RIGA THE NEW BALTIC METROPOLIS
RIGAis the capital of Latvia and one of the biggest cities of the Baltic
region with close to a million inhabitants. The city is located on the banks of
the Daugava River, which flows into the Baltic Sea.
Riga was found in 1201, when the German missionary Bishop Albert
moved his residence here. Due to its convenient geographical location Riga in
the Middle Ages became an important trade and transit point and a leading
member of the Hanseatic League.
The architecture from this time is still visible in Riga as the main historical
monument is the Old Town with its numerous medieval buildings, churches,
guild houses and narrow cobblestone streets. Among the most important
sights are the Riga Castle, the 13th century Dome Cathedral, St. Peter's
Church, St. Jacob's Church, the Large and the Small Guild House, the Swedish
Gates and the Powder Tower. Around the Old Town the remains of the
medieval city fortifications can still be seen.
In the New Town, which was constructed after the city fortifications were
taken down in the middle of last century you will find the most impressive
collection of Art Nouveau that any European city can show. And between the
Old Town and the New Town stands the Freedom Monument, which was raised
in 1935 and again today is the symbol of the free and independent Latvian
republic.
Since Latvian independence, restored in 1991 Riga has changed a lot.
Extensive reconstruction works help Riga to regain the natural beauty it
possessed at the beginning of the century when the city was known as the
"small Paris" and new comfortable hotels, cozy restaurants and modern office
buildings are helping Riga to become the new Baltic metropolis. The recent
reopening of the National Opera House gave Riga one of the most beautiful
theaters in Europe.
With its old medieval ambiance, modern tourist infrastructure, vast
business possibilities and rich cultural life Riga has the potential to be a new
and interesting destination for conferences, conventions and incentives.
We are proud to present our conference and incentive manual for Riga. The
manual features our conference and incentive products, which have been
developed in close practical cooperation with serious European conference
planners and incentive houses.
Welcome to Riga!

SPECIAL FEATURES
The Rundale Palace
was built in the 18th century as the summer
residence of the Duke of Courland, Ernest
Johann von Biron. The palace was supposed
to have 2 floors and 2 wings and additional
servants' quarters, stables and a park. The
construction was inaugurated in 1736 and as
von Biron was favored by the Russian Czarina,
Anna Ivanovna, he succeeded in engaging the
Italian architect, Francesco Bartolomeo
Rastrelli, the main architect of the Winter
Palace in St. Petersburg. However, the
construction was interrupted in 1738 when von Biron and Rastrelli inaugurated the
construction of an even larger residence in the Courland capital of Jelgava. When
Czarina Anna Ivanova died in 1740 von Biron was exiled and could return
accompanied by Rastrelli only in 1763 when he was reinstated by the Russian
empress Catherina the 2nd. The palace and the interior were therefore only
completed in 1763-1768.
The palace was fairly devastated in the course of time and in 1972 a comprehensive
restoration of the palace was started. At present 40 rooms on the first and second
floors with original interior and furniture are open to the public. On the second floor
the central part of the palace houses the Duke's apartments. The Duchess and the
other members of the family were living in the western wing, where restoration works
are still being continued. The entire eastern wing was intended only for court
representation. There you will find the impressive Throne Hall, the White Hall and the
Small and Grand Gallery, which are all open to the public.
The maximum capacity of the program is 100/ 150 persons.

SPECIAL FEATURES
The Gauja National Park was established in 1973 and consists of more than 900
sq.km. The park offers a unique combination of picturesque hill
landscapes, the Gauja River, medieval castles, sculpture parks
and fauna and flora that are already extinct in many countries
in Europe. Of special interest are:
Sigulda: The entrance to the Gauja National Park, a small
idyllic town with 10.000 inhabitants. The foundation of the town
dates back in history and in the beginning of the 12th century
the German Order built a large castle here. The castle was
destroyed during the Great Nordic War - but the ruins of the
main building and the 2 towers are left and are used for dance
and song festivals. A new castle was built in 1881 and today it houses the city
council and a nice restaurant. From the castle ruins you have a fabulous view of the
Gauja River and you can go over the river by cable car. Just outside the town you
will find the famous bobsleigh track and possibilities of canoeing and rafting on the
Gauja River.
Turaida: On the other side of the river you
will find the Gutmann Cave, a huge red
sandstone cave and the ruins of the
Turaida
Castle.
The
castle
was
inaugurated by Bishop Albert of Riga and
completed in 1214. It remained untouched
until 1776 when it was seriously damaged
by a fire. Recently a part of the castle has
been rebuilt and it is again possible to
enter the tower and the main building.
Close to the castle you will find a little
wooden church from 1750, the Daina Hill
sculpture park of Latvian folksongs, and
not to forget - the Tomb of the "Rose of Turaida".
The "Rose of Turaida": During the 17th century Livonia and Turaida were captured
by the Swedes. The legend tells that in year 1601 a baby girl was found on the battle
field and raised in the valley on the foot of the Turaida Castle. She was called Maia
as she was found in May. 19 years old the girl was the most beautiful girl of the
valley and known as the "Rose of Turaida". She fell in love with Viktors, the gardener
from the nearby Sigulda Castle. But a Polish officer in Swedish service also wanted
the "Rose of Turaida". He managed to bring her to the Gutman Cave where he tried
to seduce her. Maia paid with her life to stay faithful to Victors and overwhelmed with
sorrow he could now bury his love. The grave with the tree he planted on it can still
be seen close to the Turaida Castle.
Cesis castle: The Cēsis castle is the most
impressive and best-preserved set of castle ruins
in Latvia, and it is certainly the most popular
attraction in the old part of Cēsis. The Cēsis
castle was one of the strongest fortresses that
the Livonian Order had in the entire Baltic region.
Built in the 13th century, the Cēsis castle was the
seat of the Livonian Order’s masters.
The maximum capacity of the program is 100
persons.

of famous buildings in Riga,
some Latvian money and a
glossary of Latvian words
and phrases. The teams are
then sent out into the city
from Congress Hall, located in the center near the Art Nouveau district. The itinerary
describes in minute detail the route they have to take, the buildings they have to see
and the tasks they have to achieve.
On the photo rally they have to visit 10 places, such as museums, monuments,
famous buildings and souvenir and food markets. In line with the tasks, they take a
bus or go on foot to each destination. Every stop on the route carries questions that
can only be answered by being there. Some physical evidence must prove their
presence at each place – a bus ticket, honey bought at the food market, etc.
The final destination is the Pyramida restaurant where the participants will be greeted
and asked to give a full account of their travels. The winners will be awarded and
afterwards all participants will sit down to a sumptuous lunch or dinner.

JOIN THE KGB FOR “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE”
Upon arrival in the hotel room, each guest finds a new
passport with his name and a message that he is now
a KGB agent assigned the task of discovering a secret
FBI plan and render it harmless. The task includes a
list of places where the plan could be found and
information on where he can find his colleagues –
“comrades” from the same KGB group. During a meal
in the hotel restaurant the guests have to find out who
is in the same KGB group and arrange a meeting with
them after the meal.
In the reception area they have to find the “secret person from the KGB” to get
instructions for their first step in the KGB – a rally. The mission begins immediately.
In front of the hotel Soviet-era cars and minibuses are parked, each with a
Latvian/Russian speaking driver who is waiting for the special signal or codeword
that the group is the right one and than they can start their mission.
There are some places that have to be visited where the secret plans can be found.
At each place they get some part of a phrase where the real address of the endpoint
is written. These points are: the monument of the
Latvian Riflemen, Victory Park and “Stalin’s birthday
cake” (the Academy of Sciences), where concealed
information must be found or where special KGB
agents are waiting for them. They have to find
where a monument to Lenin once stood by asking
local people, then visit the Motor Car Museum
where a KGB man next to Brezhnev's car will be
waiting for them, and finally go to the bar “Austrumu
Robeza” (Eastern Border) where they have to drink
a shot of vodka, eat black bread and salt and sing
any Russian song (preferably one with a communist
theme, but Kalinka-Malinka is also OK) to get the
next clue.
When they get the final phrase they understand that
the plan is hidden in the Nostalgia restaurant,
designed in the Soviet empire style, where the fastest group will find the plan and
have to destroy it in some way. The KGB arrives during the festive, Soviet-style
dinner to reward the winners and thank everybody who participated. All participants
are admitted to the communist youth organization the Young Pioneers.
