Mission Statement
The mission of the State University of New York Institute
of Technology at Utica/Rome (SUNYIT) is to offer
undergraduate studies in professional, technical, and
selected liberal arts fields, as well as graduate studies in
selected academic disciplines; to encourage participation in
educationally oriented community and public service; and
to support basic and applied research appropriate to its
curricula.
SUNYIT values and encourages academic and intellectual
achievement of the highest quality, broad access to persons
motivated to pursue college preparation and experience, the
breadth and depth provided by a sound and comprehensive
liberal arts education and the technical competencies
inherent to the applied disciplines. SUNYIT is committed
to the integration of these elements in a coherent program
of higher learning.
In addition, SUNYIT strives to provide a challenging,
culturally diverse, and supportive educational environment
that fosters and encourages active student participation in
residential life and student organizations, athletics and
recreation, and cultural and social events.

History
Established by the SUNY Board of Trustees in 1966, "Upper
Division College at Herkimer-Rome-Utica" began offering
graduate education classes to 300 students in 1969 using
classrooms at West Frankfort Elementary School. In May 1971,
the college began operating in the former Globe Mill building in
West Utica. The former mill was gradually remodeled into
classrooms, offices, and a library.
In 1973, the college was granted authority to offer bachelor's
degree programs; the first 58 full-time undergraduates began
attending classes in the fall. With growing enrollment, the
institution leased three additional buildings in West Utica and one
in Rome, and adopted a new name in 1977: the State University of
New York College ofTechnology at Utica-Rome.
In 1981, groundbreaking ceremonies were held in Marcy for the
new campus. The first building, Kunsela Hall, was completed in
1984, and the college operated two campuses during a transitional
period. In the 1987 fall semester, entering students attended all
classes at the new campus; in 1988-89, the college name was
changed to the "State University of New York Institute of
Technology at Utica-Rome." Other buildings followed: Donovan
Hall, the Campus Center, a service building, and two residential
complexes; Adirondack Residence Hall opened in 1991, Mohawk
Residence Hall opened in 1996.
4
The newest addition to the campus, the $14 million Cayan
Library, was dedicated in 2003. Four additional buildings are
planned: a $13.6 million student center, $20 million field house,
$27.5 million advanced technology center, and $23.5 million
residence hall; a groundbreaking ceremony for the student center
was held in October 2008.
Building on its undergraduate and graduate degree programs in
technology, professional studies, and the liberal arts, SUNYIT
continued to expand its academic offerings. In 2003, SUNYIT
launched the region's first Master of Business Administration in
Technology Management program, and has since added
additional programs in criminal justice and electrical
engineering (in cooperation with Binghamton University), as
well as a second MBA, in health services management. In 2003,
SUNYIT accepted its first class of freshmen; the first class was
graduated in May 2007, completing SUNYIT's transition from
transfer institution to four-year college.

Letter from President
B. Wolf Yeigh
Congratulations to the Class of
2010!
On behalf of the faculty and staff of
SUNYIT, I am pleased to offer you
my best wishes for success.
As you look forward to a future filled with promise, this
yearbook will serve to remind you of all those who had
important roles in your college experience: friends, faculty,
and many others. Let me urge to you to continue your
education; learning does not end with the earning of a degree.
Be open to new experiences as you grow professionally and
personally.
Again, my congratulations and please accept my invitation to
visit the growing SUNYIT campus as alumni, so that you may
see the continuation of the success in which you played a part.
Sincerely,
B. WolfYeigh, Ph.D., F.ASME
President

Letter from SA President
Christopher Roberts~-----...
My Fellow Students,
I hope this finds you well! Another year
at SUNYIT has come and gone, and for
many, like myself, the last semester is
over. This year has been packed with
learning,
growing,
fun,
and
accomplishments. SUNYIT, itself, has
done the same.
SUNYIT is getting a new Student Center, a new Athletic Facility,
and new Dorms to put all the new students into. With such exciting
growth, now is a great time to be a part of the SUNYIT family. Our
students are accomplishing things that they never have before. From
SUNYIT Baja Club placing very high at national competitions, to
Marketing Club sending students to learn abroad, Professional
Nurses Organization, helping others, first hand, in another part of
the world, and the Men's Basketball team pushing themselves
further than they have ever been before, SUNYIT students are
accomplishing more and more, at a record setting pace.
I hope that you enjoy your time here as much as I have, and I hope
that you have as many great memories of this place as I do. This
school is truly one of the best, and I hope you hold your time here,
and the friends you make, dear to you forever.
Sincerely,
Christopher J. Roberts
SUNYIT Student Association President, 2009-2010
