dr. Jerry Seps has
proved over time that this variety can yield wines that can rightfully
be called elegant, without sacrificing the generous spicy, brambly
fruit that remains the grape’s signature. Moderately saturated
colour, genuine acids, fine-grained, grippy tannins and natural
vibrancy make this a real pleasure to drink. If you wrote off
Zinfandel as a clumsy, sweet and alcoholic wine, you owe it to
yourself, and the grape, to try the wines of Storybook Mountain.

PAUL
HOBBS
A much-lauded flying winemaker who also
puts the magic touch on his own wines.
Before establishing his own label in 1991, Paul Hobbs
worked with Opus One and was the winemaker at Simi for six
years. Hobbs’s reputation as a wine consultant is second to
none. A driving force in many wineries throughout California,
Hobbs is also in high demand internationally, with clients that
include more than 14 wineries in Argentina (not including his
own Argentine project, Viña Cobos, in Mendoza) and three in
Chile. The mere mention that Paul Hobbs was involved in the
creation of a wine is enough to generate great excitement
and boost sales. His own label constitutes the most singular
expression of his winemaking vision.
Pioneering winemaker Paul Hobbs
founded his eponymous winery in 1991.
PAUL HOBBS PINOT NOIR 2012
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
TASTING NOTE: Powerful and lush, this is a velvety, classically
styled Russian River Valley Pinot, weighty and lip smacking in
black cherry and touch of earth buoyed by finely hued acidity.
Perfectly enjoyable right now, it’ll age, too, the spicy undertones
coaxed to take center stage. #86 in the Wine Enthusiast

KISTLER
This Chard specialist
with a Burgundy bent has
made in-demand wines
for almost 40 years.
For many, Steve Kistler is the unofficial king
of Californian Chardonnay. Founded in 1978,
Kistler Vineyards rapidly caught the imagination (and the palates) of wine lovers with its
unparalleled range of complex, sophisticated
Chardonnays. Few Cali winemakers can
compete with these expressive, terroir-driven
gems. Robert Parker has described Kistler’s
wines as being Burgundian in spirit and crafted
in a manner that “captures the essence of the
beautiful fruit that is available in the viticultural
Shangri-La of the diverse microclimates
of Sonoma” (erobertparker.com, Jan. 2015).
These wines are in such high demand that
they are heavily allocated by the winery, with
many available only to members of the Kistler
Vineyards mailing list.
Kistler’s McCrea Vineyard sits on the
eastern flank of Sonoma Mountain.
KISTLER MCCREA VINEYARD
CHARDONNAY 2013

TASTING NOTE: Pretty and open-knit, the 2013
Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard graces the palate
with a lovely sense of understatement. Rich yellow
stone fruits take on light tropical and honeyed
inflections in the glass. Rich, voluptuous yet quintessentially medium in body, the 2013 should
drink well with minimal cellaring. Drinking window:

RIDGE
A benchmark for quality wines
proven with key wins on the
world stage.
The vineyards of the famed Monte Bello Ridge were
first planted in 1885, but it wasn’t until the founding
of Ridge Vineyards in 1959 that the property unveiled
its true potential. Ridge Vineyards rose to international
acclaim and assured its position in the annals of premium
winemaking history when its 1971 Monte Bello placed
among the top five red wines at the 1976 Judgment of
Paris. Ridge’s legendary status was reaffirmed when
Monte Bello then took first place overall at the
Judgment of Paris 30th Anniversary tasting in 2006.
From the Cabernet that made them famous to their
brilliant, expressive Chardonnays and of course their
elegantly styled, sleek, ripe Zinfandels, Ridge remains
one of California’s most important barometers of quality.
The Ridge winemaking team (from left): David

RIDGE THREE VALLEYS 2013
Sonoma Country
TASTING NOTE: A blend of 80% Zinfandel, 11% Carignan,
8% Petite Sirah and a splash of Alicante Bouschet,
the 2013 Three Valleys has lots of berry fruits, bramble,
spice-box and licorice in its medium-bodied, supple,
nicely textured and delicious profile. It doesn’t have the
structure or depth of the Lytton Spring, but it’s a
full-flavored, delicious wine to drink over the coming

RODNEY
STRONG
A trailblazing ethos leads
to multiple important firsts in
now-celebrated regions.
The story of Rodney Strong Vineyards began in 1959 when
the late Rodney Strong, a professional ballet dancer, retired
to Sonoma to begin a second career in winemaking. A true
trailblazer, he planted the first Chardonnay in what became
the renowned Chalk Hill AVA and is also credited with
producing the first single-vineyard Cabernet in the Alexander
Valley, 10 years before that celebrated area earned AVA
status. Rick Sayre, winemaker at Rodney Strong Vineyards
since 1979, has called it “Northern California’s largest
boutique winery” for its focused utilization of “sweet spots”
in its vineyards. Wine Enthusiast named Rodney Strong
Vineyards the 2013 American Winery of the Year,
summarizing the winery’s accomplishments by saying
that “there are many fine wineries in California, but few
manage to project such quality across so many price tiers …

RODNEY STRONG BROTHERS RIDGE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Proprietary Red Brothers is a blend
of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot from Alexander
Valley. 1,520 cases were bottled unfiltered and the consulting
winemaker was David Ramey. This is a rich, full-bodied, earthy
Cabernet Sauvignon wine with plenty of crème de cassis, bouquet
garni, licorice and a touch of new oak. It is moderately tannic
and will benefit from several years of bottle age. Look for it to evolve
over two decades or more. This is one of the strongest efforts

A family operation helmed

for California wine.
Jerry Lohr has been synonymous with premium
California wine since 1972 and was instrumental in establishing the reputation of Arroyo
Seco and Paso Robles as top-tier wineproducing regions. His tireless passion for the
pursuit of excellence in fine wine, and for
trumpeting and celebrating the cause of not
only his own wines but also the wines created
throughout California, led him to serve as
chair of the Wine Institute and to co-found
Wine Vision and the National Grape and Wine

Treana was founded in 1996 by the Hope family, a thirdgeneration farming family responsible for growing some of
the finest grapes in California, as well as for the Paso
Robles stalwart, Liberty School – an impressive lineage to
say the least. The Treana Red (composed of Cabernet and
Syrah) and the Treana White (Viognier and Marsanne) have
come to represent benchmark expressions of Paso Robles,
highlighting the quality and breadth of expression possible
here. Treana has recently added Chardonnay to the fold with
the release of its inaugural 2013 vintage, heralding yet
another exciting chapter in premium California wines.

the beauty
of Brunello
Some wines are synonymous with premium quality.
Such gems include the likes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
and Napa Cabernet, and, in Italy, Amarone, Barolo and
Brunello di Montalcino. It’s no coincidence, either: each
of these revered Italian icons is, by its very nature and
design, necessarily a cut above. Italy’s DOCG regulations
certify that Brunello and its ilk adhere to the highest
standards of site selection, varietal selection, crop yield,
maturation and ageing requirements and more, all
to ensure the wines deliver extraordinary character.
Moreover, a group of top producers have established
the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino – now
celebrating its 50th year – to ensure that Brunello
upholds respect for nature while providing wine lovers
with superb quality in the glass.

SUNNY DAYS
the 2010 story
Though weather patterns in Tuscany can be
unpredictable, in 2010, fortune smiled.
A cold winter was followed by a rainy spring,
refreshing the water table and giving
vineyards a basis for a strong growing season.
Flowering was later than usual, after which
a sunny and dry summer ripened the fruit surely
and steadily. Autumn, too, enjoyed sunny
skies, and a warm and dry September and
first half of October ensured that those
growers who were focused on quality and
refused to pick too early saw their resolve
richly rewarded. Overall, the combined elements
of the 2010 vintage in Montalcino provided
ideal ingredients for finesse, elegance and
structure across the region; valiant and
astute producers were able to add depth
and power as well.

Spring

GET SET FOR THE NEW SEASON
BY PLANNING A WEEKEND OF
SELF-GUIDED WINERY TOURS TO
SAMPLE THE LOCAL BOUNTY.
As the spring thaw approaches, the
great outdoors beckons. What better
way for wine lovers to explore it
than a visit to wine country? If you’re
the adventurous type, a great way to
enjoy the sights, tastes and colourful
characters of Ontario wine country
is to plan a self-guided winery tour.
Here are four tips for successful wine
touring and four sips from wineries in
Niagara to get you started.

VINTAGES 23
Happy news
for intrepid oenophiles is that Ontario wine country is
within easy road-trip distance of many residential centres. Prince Edward
County is less than three hours’ drive from Ottawa and just 60 minutes from
Kingston, Lake Erie North Shore is under two hours from London and a
mere 45 minutes from Windsor, and Niagara is two hours from Kitchener and
90 minutes from Toronto. Day or weekend getaways are within reach for
many bicyclists, too, particularly those who take advantage of bicycle-friendly
train routes (visit biketrain.ca).
Now – different strokes and all that – some people like to plan every aspect
in meticulous detail, while others like to go with the flow. Wherever you fall
on that spectrum, though, there are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind.
(Also visit winecountryontario.ca for a handy wine route planner by region.)
This vintage wagon at Henry of Pelham is a nod to the
Niagara Region’s agricultural history.
TIP #1 Dig a bit when
choosing wineries to visit.
Ontario’s wine scene is a
diverse place filled with
all kinds of gems that you
may find rewarding.
Word of mouth from a
trusted source is a great
starting point. Plenty of
wineries have rich descriptions and photos to peruse
online. Many, including
the four represented here,
also connect with wine
lovers on social media.
TIP #2 Visit three or
four wineries per day if
you plan to do any sightseeing. Any more than
that and you may well wish
you had more time to
relax and experience all
that each winery has to
offer. Part of what makes
wine touring so enjoyable
is taking the time to slow
down, shoot the breeze
with winemakers and
friends, and really savour
the experience of learning
what a winery and its
wines are all about.
TIP #3 Map your route
between wineries.
Depending on your mode
of transport and whether
expediency or scenery is
your primary interest,
consider the benefits of
the direct route against
the long and winding road.
When travelling by automobile, of course, designate
a driver each day.
TIP #4 Keep food in
mind when wine touring.
Specifically, give some
forethought to your lunch
and dinner plans. For one
thing, wine is best enjoyed
on a non-empty stomach
so you should keep fed
and hydrated. For another,
some wineries are closer
than others to exciting
dining spots. Some wineries
even have their own
elegant restaurants or cozy
cafés where hungry wine
travellers can enjoy a tasty
tidbit or fine meal.

This wine is an amazing value for an entry-level

It also has an interesting Canadian connection,
in that Newman has been ageing its wines in
Newfoundland since 1679. Following an epic

CLOS DE LOS SIETE 2012

TASTING NOTE: ... exhibits scents and flavors of
iris, blood orange, rose hip, candied lemon rind,
and cherry with glowing cyanic evocation of its pit.
The whole effect is reminiscent of the seductive
and Chambolle-like 2010 rendition of this cuvee,
though here the counterpoint of piquant elements
is more incisive, the mid-palate juiciness brighter
and conveying even greater animation. There is
also more evident tannins as well as some tightness
to the finish. This can certainly be enjoyed now,
but I suspect will benefit from 2-3 years in bottle
and perform well through at least 2020. Score: 91

NATIV TAURASI 2011
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Nativ’s 2011 Taurasi is an opulent
expression with dark garnet hues and beautiful
intensity on the bouquet. Dark fruit, dried blackberry, plum and licorice segue seamlessly to
Spanish cedar, dark vanilla bean and Indian spice.
The wine wears its oak element in heavy layers,
but it does so comfortably. This is a modern rendition of Taurasi with great tannic management
(thanks to the oak aging and the warm vintage),
soft fruit flavors and big power. The wine makes
a positive impact on all the senses. Drink: 20152020. Score: 93 (Monica Larner, erobertparker.com, April 2015)

TASTING NOTE: This 100% Nebbiolo wine
shows floral aromas of toast, baking spices and
earth tones, thanks to the 24 months it spends
in oak. It has great structure that supports dark
raspberry, black plum and cassis flavors and
an underpinning of chocolaty notes on the smooth
finish. The tannins are refined and they will
continue to mellow throughout the aging process
and become more round and well-structured.

TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino
represents a return to the traditional values
of Montalcino. The bouquet is buoyant and bright
with lingering tones of smoke, ash, balsam herb,
licorice and soy sauce. Those kinds of aromas
make Brunello such a wonderful wine and thankfully you get them in abundance here. Dry mineral
and brimstone also give the wine a sense of focus,
sharpness and cleanliness that is very appealing.

The wine’s concentration is soft and thick, and the
bouquet shows ripe cherry, plum and a hint of

TASTING NOTE: Mazzano is consistently the
tighter, sharper, more angular and structured of
Masi’s two excellent single vineyard Amarone,
thanks in no small measure to the slightly higher
elevation vineyard, but mostly the more ventilated
house where grapes are left to dry in the vineyard
... the Mazzano is not nearly ready to look at
currently, even in this ripe and generous vintage.
Significant fruit extract is hidden under a cloak of
tannins and surprising acids, and I suspect this is

San Felice has produced a Super Tuscan called Vigorello since the 1960s –
and if Vigorello is their Daredevil, then the 21st-century Poggibano is their
Jessica Jones. Sourced from the up-and-coming Maremma Toscana zone, this
dark and brooding blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon packs tons of
depth and power into an elegant frame. It can be the hero at your next dinner party.
