Picture a neighborhood block party in a small, mid-western town. Cowboys
and cowgirls, clowns, jugglers, miniature horses, and vintage popcorn and
cotton candy machines. Country music mixed with rap music and Reggaeton. Yes, that’s right. Country tunes chiming alongside Latin-inspired
melodies. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy. We’re in Miami, and this
was no ordinary party. YEE-HAW!
Radio Lollipop turned ten August 9th, and true to form, the volunteers put
on one heck of a soiree. The only thing missing was the ferris wheel, but
we couldn’t fit one into Miami Children’s Hospital’s Playroom. So we
improvised. We moseyed down over to the dance floor and strutted our
stuff – shoulder to shoulder – with Miami Children’s Hospital patients. Of
course, we had some guidance. The good fellows from Carl’s Entertainment were gracious enough to teach us the two-step and other complicated moves we city folks are not accustomed to doing. Hey, we tried!
Our very own DJ Laz from Power 96 stopped by to entertain, sign some
autographs, and spin the tunes, along with a very special donation. (see
details on page two). Miami’s own Pitbull was also on hand to celebrate
Radio Lollipop’s milestone birthday.
Radio Lollipop took advantage of this special night to recognize some very
special volunteers for reaching a milestone of their own: a ten-year
commitment to this wonderful organization. Nora Barriere (Terrific
Tuesdays), Ken Wilder (Terrific Tuesdays), Marc Kuperman (Thrilling
Thursdays), and Iris Cicero (Super Saturdays) were among the pioneers
of Radio Lollipop Miami. Also honored was Lynn Heyman, Director of the
Community and Volunteer Recourses Department and Radio Lollipop
USA Board Member, who was instrumental in bringing Radio Lollipop to
Miami way back in 1995.
The event was truly spectacular!
On October 28 & 29 Radio Lollipop held its annual Halloween fundraising event at Parrot Jungle. The volunteers
dressed in costumes ranging from cats, to butterflies, to super heroes. Although Saturday was quite wet and soggy, the
volunteers were still energetic and friendly with the park guests. The Sunday volunteers enjoyed a brighter day and were
kept busy with the larger crowd. Along with providing music and smiles, Radio Lollipop raised $375 in face painting. In
addition, Radio Lollipop will be receiving a portion of the admissions collected since Oct 21 through November 30.
Radio Lollipop would like to thank the Parrot Jungle for the opportunity, the University of Miami Nursing Student
Association who once again helped us staff the event, and especially all the volunteers who helped make this event a
success.
