C entenar y u n i t e d m e t h o d i s t w i n s t o n - s a l e m "Games People Play: Solitaire" Mark 1:9-15 Sunday, October 11, 2015 11:00 am Sanctuary Focus: What's your favorite game? Do you like team sports or board games where each player is for him or herself? Do you like games of strategy or chance? Even when there isn't a board or card deck or court in front of us, we all play games every day--not just CandyLand and Scrabble, but games with ourselves, with one another, and with God. For the month of October, we explore just a few of these Games People Play by looking at 3 simple games--Solitaire, Hide and Seek, and Twenty Questions--and an accompanying Bible verse to examine how these games affect our interactions with one another and with God. Today, it's Solitaire. How do we think about individuality, about being alone? Is it good or bad? When and where do we experience isolation? These and other questions are before us as we look at how Jesus often took time to be alone and yet was also constantly with and for other people. Pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "Let [one] who cannot be alone beware of community... Let [one] who is not in community beware of being alone." Each of us is created in the image of God, and together we form Christ's body. How do we break down patterns of isolation and rejection while honoring each person's spiritual need for time apart? Join us as we dig into the Games People Play and ask God what rules we ought to be playing by. ~ The Reverend Sarah S. You are invited to be in a spirit of prayer and meditation. Please silence all mobile communication devices. Voluntary Greeting & Mission Moment Introit *Call to Worship We invite you to pass the Fellowship Folder located at the end of the pew. All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name ~ DIADEM Lord, you call us into your garden of solitude to reflect upon life and circumstance. Give us ear to hear your voice. As we listen to that still, small voice, may we use it as a springboard to minister to the greater needs of others. Give us ear to hear your voice and seek out the community of faith. *Hymn of Procession #540 I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord ~ ST. THOMAS *Affirmation of Faith We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen. *Act of Praise #71 Glory Be to the Father ~ GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Prayers of the People The Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Baptismal Hymn Baptized in Water ~ BUNESSAN Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, cleansed by the blood of Christ, our King; heirs of salvation, trusting his promise, faithfully now God’s praises we sing. * please stand as you are able 3 Do you as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Miguel now before you in your care? With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Miguel with a community of love and forgiveness, that he may grow in his service to others. We will pray for him, that he may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life. Hymn Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ, our King; born of the Father, we are his children, joyfully now God’s praises we sing. (Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.) We Hear the Word Proclaimed Drama Scripture Mark 1:9-15 Solitaire ~ Mary Ann Smith In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." (CEB) This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Sermon *The Word in Song (Choir) #368 My Hope Is Built ~ THE SOLID ROCK My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand. (Choir and Congregation) When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found! Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne! On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand. The Word in Prayer 4 "The Games People Play: Solitaire" We Renew Our Commitment Offertory At the Name of Jesus ~ Ralph Vaughan Williams At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him, King of glory now; 'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array! Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious when from death he passed. Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father's breast; filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. Name him, brothers, name him, with love as strong as death, but with awe and wonder, and with bated breath; He is God the Saviour, He is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true; crown him as your captain in temptation's hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power. Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory, with his Angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now! *Doxology #95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow ~ OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication O God who is alone and on individuals but work that ends one and three, we ask your blessing on our being our being together. Accept these gifts, given by representing a body, that they might support isolation and creates community in Christ. Amen. We Go As God's People Into the World *Hymn of Recession #252 When Jesus Came to Jordan ~ MUNICH *Benediction *Choral Response God Be in My Head ~ John Rutter *Voluntary 5 Welcome Guests, Visitors & Friends The congregation and staff of Centenary welcome you to today’s worship. Gray, Norwood and Pauline Gray Robinson, Bahnson Gray and Anne P. Gray by their families; and also in loving memory of Carolyn Gilliam Warlick by her daughters Holly Gilliam, Lisa Jennings and Gwyn Gilliam. The Word of God is read in every worship service held at Centenary, usually by the preacher or another clergy person. But hearing the Word in different voices, especially lay voices, reminds us that all are called to respond to the hearing of God’s Word, whether ordained or not. As we encourage more participation by the laity in worship, which we have already begun through the incorporation of crucifers, acolytes, and lay communion servers, we want to involve laity in the proclaiming of the Word as well. If you feel called to offer your voice by reading Scripture in Sunday worship, please contact Rev. Sarah Howell (397-1348)/showell@ centenary-ws.org. We celebrate the baptism of Miguel Eduardo Jerome Londono, son of Miguel & Nicole, and brother of Barbara Isabella (4). We offer our prayers and concern for those who are ill at home, hospitalized and in hospice care. We all go through times in our life when we could benefit from a little extra care and attention. That’s what Stephen Ministers are for. Stephen Ministers are members of Centenary who have been trained to provide confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are going through a difficult time. They will listen, care, encourage, pray with you and for you, and provide regular support for you as your need persists. If you are experiencing a situation that you just can’t find your way out of, talk with Craig Ford (3971353), Deena Morgan (692-2314) or Larry Oates (816-4239) to find out more about having a Stephen Minister help you during this difficult time. All calls are confidential. BACKPACK MINISTRY This program provides food over the weekend for children in our area who might not have access to any other food during that time. We have heard from the teachers of these children that they come to school on Monday mornings better equipped to learn and have a productive day at school because they aren't as hungry. Did you know you can feed a child on the weekends for an entire school year for just $200!
