A Garden of Giving Thank you for joining us for this celebration. With your support over the last 29 years, Village Theatre has become a leading producer of professional musical theatre in the Pacific Northwest and has grown into one of the Puget Sound region’s largest theatres. Our Mainstage currently has more than 18,000 subscribers, among the highest of any theatre in all of Washington State, and an audience of more than 219,000 people enjoy our shows each year. We wouldn’t be here tonight without our loyal audiences and supporters. Whether you subscribe to our season or buy occasional single tickets; whether you donate to our Annual Fund or commit to a corporate sponsorship; whether you volunteer your time in our office, at our events, or on our committees and Board—you are a part of our family and community, and we are grateful for your participation and support. You are a vital part of our Village and you play a starring role in all we do. Tonight is more than just a celebration, it is a fundraiser to meet ambitious goals to keep our theatre growing strong. 100% of the funds raised from all the auction items goes right back to the Theatre to support our programming. With your support, we will touch the lives of more than 54,000 young people and their families through our Youth Education programs, KIDSTAGE and Pied Piper. We will continue to contribute ground-breaking new works to the national musical theatre scene through Village Originals. And we will continue to bring you the high-quality production values and full-scale professional productions you have come to expect on our Mainstage. But none of this would be possible without you. A tip of the hat to you, our loyal subscribers, our donors, our friends. Thank you for all of your support. Robb Hunt Executive Producer Steve Tomkins Artistic Director On the Town with Village Theatre Thank You Special Thanks to all of our Auction Item Donors MISSION The mission of Village Theatre is to remain a regionally recognized and nationally influential center of excellence in family theatre: • To promote a season of top quality productions; • To commission and produce new musicals that achieve national exposure; • To train young people in theatre skills for career opportunities and enriched lives; • To develop a broad-based appreciation for live theatre • To promote positive values through art. PROGRAMS Mainstage: At the center of Village Theatre’s programs is the Mainstage season, which runs from September-July with 30 weeks of production in Issaquah and 20 weeks of production in Everett, with a current subscriber base of more than 18,000. Each season sees new productions of two musicals from the American musical theatre canon, two new musicals, and one play. The two musicals are drawn from both familiar repertoire and deserving, less-produced works, and are conceived anew by regionally and nationally accomplished directors. The two new musicals, representing the culmination of each year’s Village Originals programming, will be a world or regional premiere, or a vital second or third production of an important new work. The play selection looks to the repertoire for a drama, comedy, or classic, which speaks to the multiple generations in the Theatre’s audience. 2 129 Thank You A Garden of Giving Special Thanks to all of our Auction Item Donors Seattle Shakespeare Company Seattle Sounders Seattle Symphony Secret Garden Bed and Breakfast Shari's Restaurants John & Julia Shaw Shilo Inns and Resorts Sue Short Mark & Christine Shuken John Simpson Matthew & Elizabeth Sinatro Sip at the Wine Bar and Restaurant Sizzleworks Cooking School Smith Tower Chinese Room & Observation Deck Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course Spectrum Dance Theater SPORT Restaurant and Bar Squak Mountain Greenhouses & Nursery Swedish Cultural Center T-Mobile, USA Tacoma Art Museum RJ Tancioco Tantalus Restaurant Taproot Theatre Company Ten Mercer The 5th Avenue Theatre The Baker Design Group The Broadway Rose Theatre Company The Children's Museum, Seattle The Comedy Underground The Edgewater Hotel The Fairmont Banff Springs The Fairmont Chicago The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel The Fairmont Empress The Fairmont Olympic Hotel The Fairmont Washington D.C. That mission is the creation of new musical theatre works. Village Originals is a year-round program that has enabled the development of 80 new musicals, and as such, is dedicated to every stage of new musical development. Full productions (including a production in each Mainstage season and developmental productions at our First Stage facility), workshops, readings, seminars, Meet the Author events, and more make the program an exceptional opportunity for artists and audiences alike to engage with new work. Youth Educations Programs: Village Theatre’s extensive and acclaimed Youth Education programs serve more than 54,000 young people annually and spring from the belief that a lifetime of theatre-going and an enduring appreciation for the art of live theatre must begin with fulfilling experiences in formative years. Our KIDSTAGE education program offers students the vital, unparalleled experience of creating live theatre of their own, through small-group intensive theatre classes taught by practicing theatre professionals, professionally directed and managed productions, and productions entirely created by students with the support of artist mentors. The Pied Piper program is dedicated to enriching the cultural lives of young people and supporting the classroom objectives of educators by bringing literature to life through professional performances for students, teachers, and families in the Puget Sound area. 3 On the Town with Village Theatre Thank You Special Thanks to all of our Auction Item Donors Village Theatre Board of Directors Derek Watanabe President Craig Watjen Vice President, Board Development Gary Kneepkens Vice President, Fundraising Mark Davis Treasurer John F. John was never what you would call a scholar. He has always declared he would have done much better in school if only the child next to him had applied himself a little more. With no formal training, John was hired as a weatherman in Grand Junction Colorado. After just six months, he was able to find Colorado on the map without looking. This skill was enough to get him hired in Champagne Illinios, at WCIA TV. Curley spent only 88 days there and never learned to spell Illinois. Other stops along the career track include Lancaster, PA; Springfield, VA; and Washington D.C. He picked up an Emmy for weather in 1993 and for interviewing and hosting in 1994. The zenith of his career was reached in 1995 when he was hired for Evening Magazine on KING TV. John quickly became the most recognized local TV personality and was voted by the readers of Seattle Weekly as their favorite “TV Guy.” John has earned numerous awards for his work in the community and in the field of broadcasting. He can be heard on Macy’s radio spots and seen (unfortunately) in various infomercials. John can also make balloon animals and grow a beard in less than a week. He received an Engineering Degree from the Academy and a Masters Degree in International Relations from Boston University. 7 On the Town with Village Theatre Thank You Bobbi Kotula, Musical Entertainment THANK YOU to our Volunteers for making the Auction & Gala possible! Bobbi has been a professional stage, screen and radio artist for the past 30 years and loves living in the Pacific Northwest. The combination of her comedic timing and powerfully flexible voice has won her accolades from critics and fans alike. Her most recent role was that of Mrs. Potts in Village Theatre’s award winning production, Disney’s Beauty & the Beast. One critic wrote, “Unlike many a past Mrs. Potts, Bobbi Kotula offers a warmly maternal, slightly more upper crust and starchier take on the role so strongly associated with Angela Lansbury, and stamps it indelibly as her own creation. It is doubtful her evanescent rendition of the Academy Award winning title song left a single dry eye in the house.” Her portrayal of Miss Hannigan in Village Theatre’s Annie won her a Footlighters Award. Of her one-woman show, Feels Like Home, critics called her “an unpredictable sprite of a chanteuse” and “charming, vulnerable, goofy, touching, plaintive, entertaining, but above all, glorious.” Ms. Kotula has performed leading roles with Village Theatre, The 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Seattle Group Theatre, California Theatre Center, and Showtunes! She is currently finishing work on the film Norman, which stars Richard Jenkins, and she looks forward to the release of the quirky comedy The Whole Truth, starring Eric Roberts & Elizabeth Rohm. TV credits include The Fugitive with Tim Daley and Amazing Grace with Patty Duke. Her voice characterizations have been heard on Backyard Baseball, Backyard Football, ZAP!, Freddie Fish 5, Sasha, Imagination Theatre, and Hollywood Video. Her debut album, Red Letter Love, is her musical version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling novel, Eat, Pray Love. It can be found on the web or on your plate. Bobbi studied for her Masters in Directing at Villanova University, received her Bachelor of Arts from Pennsylvania State University and is an accredited speech and drama teacher. Her work at Village Theatre’s evelopment department has led to her complete understanding of the phrase, “Show Business is Two Words.” Thanks for being here tonight. 8 Leslie Altier Tim Altier Krystle Armstrong Anna Caldwell Max Cobb Emily Cook Cather Cooper Ken Coulter Susan Craig Kathy Durrant Tonya Eddy Iris Elton Shannon Elwood Kaila Engmand Ashley Hahn Toyea L. His composing work is beginning to get some national attention, as he was named in both 2005 and 2006 as a finalist for the Fred Ebb Foundation Award honoring upand-coming new musical theatre writers. His new musical, Cold Turkey (for which he wrote the book, music and lyrics), was part of the 2004 Village Theatre New Works Festival, and it received a workshop at the Village in 2006. His holiday revue, Forbidden Xmas, was a fixture of the Seattle holiday scene from 1991 to 2005. Two of his full-length musical scores which were first heard at the Seattle Children’s Theatre, Time Again In OZ and Little Rock, have been performed in theatres across the country. Richard also wrote and directed The Mom & Pop Show, Nightclub Gentlemen, Bummer! Shoot! and The Donk Sisters. He has also written the scores for A Day At The Beach and Kenny’s Window, It Happened At The World’s Fair and NW Bookshelf, (L)imitations Of Life. Richard also collaborated with Martin Charnin on the new musical Love is Love, which had its world premiere at Village Theater in December 2007. Recent recordings include “Hanukkah Gloves” (a Charnin/Gray original song, featured on Carols For A Cure, Vol. 10) and Susannah Mars’ new CD from LML Music, Call It Home: The Music Of Richard Gray. As an actor, Richard’s favorite roles include “Albin/ZaZa” in La Cage Aux Folles and “Bud Frump” in How To Succeed… (both at Village Theatre); “Chico Marx” in A Day In Hollywood/A Night In The Ukraine at the 5th Avenue Theatre; and “L.M.” in Pump Boys And Dinettes at TAG. His numerous concert performances include Too Marvelous For Words, Nuts And Creamy Nougat with Cheyenne Jackson, Nightclub Gentlemen, David Austin’s An Unexpected Evening and ACT Theatre’s A Marvelous Party. His solo show, Gray Matter, has been performed at Seattle’s Town Hall, Portland’s Broadway Rose Theater, Tacoma Actor’s Guild and the Cabaret at the Crepe de Paris. Richard was a featured vocalist in Martin Charnin’s Rodgers And... at the 92nd St. Y in NYC (January,2009) alongside Hugh Panaro, Shelly Burch and Alton Fitzgerald White. 9 On the Town with Village Theatre Express Pay Save time at the end of the Auction and avoid those long check-out lines. Village Theatre, one of the nation’s leading regional producers of musical theatre, is dedicated to the development of new musicals that achieve national exposure. The changing economics of Broadway have severely curtailed the development of new musicals on what was once their primary stage. And while new musicals do still arrive in New York, amid the revivals and spectacles, commercial producers are increasingly unwilling to accept the risks of developing, much less producing, new work. And now we see it is the regional theatres that have come to represent an enduring and ever growing interest in the entire American musical theatre repertoire—a repertoire which must continue to grow. Much as the responsibility for the development of playwrights and new American plays largely migrated, a few decades ago, from increasingly querulous commercial producers to more adventurous, diverse, and mission-driven regional theatres, so must the mantle of new musical development be picked up by theatres off the Broadway grid. Village Theatre represents one of the strongest and fastest-growing not-for-profit regional musical theatres, with a cadre of artists and a professional staff experienced in the production and marketing of musical theatre, so it’s a natural step for the Theatre to share this vital responsibility. Musicals developed in the Village Originals program already have enriched the musical theatre repertoire in America and around the world: Ford’s Theatre in Washington DC, Pittsburgh Public, Marriott Lincolnshire in Chicago, Taipei Theatre offBroadway, National Theatre of Taiwan, The Cutting Room, New York City, the York Theatre off-Broadway and London. 50 Glamour Girl Get your glam on with 1 regular pedicure at French Nail in Mill Creek, deepcleansing European Aromatherapy Facial at Nelli’s in Seattle, $30 toward services at Moon Lodge Spa, 50-minute body massage and access to all facilities at Olympus Spa, a pair of Hotties Booties, pink nail file, pink nail polish, sleep mask, wash gloves, facial mask, and bath salts for ultimate relaxation!
