My dear parishioners,
Can you believe that it’s the tenth of July? It’s no secret that summer passes quickly. It is time
for a more leisurely pace of life. The staff and I will be away on vacation at various times, hopefully it
will not cause you much inconvenience. I will be away for two consecutive weeks which is something
that I have never done before, but circumstances beyond my control conspired to make this the case. The
person my family rents from on the Cape offered us only the last week of July. We’ve been going there
for many years and all are fond of the location. Then the committed brotherhood that I belong to , The
Fraternity of Priests, scheduled their annual gathering the first week of August in Kansas City, Kansas.
I would usually be very anxious about all of this but I have great confidence in our parish staff
who are so dedicated to the mission of St. Roch’s. To say nothing of the quality of faith and dedication of
many of our parishioners. For instance under the guidance of the staff the various teams have been meeting regularly concerning refreshing our worship space.
Teri Rawson and other members of the team have been contacting companies and individual
craftsmen about painting, lighting and carpeting. The estimates are coming in. But the greatest challenge
for this team is, you guessed it, choosing the colors of paint.
I was given a long page of ideas that have creatively been put forward by the Fundraising Team.
Terry Ann Renaud has excitedly spoken to me about some of the most inventive proposals. Along with
these will come the good old standard direct appeal. You can be sure that we will be hearing more about
this necessary campaign.
Deacon Paul Connolly and I have had regular meetings with the Spiritual Renewal Team talking
to parishioners of other parishes about the tools they have been using successfully to refresh the interior
spiritual space where true worship happens. Hopefully when we begin this in the autumn it will strengthen
the relationship we have with Jesus and give us the desire to invite others to join us.
Wonderfully a fourth team has formed to ensure that we are worshipping in a clean and neat
environment; I am greatly appreciative of the industriousness of the Housekeeping Team. A much fuller
and detailed report will be made at our next General Parish Meeting which will be on Sunday, August 21.
Just as we were completing this week’s bulletin we received word that our parish has met its
goal in the Partners in Charity annual appeal. I will have more to say about this next week but just let me
express my gratitude to all those parishioners who made sacrifices financially to sustain the mission of our
Catholic Church throughout Worcester County.

Frank Runyeon Returns to St. Roch

Frank Runyeon has national acclaim for
his work as a translator and performer of
Biblical texts over the past 20 years performing the gospel for hundreds of thousands of people in almost every state in America. He is perhaps still best
known, however, for his many roles on television. He
starred for seven years as Steve Andropoulos on A s the
World Turns opposite Meg Ryan, garnering the second
highest ratings in the history of daytime television. He
appeared for four years as Father Michael Donnelly on the
Emmy award-winning Santa Barbara, and as tycoon Simon
Romero on General Hospital, opposite Emma
Samms. Frank has also guest-starred in recurring roles on
Falcon Crest as chess genius Jovan Dmytryk, on Melrose
Place as Father Tom, on All My Children as Forrest Williams, and on L.A . LA W as talk-show host Brooks Tapman. He was recently nominated for a Daytime Emmy for
his guest-starring role as Angel on The Y oung & the Restless.
Frank starred as Detective Marty Lowery in the feature
film Sudden Death and as Pierre Lyon in Bolero. He received rave reviews on the New York stage as Hercules in
Aristophanes' The Birds, and in regional theater as Clifford
in Deathtrap and Oliver Costello in The Spider's W eb.
Frank is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in Religion. After studying acting in New Yor k
and Los Angeles for 15 years, he attended Fuller Seminary
in preparation for the writing and performance of his first
one-man play, A FRA ID!:The Gospel of Mark, (Which he
performed here at St Roch in the 90’s*). He continued his
studies at Yale Divinity School and General Theological
Seminary, receiving a Masters, with honors, in l994. He
workshopped his first productions in cooperation with the
faculty of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA, and the
University of Dayton.
Frank has now translated and adapted seven Biblical texts
for performance as one-man dramas: The Gospel of Mark:
“AFRAID!”; Sermon on the Mount; The 3 ½ Stories of
Christmas*; The Gospel of John: “SIGNS”; SALT &
LIGHT: a comedy for kids ; The Letter of James: “What
Are You Doing?”; LUKE: Stories on the Road .
Frank is also a popular youth speaker on the subject of the
mass media, using humor to reveal the shortcomings of the
media's world view. His subjects include: Hollywood vs.
Faith: The Struggle to Live Faithfully in the Media Age;
The Man Behind the Curtain (for public schools or prep
schools); Treasure (or Life After Prep School--What They
Don't Tell You). He has spoken at Woodrow Wilson
School at Princeton University, as commencement speaker
at several prep schools, and keynoter at state and national
youth conventions.
Frank is busy writing an autobiographical book: ESCA PE
FROM HOLLYWOOD: An Actor's Unlikely Journey to
Faith, due out next year. He and his wife Annie, live in Los
Angeles with their three children.

Adult Education and Enrichment is
always a priority at St Roch’s Religious
Education Office. This Summer from July
through August we will begin a course in
Ecclesiology. (For enrichment or catechist
certification)
Question: "What is Ecclesiology?"
Answer: Ecclesiology is the study of the chur ch. The
word Ecclesiology comes from two Greek words meaning "assembly" and "word" - combining to mean "the
study of the church." The church is the assembly of believers who belong to God. Ecclesiology is crucial to understand God's purpose for believers in the world today.
What is the church? Many people today
understand the church to be a building.
This is not the biblical understanding of
church. The root meaning of “church”
is not that of a building, but of people.

What is the purpose of the church? Accor ding to
Scripture, the purpose and activities of the church should
be: (1) teaching Biblical doctrine, (2) providing a place
of fellowship for believers, (3) observing the Lord’s supper, and (4) praying.
Well, it is the purpose St. Roch to do our best in each of
these four activities. So, let’s begin with the study of
church. Those preparing towards certification will be
able to complete this course requirement this summer.

July 1st - 10th for vacation. The actual (online) course
will begin July 11th.

The Family of Friends Vital 3.0 Challenge fr om Mr .
Stoltz’ 7th and 8th grade gave is still on! Many of the
rooms in the building still need a thorough cleaning,
paint and upgraded technology.
The challenge to other groups or families to adopt a
room in the center stands. There are 2 offices, a foyer, 2
hallways, 2 restrooms, 2 smaller rooms with storage,
1 classroom, all have very large windows in need of
new treatments.
Summer is going quickly before we know plans for the
school and college fall semester will be upon us.
Wish list: paint supplies, rags, brushes, rollers, drop
cloths, window coverings and gift cards to Home
Depot, or Walmart. Lots of helping hands and continued tender loving care.
The Religious Ed Office is planning schedules to meet
the needs of our families.
July 11-15 we hope to shampoo all
the carpets.

The Parent Session on Sunday, September 18 is for parents of children in grades 2 or above who will prepare
for First Sacraments this year, the meeting will be
held in the church hall at 9:40- 10:50 AM during the
regular class time for First Sacrament Candidates will
explain the Reconciliation and Eucharist program for
those Families. Class schedules would be given that
day.

The process of Junior/Senior High Religious Education
and Youth Ministry as well as the guidelines for preparation for Confirmation will be presented.

I don’t think we understand sin, well not as
G*d sees sin. I love the flow of Jesus’s message this
week. Temptation; who or what tempts you? Sometimes temptation is so imbedded into our hearts that
we can’t even see it anymore. And Jesus, fully
human and understanding our needs, says go to
confession don’t fight it alone. Mary, all the saints,
Jesus Christ and G*d himself are all ready to help
with our struggle. Do not be afraid to call out for it.
But the Devil knows how to work us, hope is powerful and when we lose hope we tend never to cry out
for all that help. Victory is there for the asking,
never being alone with your struggles and then
knowing that through all this pain and suffering we
have shown our G*d our fidelity to him because we
called out for help. I love this message, we beat
ourselves up (I know I do) on every sin, funny, Jesus
never says that. He tells us to ask for help and his
mother and an army of saints will mobilize to your
aid. Hmm, sounds like an army of mercy to our
rescue.

God, and we had so much joy together
last week that we are already planning
the next Tea. Some volunteers have
already come forward planning what they will do, the
