NSWERING S Ne A ERVICE 013 t2 usicians tt e r 6 6 A u g us M w s le Providing mutual support for woodwind players The FWBS is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation for professional freelance woodwind players. As a member, the FWBS helps you financially if you are unable to work due to accident or illness, through a form of co-operative insurance whereby each member pays out only if another member makes a claim. Typically, there are 2-3 claims annually, and on average it costs just £36 per year to be part of the FWBS. This is a fraction of the cost of other commercially available schemes. Established in 1978, our members include many of the UK’s leading woodwind players and MAS members. To join or find out more, please contact Neil Crossley (FWBS Secretary) at: [email protected] Pan Concerts for Children p c Pan Concerts for Children has been busy fund raising and forming partnerships since our last update in the MAS Newsletter. One of the exciting developments this year is that we have been made a Surrey Music Hub Partner and are currently organising a series of concerts/workshops spread over a two year period at four schools based in areas of severe deprivation in Surrey. The project is being spearheaded by The Berkeley Ensemble (TBE) with whom we have formed a close association. TBE are visiting the schools with a septet made up of Violin, Viola, ‘Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon. The project commenced in June this year and the ensemble are visiting the schools each term involving the children more and more. It will culminate with the children from two pairs of schools getting together and performing in a joint concert with TBE at an external venue in June 2014. On top of all this we are also currently planning on taking Pan Concerts to schools in deprived areas in the Midlands thanks to the fund raising activities of another of our partners ‘The Change Consortium’ based in Birmingham. Watch this space for more news of Pan Concerts activities in future MAS Newsletters. If you play in an ensemble and are interested in getting involved or have any thoughts or ideas on how to help raise more funds, please call and leave a message for us on 01306 508080. It is looking a little sad and bereft of activity. We would very much like to breathe some life into it, fill it with some stuff and make it more of an interactive community space where you can get involved too. So, if you have a solo recital or chamber concert that you would like to promote, a recent recording you wish to advertise, a televised performance you were involved in that you would like people to see, an instrument you need to sell, an instrumentalist you need to find or anything else that you wish to bring to the attention of MAS and your fellow MAS-istes, you are actively encouraged to post links on our Facebook page. Those who are less technologically au fait but still wishing to promote any of the above are more than welcome to contact the office and we will put together a short news article or Facebook post for you. All of us here at MAS are enthusiastic about music and, without being overly nosy, we are keen to know more about you as musicians and not just the dates, times and venues in your diary. We will keep updating you on current orchestral vacancies, news stories and anything else we feel you should know. CV Publication c hing Director y Tea If you would like to be included on our teaching register please call or email the office to ask for a quick and easy registration form.
