C entenar y u n i t e d m e t h o d i s t w i n s t o n - s a l e m "Preparing for the Future" Matthew 7:24-27 Sunday, May 22, 2016 11:00 am Sanctuary Focus: If any of you grew up going to the beach with your family, you may have had that common experience of building an elaborate sandcastle, laboring over it all day long with friends or siblings or cousins, only to come back at high tide and find it being washed away by the ocean. That transience is what Jesus is comparing to people who hear the Gospel but do not act on it. It is all well and good to hear the Good News, to learn the stories of Scripture and to know the teachings of the church; but if that does not result in any change in your life, any movement to engage the world differently, any motivation to reach out in love and service to your neighbor, you will be like that sandcastle that was so suddenly and easily swept away. Our parable for today tells us that we must build our houses—our faith, our lives—on rock, on solid ground. But what is the rock? Some might say it is a strong, mature faith—but that’s not the whole story. The contemporary Christian band Caedmon’s Call has a song whose chorus goes like this: “My faith is like shifting sand / Changed by every wave / My faith is like shifting sand / So I stand on grace.” We humans, even those of us with the deepest convictions and beliefs, are fallible, and if we stand on anything that is ours—even our faith—we risk having it washed out from under us. Instead, the rock is God’s grace and love. Throughout Christian history, Jesus has been called the Rock—and Jesus is the one on whom we build our hope. ~ The Reverend Sarah S. Voluntary Greeting & Mission Moment Introit *Call to Worship Psalm 40 Come, God, Creator, Holy Spirit ~ Johann Sebastian Bach We invite you to pass the Fellowship Folder located at the end of the pew. O Love, How Deep ~ DEO GRACIAS I put all my hope in the Lord. He leaned down to me; he listened to my cry for help. He lifted me out of the pit of death, out of the mud and filth, and set my feet on solid rock. He steadied my legs. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise for our God. Many people will learn of this and be amazed; they will trust the Lord. *Hymn of Procession (stanzas one through five) #79 Holy God, We Praise Thy Name ~ GROSSER GOTT *Affirmation of Faith Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress, or persecution or famine, or nakedness or peril or sword? No! In all things we are more than conquerors through the One who loved us. We are sure that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Thanks be to God! Amen. † Act of Praise #64 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty ~ NICAEA Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Prayers of the People The Lord's Prayer * please stand as you are able Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 3 Hymn #368 My Hope Is Built ~ THE SOLID ROCK (Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.) Hosanna in the highest! Scripture Matthew 7:24-27 "Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn't fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. But everybody who hears these words of mine and doesn't put them into practice will be like a fool who built a house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It fell and was completely destroyed." (CEB) This is the word of God for all God's people. Thanks be to God. CALLED CHARGE CONFERENCE Tuesday • May 24 • 7:00 pm • Memorial Auditorium Dr. Jeff Patterson, District Superintendent of the Yadkin Valley District, is authorizing a Charge Conference for Centenary United Methodist Church to consider several pieces of business. First, a Charge Conference must authorize any change in a pastor’s salary or benefits. We are using the next regularly scheduled Church Council meeting to serve as a called Charge Conference in preparation for the addition of Rev. Jeremy Pegram to our staff starting July 1. The other piece of business that will be considered at this meeting is authorization of continued study and planning for a possible renovation for Centenary United Methodist Church. These plans are part of the work of the Master Plan Update Team that has been working since October of 2015 and a continuation of concept design work from 2014. The Charge Conference will decide whether to authorize funds to complete schematic design work, establish a projected cost, and hire a financial consultant to do a feasibility study so that we will have the information we need in order to make a future formal proposal to be considered by the congregation. As a reminder, anyone is able to attend a called Charge Conference but the voting members consist of elected members of Church Council. Please be in prayer as our church leaders consider exciting next steps to discern these possible renovations and what is best for Centenary to do God’s work as we move into the future. 11 CHILDREN'S MINISTRY YOUTH MINISTRY Nursery Care May 22 Join us for our Youth Ministry events today! Centenary Summer School Sessions Sundays • 10:00 am • Memorial Auditorium PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE This summer we welcome to the stage members of our community to share how they try to live as a Christian in the context of daily life. You’ll hear how faith in God carried them through challenges, how they have grown from missed opportunities or through outright failure, and how living as a Christian on the job has become easier or perhaps harder through the years. Each session will end with a short Q/A period for audience feedback. Come for inspiration and to learn a little more about a fellow Centenary member. We have a few weeks still available for speakers if you know someone whom we should invite. Contact Rev Jonathan Brake. Each Wednesday, Centenary’s Chapel is open to everyone for silent prayer and quiet meditation from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm. BACKPACK MINISTRY Sometimes we fall into a trap where we think it’s a sign of weakness to ask for help. So when we’re stressed, discouraged, lonely, or sad, we try to keep our struggles hidden and are reluctant to ask for help. However, that’s not God’s plan. If you are experiencing a situation that you just can’t find your way out of, talk with Craig Ford (336-397-1353), Deena Morgan (336-692-2314) or Larry Oates (336816-6135) to find out more about having a Stephen Minister help you during this difficult time. All calls are confidential. Centenary supports the backpack ministries of three of our local schools: Brunson Elementary, Wiley Middle School and Reynolds High School. At the end of each week during the school year we send food home with almost 100 children to help get them through to the beginning of the following week when they can again count on a free breakfast and lunch at school. It costs $4.25 to feed one child each weekend. What did you spend on your most recent lunch out? Could you pack a lunch for an extra day to feed a child for a weekend? For more information about the back pack ministry contact Ashley Maner at [email protected]. Please invite your friends and those that you might feel are interested. Please direct any questions to Stacy Holley (336-397-1359)/sholley@centenary-ws. org. STEPHEN MINISTRY Stressed? Discouraged? Lonely? Sad? Don’t Suffer Alone.
