TRAINING AND COMPETENCE CENTRE
IKM Testing has its own training and education centre. The
centre contributes in reinforcing IKM’s competence, at the
same time as it is a popular course for our customers. We
will develop the centre and introduce new course offers. In
the time ahead this will provide a very useful facility, both for
internal and external use.
We hold courses either at Sola, Forus or locally at our clients.
In the future the centre will be moved into the new
headquarter at Sola, which is planned to be ready in 2009.
Bolt Working Services Course
IKM’s training and competence centre is approved by OLF
for education and certification of personnel in bolt working
services. The main objective of the training is to provide
basic knowledge in preparation, planning, execution and
documentation of work with flange assembling using bolt
working for flange connections on high pressure systems and
hydrocarbon carrying process systems. Controlled tightening
of flanges, the right choice of equipment, gaskets, bolts and
lubricants is vital to avoid accidents and loss of values on
pressurised facilities.

and have been tested thoroughly. The methods have been
approved by StatoilHydro following a pre-qualification
programme. Being able to monitor and control both pressure
and temperature, safe barriers can be established in new
parts of pipe systems. This renders possible installations,
modifications and maintenance when system upstream ice
plug is still in service.
Methods
• Liquid nitrogen with a cooling coil wrapped around the
area to be frozen ( PLS controlled cooling process)
• Dy ice, generated on site as part of the freezing process
(fixed cooling temperature)
Advantages
• Barriers can now be established in parts of systems that would otherwise be inaccessible
• Avoids complete shutdown of systems and equipment
• Saves valuable time normally lost in draining down and refilling a system
• Temperature and pressure control during the freezing process results in an approved barrier on many systems
• All freezing operations can be tested and verified in advance and previous experience is included in specific procedures

PRESSURE TESTING
The provision of testing by either vacuum or pressure to prove
the integrity of the system ensuring the system is ‘fit for
purpose’ and to obtain the relevant necessary certification.
These procedures can be functional on system components
such as pipes, tanks, valves and other equipment.
The operation is performed using fluids (liquid or gas) and all
metering instrumentation is supplied with relevant
traceable certification of calibration and documentation
packages. During testing the pressure will be visible on gauges,
and logged on data-, fuji-, or mechanical logger.
Extensive stocks of materials are held in store, these include
items such as blind flanges to cater for piping standards SAE,
SPO, DIN, API in RF, RTJ or hub type configurations, test plugs
for flange and weld integrity test (internal joint testers).

HYDROJETTING
Machinery and ancillary equipment that uses water as
cleaning/flushing fluid can be supplied to accommodate
the internal cleaning of pipe lines, piping, vessel and tank
systems. High pressure jetting hoses can be configured
with standard or rotating nozzle or supplied as a ‘Rotofan’, rotating hose package.
This will facilitate the removal of any inner preservation
layer in pipes by the use of ultra high-pressurised water
at pressures up to 2700 bar. This can compensate for
the necessity to sand blasting and can also be used on
all types of external surfaces. Hot water washing is also
available. IKM Testing can supply water-jetting equipment
capable of ultra high working pressures, which have the
capability to remove surface protections such as paint
and additionally the cold cutting of material.
Diesel or electrical drives can be supplied, to be used
onshore or offshore with the required certification.

13
BOLT WORKING SERVICES
IKM Testing provides improved methods for the tightening
of bolted flange connections. These methods of tightening
are essential for systems that are exposed to severe operating
conditions or where a correct stress distribution in the bolted
joint is required. These methods of controlled tightening are
commonly referred to as Bolt Torquing and Bolt Tensioning.
They are two totally different methods of bolt tightening, one
is a gradual method of induced load and the other
instantaneous. Torque tightening involves the rotation of the
nut on its bearing surface and is highly dependant on correct
and adequate lubrication, whilst tensioning induces the load
axially, by stretching the bolt within the elastic limits of its
material to supply the desired bolt load.
IKM Testing has extensive experience in the execution of
controlled tightening to any bolted joint and the provision of
mechanical joint integrity. Our skilled technicians will provide
a leak free joint on process systemconnections and offer the
added assurance of a leak free start up.

COLD CUTTING / CUTTING SERVICES
IKM Testings wide range of Tritool equipment, designed for
ease operation, deliver maximum performance to produce
expert results.
Simultaneous cutting and beveling capabilities minimizes
material loss for component replacement and/or repairs.
The split frame design of the ”Clamshell” lathe allows the
machine to separate and mount around the OD of the in-line
pipe or fittings for strong, stable clamping. Clamshells perform
precision in-line sever or simultaneous sever/bevel operations,
as well as weld end preparation and counterboring on open
ended pipe.
We can offer Tri Tool equipment for rent, or experienced staff
of qualified technicians, equipped with our latest machinery, to
perform on-site machining services.
15
PIPE LABELLING / FLOW CODING
Colour coding/flow coding ensures quick recognition of
medium and flow direction for any system.
IKM Testing can plan, procure materials, perform and
document the actual performance as part of our core business
area. Planning and performed is according to appropriate
standards or clients specific requirements.
Typically methods involve plastic tape glued to the pipe surface
and laminated plastic signs, fastened to the pipes by plastic
straps and locks. The required text is visible in an arrow shaped
window. Colours, text and type of marking/signs can be
customized to suit individual needs.
16
DRYING / AIR TREATMENT
Following the cleaning or flushing process it is normal to dry
the system. IKM Testing can offer services and equipment with
the capability to remove any moisture from within the system.
Drying of pipelines prior to product introduction can be
performed by the use of dry air or by vacuum drying. Drying of
hydraulic oil lines is performed by the use of a purifier, which
removes dissolved water and gas.
Hydraulic system water content can be measured by the use
of an analysis kit and for pipelines a dew point meter can be
used.
17
CHEMICAL CLEANING
The presence of internal scale and its removal is a major
challenge in process systems and its ancillary equipment. IKM
Testing is working proactively together with its customers to
find a effectual manner of solution. Modern chemistry and
technology gives industry access to more accommodating
chemicals. These new mixtures and their usage will maximise
system efficiency, maintain production economies and give an
assurance on the protection of the environment. IKM Testing
procedures are evolved to meet the highest demands of
environmental legislation, and the products we use have been
created to meet present day requirements.
Industry has placed a greater emphasis on long intervalls
between cleaning/maintenance, hence requiring improved
chemicals and methods. IKM Testing has devised cleaning
methods that can be used during decommissioning activities.
Chemical cleaning methods can also be utilised where there
has been the potential of LSA/NORM polluted scale.
At completion of the cleaning process, the waste scale can be
separated from the chemical mixture for further treatment.

HOT OIL FLUSHING
Cleanliness of systems is paramount prior to production and
certification of cleanness is essential during the construction/
commissioning phases of any project. Typically systems such as
lube oil, BOP, Wellhead Control and umbilical all require
certification of cleanliness. Other tubing and piping systems
may also have this requirement for cleanness.
IKM Testing have oil flushing units with the desired range of
reservoir capacities, pump output pressure and delivery suitable
for all pipeline dimensions and configurations, oil types and
viscosity. Analysis to determine the cleanness of systems can be
achieved by two methods manually by microscopic analysis or
automatically by computerised online particle counting.
Verification of cleanliness to standards such as ISO 4406 or
NAS 1683 will identify particle and water content. Flushing
units with diesel or electrical drives can be supplied, to be
used onshore and offshore with the required certification.
19
MAINTENANCE HEAT EXCHANGERS
A heat exchanger is a critical component in many processes.
IKM Testing has developed methods that enable a large extent
of In-Situ (on site) cleaning, inspection and maintenance with
minimal reaching time. Pro-active measurements implemented
on entire systems help prevent down time and will ensure
system integrity between planned maintenance and inspection
intervals.
Whole systems of users can be cleaned with minimal
interference/dismantling. Automatic flushing systems for entire
tube bundles shorten the flushing time on site considerably.
IKM Testing can perform all operations in its own workshops.
When responsible for a complete overhaul, the heat exchanger
is returned fully documented to the client once ready.
For work on offshore installations all equipment is Z-015
approved, and there are methods developed for work on
facilities that are in operation. Inspection, testing and pluging
operations are done by use of portable equipment that can be
transported by plane/helicopter along with the service
technician.

DRY ICE CLEANING
In many cases dry ice can replace hydrojetting, chemical
cleaning, brushing, mechanical cleaning or sand blasting. The
cleaning waste is limited to the removed matter, since the dry
ice vaporises and therefore doesn’t generate any additional
waste.
The use of dry ice is completely without abrasives and will not
harm any surfaces. The dry ice will expand (530 times) when
transitioning into gas, as it reaches the surface and breaks
loose the deposits. Dry ice in its solid form is without colour,
odour and taste, and is a natural part of our atmosphere. The
material is only exposed to a local cooling and therefore the
environment will not be polluted due to the dry ice.
When using dry ice the need for water and chemicals is
eliminated entirely and potential allergics will not be botherd
by evaporation in the time after cleaning.

DECOMMISSIONING / PASSIVATION
The passivation and preservation of pipeline systems
is normally associated with the decommissioning and
abandonment of installations and is normally performed by
use of the following options; nitrogen, steam, water, ultra high
pressure jetting or mechanical cleaning. Method selection is
normally dependant on the system to be treated content and
the pipe specification.
These processes will remove hydrocarbons, scale, mud, burnt
oil and other residues found on internal surfaces and they
will also remove marine growth and shellfish from external
surfaces. Waste and effluent is collected and treated in
accordance with current and specific environmental directives
and are certified as free of hydrocarbons.
Onshore and offshore certified equipment is available from our
wide range of stocks and include steam generators, nitrogen
equipment and high pressure jetting units.
IKM Testing has extensive experience in the removal of
hydrocarbons prior to shutdown and during decommissioning

PRESERVATION
Preservation is a description of the activities that are primarily
performed to maintain the quality of a component(s), and to
reduce future loss in value or effectiveness. Preservation can be
simply a ‘physical’ covering by the use of wrapping products or
by the provision of a protective coating in the form of a fluid,
powder, solid tablet, wax or grease, primarily performed to
provide long or short term protection against detrimental
effects from external elements.
IKM Testing provides all services required in the performance of
this work from planning, front-end engineering, formulation
of manuals, purchasing of preservation materials and the
provision of preservation services to the customer.
Environmentally ‘friendly’ chemicals are used for the removal
and prevention of corrosion to any surface type either to the
internal or external surfaces of the component. Pipeline and
Process systems can be injected with gas under pressure or at
vacuum to prevent further detrimental penetrations.
IKM provide coverings in the form of jointed (sewn) fabric
sheets, aluminium foil or tape, and in plastic, typically as covers
for flanges.

CLEANING OF SLOP WATER / X-CLEAN
X-Clean is a mobile system for removal of oil and particles in
water. The principle is based on flocculation and filtration. If
required an additional ”after polishing” step, by the use of a
polymer filter, can be utilized. The treated water is analysed on
site.
The system has been built into a 20` container and is approved
for use both onshore and offshore. The system is perfect for
water treatment of ballast water, slop-water, drilling water and
waste water from cleaning operations.
Skimmed oil/hydrocarbons can be re-injected into the process
or collected for destruction. Collected particles/sediments are
normally sent to destruction.
Typical capacity of the X-Clean system is approximately 5m3/h,
dependent on degree of pollution in the water.

TANK CLEANING / VTCS
IKM Testing performs cleaning of tanks offshore and onshore,
cleaning of ballast tanks when damaged, large storage tanks
for decommissioning and daily cleaning of tanks onboard
supply vessels.
In addition to the conventional methods used with manual
cleaning of the tanks, remote operated equipment is used
for internal circulation/flushing, usually in combination with
vacuum equipment. This is done to minimise/eliminate the use
of personnel inside the tanks.
We have equipment for washing, steaming, vacuum suction,
purging and inspection for all types of tanks. When necessary
we will accommodate the equipment for the individual tank.
When using more recent methods for cleaning one can avoid
any persons coming in contact with the waste from the
cleaning process, thus allowing hazardous waste to be handled
in a safer manner.
Vacuum Cleaning
Vacuum Tank Cleaning System (VTCS) has a series of
advantages compared to traditional tank cleaning. The
method requires less time and simplifies both the work and
the waste management. The system sucks out the deposit
and transports it to a tank which can be placed up to 80
meters away from the work area (several tanks may be used
to avoid interruptions in the cleaning process). The vacuum
pump ensures that the deposits are sucked through the hose
and directly to the storage tanks, which can then easily be
transported and emptied. The hose may be handled by one
person, which reduces the need for personnel considerably.

CUTTINGS TRANSPORT SYSTEM
The Cuttings Transport System (CTS) is in use by a large
number of operators and installations. The system provides a
well proven and tested mean of transporting the drill cuttings
associated with the top hole drilling. The systems are mobile
and built according to industrial standards. The system can be
adapted to suit most installations, vessels and drilling methods/
operations. Many installations have pre installed interfaces
(both topside and subsea) for use of this system.
Pumps are mainly electrical, but diesel driven pumps can be
used and provided.
The system is ejector based with large capacities. The cuttings
are sucked away and transported up to 400 meters by use of
installed special hoses.

Pig placement (pipe/spool)
Dewatering and drying is normally done by use of dry/warm air
or nitrogen. Preservation is done by filling the system with e.g.
glycol or chemically treated water.
• Waxing
• Gel filling
Waxing and gel filling is mostly done on spools that
consist of a material with low resistance to sea water, e.g.
13% chrome.
29
PIPELINE SERVICES
IKM Testing’s Subsea department performs all services related
to pre-commissioning and commissioning of pipeline systems,
including maintenance of existing pipes and pressure systems.
We work actively together with our clients to find optimal
technical solutions, accommodating efficiency, environment
and economy.
Activities/disciplines
• Pre-commissioning
This is a series of operations that needs to be done in order to
prepare a subsea pipeline system for use/filling of product.
• Commissioning
These operations normally come after pre-commissioning and
begin with introduction of the line matter/product into the
system, followed by pressurisation up to operational pressure.
This may be done in one single operation.
• Maintenance/servicing
A wide range of operations need to be done frequently
when existing pipelines shall be kept up to date. Examples of
servicing may include wax removal or change of use, e.g. from
production to water injection.
• FEED (Front End Engineering & Design)
To ensure that all pre-commissioning and commissioning
activities may be done in a sensible and cost efficient way,
IKM Testing performs FEED studies in the design phase of
subsea development projects. These studies include – in
addition to a description of how the pre-commissioning
operations can/should be done for that specific system –
functional requirements for e.g. pig traps, connection points,
dimensioning of piping and valve placement.
30
PIG is the most recognised term for a plug/tool that is inserted into a
pipe-system and pumped through that system with a given matter – an
operation which is also called pigging. Pigging is necessary in order to
operate a pipe system safe and efficiently and is done by cleaning and
control in the construction phase, efficient filling and drying in the startup phase and securing and isolation of repair areas.
Types of operations
In connection with the defined activities/disciplines, the following
operations are the more common ones:
• Flooding
• Cleaning
• Gauging
These are normally done by use of pigs, which are propelled through the
system.
•
•
•
•
High-speed flushing
Pressure testing
Dewatering
Drying/vacuum drying
Pig before and after use
Dewatering and drying is normally performed by use of pressurised air
or nitrogen. Alternatively dewatering can be done by filling the systems
with e.g. glycol or diesel.
