AUC’S DIVE FLAG AWARENESS SAFETY PROGRAM: DIVERS: BE SURE TO FLY YOUR FLAG but don’t assume this will absolutely ensure your safety from boats! AVOID areas of heavy boat traffic whenever possible. Stay within 100-300 FT (30-100 Meters) of your DIVE FLAG. Always ascend carefully & slowly, listening for boat traffic and be prepared to descend quickly again if necessary. BOATERS: THIS FLAG MEANS THERE ARE DIVERS BELOW, REDUCE YOUR SPEED AND KEEP CLEAR BY AT LEAST: 100—300 FT (30-100 Meters) DISTANCE FROM FLAG! (100 ft clear in river/channel, 300 ft clear in open water). WORK TOGETHER TO PREVENT INJURIES!! The red with white diagonal striped flag is probably the most commonly recognized DIVER DOWN FLAG! It is becoming more & more used by both divers and dive boats. The white with blue “Alpha” is the official DIVER DOWN FLAG usually used by dive boats operating in International navigable areas. Many dive boats fly both flags! Hitch-Hikers Guide to a Drysuit Pocket Last spring a group of Alberta divers were out near Victoria to enjoy one of the easiest wreck dives in the area. Main attraction: Deep Cove Wreck/Rail Barge. No one seems to know exactly how it got there or when it sank, although there are plenty of stories banded about by local divers. One is that it was scuttled for an insurance scam, another has it as just placed there as a breakwater for the marina until it later sank in a storm or just from neglect . Most of the wooden structure has collapsed but for a few metal ribs, the bow & boilers that remain. It is now home to many schools of perch, lingcod, copper & yellowtail rockfish. Abundantly covered with white & orange plumose anemones, several species of nudibranchs, sea stars, crabs, jellyfish—just the usual assortment of West Coast life. The area around the wreck is mostly tidal mud flats and are strewn with debris—moon snails and old bottles which are home to mosshead warbonnets & the tiny “Ruby” octopus (see photo). A small speed boat is also lying nearby the main wreck which lies in about 50-60 ft of water. You can get lost easily—even with a compass and you have to be very careful of the boat traffic in and out of Deep Cove Marina. Or shore dive right at the small waterside park at Setchell Point. There is also a small rocky reef which drops down to 60-70 ft. Visibility can range from 10’ up to 50’ as is usual for the Sannich Inlet. Some current is possible depending on tides. Our divers from Edmonton actually ran into divers from Cold Lake on this warm, rainy spring afternoon at the dive site! Our fearless guide, Mike & the only local diver present was also a transplanted Albertan! Joe Grace’s Hitch-hiker was safely returned to Mother Ocean after posing for pics! info@alberta underwatercouncil.com WEBSITE: Albertaunderwatercouncil.com Fax 780-427-8139 PH: 780-427-1925 TOLL FREE PH: 1-888-307-8561 11759 Groat Road Edmonton, AB T5M 3K6 DIVE ALBERTA EVENTS: WIN $250 GIFT CERT from the Alberta Dive Store of your choice just by entering 2 AUC Dive Alberta Events in 2006 ALBERTA UNDERWATER COUNCIL OCT 14th—WAINWRIGHT BUFFALO DIVERS—PUMPKIN DIVE at Clear Lake near Wainwright SEPT ??
