Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to recognize the ordinal numbers
first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. Here is your chance to help
your child practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

FIRST THROUGH FIFTH
Parent Pointer —
Your child is learning about the ordinal numbers first through fifth.
We use and hear these numbers in our lives all the time. For example,
you are the second person in line; please go to the fifth window; you
are the third person to tell me that! Understanding the meaning of
these words is an important skill for your child to learn. It will help
him or her in school as well as enable him or her to understand
conversations and daily situations.
Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read and talk about the A New Way to Say Numbers
reference sheet with your child. Read each description to your child
and have him or her point to the lollipop you are describing. Have your
child count first, second, etc. each time you point to a new lollipop.
Have your child explain how he or she knows the placement of the
lollipop by saying the numbers in order: first, second, third, fourth,
and fifth. Read the directions to the Which Object Am I? activity
with your child. Do the example and then have your child choose the
triangle and the square each time. Continue this activity until you feel
your child understands the terms first, second, third, fourth, and
fifth. Have fun!
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to have
your child show what he or she knows.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

A New Way to Say Numbers
You have been practicing your counting, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
However, sometimes when you say your numbers, you say them
in a different way.
Look at the boy and the row of lollipops.
Below each lollipop is a word that tells
where the lollipop is compared to the boy.
first
second
third
fourth
fifth
The striped lollipop is the first lollipop from the boy.
The spotted lollipop is the second lollipop from the boy.
The lollipop with the bite taken out of it is the third
lollipop from the boy.
The grape lollipop is the fourth lollipop from the boy.
The lemon lollipop is the fifth lollipop from the boy.

Now, since the square says “Third,” ask:
Which is the third mouse from the cat?
Place the triangle and the square facedown with the other

understands the terms first, second, third, fourth, and fifth.
Have fun doing this activity with your child!
