"Games People Play: Solitaire"
Mark 1:9-15
Sunday, October 11, 2015
10:10 am Rejoice!
Focus:
What's your favorite game? Do you like team sports or board games where each player is for him or herself? Do you like games of strategy or chance? Even when there isn't a board or card deck or court in front
of us, we all play games every day--not just CandyLand and Scrabble, but games with ourselves, with one
another, and with God. For the month of October, we explore just a few of these Games People Play by
looking at 3 simple games--Solitaire, Hide and Seek, and Twenty Questions--and an accompanying Bible
verse to examine how these games affect our interactions with one another and with God. Today, it's Solitaire. How do we think about individuality, about being alone? Is it good or bad? When and where do we
experience isolation? These and other questions are before us as we look at how Jesus often took time to
be alone and yet was also constantly with and for other people. Pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer
said, "Let [one] who cannot be alone beware of community... Let [one] who is not in community beware of
being alone." Each of us is created in the image of God, and together we form Christ's body. How do we
break down patterns of isolation and rejection while honoring each person's spiritual need for time apart?
Join us as we dig into the Games People Play and ask God what rules we ought to be playing by.

*Call to Worship
Lord, you call us into your garden of solitude to reflect upon life and
circumstance.
Give us ear to hear your voice.
As we listen to that still, small voice, may we use it as a springboard
to minister to the greater needs of others.
Give us ear to hear your voice and seek out the community of faith.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

Scripture
Mark 1:9-15
Solitaire ~ Mary Ann Smith
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized
by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water,
he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on
him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved;
with you I am well pleased." And the Spirit immediately drove him
out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted
by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on
him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming
the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."

ANNOUNCEMENTS
CELEBRATIONS AND CONCERNS
SCRIPTURE READERS
The chancel flowers are given in memory of
Mr. James A. Gray, Norwood and Pauline Gray
Robinson, Bahnson Gray and Anne P. Gray by their
families; and also in loving memory of Carolyn
Gilliam Warlick by her daughters Holly Gilliam, Lisa
Jennings and Gwyn Gilliam.
The Word of God is read in every worship service
held at Centenary, usually by the preacher or
another clergy person. But hearing the Word in
different voices, especially lay voices, reminds us
that all are called to respond to the hearing of God’s
Word, whether ordained or not. As we encourage
more participation by the laity in worship, which
we have already begun through the incorporation
of crucifers, acolytes, and lay communion servers,
we want to involve laity in the proclaiming of the
Word as well. If you feel called to offer your voice
by reading Scripture in Sunday worship, please
contact Rev. Sarah Howell (397-1348)/showell@
centenary-ws.org.
We celebrate the baptism of Miguel Eduardo Jerome
Londono, son of Miguel & Nicole, and brother of
Barbara Isabella (4).
We offer our prayers and concern for those who are
ill at home, hospitalized and in hospice care.
LAITY SERVICE AWARD RECOGNITION
October 18 • 3 pm • Clemmons UMC
You are invited to celebrate as we honor Danny
Newcomb. The speaker will be Jane Boatwright
Wood, Smoky Mountain District Lay Leader. This
worship service will also feature special music and
a time of recognition to award winners.
ROOTS REVIVAL
October 14 • 7:30 pm • Memorial Auditorium
Roots Revival is a midweek worship service
grounded in Americana/roots-based music featuring
Martha Bassett and friends. Our October worship
series is called “That’s Not in the Bible.” This week,
we pick up the saying “Everything happens for a
reason.” We’ll use Stevie Wonder’s “Blame It on the
Sun” and Iris Dement’s “Let the Mystery Be” to
tackle this phrase and see what the Bible actually
says about it. Join us each Wednesday at 7:30, and
come for more conversation on each Thursday in
October at noon as we discuss Adam Hamilton’s
book Making Sense of the Bible at Krankie’s Coffee
(211 E. 3rd St.). Learn more and join our email list
at www.rootsrevivalws.com or contact Rev. Sarah
Howell (397-1348)/[email protected].
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Centenary’s Chapel is open to everyone for silent
prayer and quiet meditation every Monday from
7:30 am until 5:30 pm.
Our October 12 prayer focus is the World
Wide Church. The Church that God established
reaches across the globe. Although we have many
denominations and expressions of how we follow
Jesus, we all profess faith in and love for Jesus. And
so we are mindful that we have brothers and sisters
in faith that gather in churches all around the world.
Prayers of the People is open to all, so invite friends
and those you may feel interested. Please direct
any questions to Stacy Holley (397-1359)sholley@
centenary-ws.org.
COMMUNICATIONS

MISSIONS
Loaves & Fishes • October Food of the Month
Loaves and Fishes, our financial assistance ministry
and food pantry, offers support and sustenance to
our neighbors each Tuesday morning. Your donations
help keep our food pantry stocked. The food of the
month for October is canned fruit and macaroni and
cheese dinners (no milk needed). Please bring your
food donations to the Missions bins, located just
inside the 4 ½ Street Entrance. Contact: Rev. Sarah
Howell (397-1348)/[email protected].
Haiti Mission Team
On October 8, Centenary sent a team of 11 people
on a mission trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where
this morning they are worshipping with our Haitian
brothers and sisters even as we gather in prayer and
praise in Winston-Salem. The group is working with
Haiti Outreach Ministries, a Haitian-run, holistic
outreach center whose mission is “Sharing the
Gospel with the people of Haiti through evangelism,
education and medical care.” We encourage you to
keep them in prayer as they travel, work, learn, and
grow.
Samaritan Ministries: October 16
On October 16 (and the 2nd Friday of each month
thereafter), Centenary will provide 6 overnight
volunteers to Samaritan Ministries, one of our
wonderful homeless shelters here in Winston-Salem.
Volunteers prepare supper and breakfast for up
to 80 homeless men. During the night, volunteers
watch the security monitors in two-hour shifts.
Dinner, breakfast, and separate sleeping quarters
are provided. Shelter team members volunteer once
a month and work from 6:15 pm until 7:30 am the
following day. To learn more and to sign up, contact
Rev. Sarah Howell (397-1348)/[email protected].
Winston-Salem Street School Needs Volunteers
Would you be willing to come once a week for an
hour and help a student work through an online
class? All subjects needed. No experience necessary,
just a willingness to invest in a student who could
use some help and encouragement. Please contact
Camille Galloway (721-1110) for more information.
Stop Hunger Now
October 25 • 2-4 pm • Memorial Auditorium
Centenary is hosting a meal-packing event for Stop
Hunger Now. We will gather in the auditorium from
2:00-4:00 pm so that we can pack some meals that
will "Go" and feed many around the world who
wake up hungry every day. We will be packaging
20,000 meals, so we need your help! There are jobs
for everyone tall and small. We could also use 5-7
people to come at 1:00 pm and help us unload our
materials from the truck into the auditorium. If you
are available to help unload the truck, please email
Ashley Maner ([email protected]). Let's
gather together as the family of God and make a
tangible difference in the lives of God's children!

current activities and future plans for the city. You
may register for the luncheon by contacting Charles

senior adults are invited to attend.
STEPHEN MINISTRY
Our Stephen Ministers are Ready to Care for You!
We all go through times in our life when we could
benefit from a little extra care and attention. That’s
what Stephen Ministers are for. Stephen Ministers
are members of Centenary who have been trained
to provide confidential, one-to-one, Christian care
to people who are going through a difficult time.
They will listen, care, encourage, pray with you and
for you, and provide regular support for you as your
need persists.
If you are experiencing a situation that you just can’t
find your way out of, talk with Craig Ford (3971353), Deena Morgan (692-2314) or Larry Oates
(816-4239) to find out more about having a Stephen
Minister help you during this difficult time. All calls
are confidential.
BACKPACK MINISTRY
This program provides food over the weekend for
children in our area who might not have access to any
other food during that time. We have heard from the
teachers of these children that they come to school
on Monday mornings better equipped to learn and
have a productive day at school because they aren't
as hungry. Did you know you can feed a child on
the weekends for an entire school year for just $200!
For more information about the back pack ministry
contact Ashley Maner at [email protected].

GLAD TIDINGS
It's Here! The Best Chocolate Party in Town!
Since 1921, See’s Candies has been an Americanmade, preservative-free chocolate candy unsurpassed
in quality, taste and a "cult-like" devotion from
delighted customers. Our informal pole at Glad
Tidings showed that everyone had an absolute
favorite.
If you’d like to attend a Latte with Lory Beth meeting
and you haven’t yet found a time that works, you
might consider signing yourself up for a meeting
here at church. Lory Beth looks forward to hearing
about your experiences at Centenary, and your hopes
for our future. There are three opportunities on the
calendar:
Monday, October 19 at 10:00 am
Sunday, November 1 at 5:00 pm
Wednesday, November 4 at 6:00 pm
Participation is limited, except on November 4. All
meetings are in the Parlor. Meetings last about 90
minutes, depending on the number of participants,
and light refreshments will be provided. Childcare
is available if requested at least 3 days in advance,
and children’s choir participants on November 4 will
have childcare available after choir ends so parents
can participate in the meeting. Go to www.centenaryws.org and click on the “Events” tab in the navigation
menu and then select "Sign Up" to register online or
contact Stacy Holley (397-1359)/[email protected].
POINSETTIAS FOR ADVENT
Poinsettia order forms are now available in the
information centers around the church campus. All
orders and payment are due by November 15.
You don't need an invitation to join the party or a
coupon to save big! Place your See’s Christmas Order
early and give your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers chocolates long known for quality without
compromise.
WOMEN'S NIGHT OF WORSHIP
Order forms are available in Glad Tidings or via
download at shopgladtidings.org. Place your order
before November 22 to pick up on December 6.
Remember… your purchases support Glad Tidings
outreach programs!
You are invited to a women's night of worship to
renew your spirit. Rev. Lory Beth Huffman is the
featured speaker and she is joined by the Roots
Revival Band. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
