myself introducing the third
addition of our newsletter,
with the half year already
completed - time really does
fly here at JG Speedfit.
I’m delighted to report that so far this year the Speedfit
Division is experiencing positive growth across all areas
of our business no more so than when I look at our
Layflat Pipe sales and the growth in Underfloor Heating.
Against such a healthy backdrop I’m incredibly excited
to announce the launch of our new innovative and
internet enabled UFH heating control System - JG Aura.
JG Aura will propel JG Speedfit into the next generation
of UFH heating controls, enabling smart control of
your UFH system at your fingertips from anywhere in
the world via the new JG Aura App.
JG Aura will deliver choice and ultimate control in
keeping with the demands of modern day living. I

Layflat pipe sales continue to go from strength to strength
helped in no small part by our “Every Metre Counts”
national van promotion. We’ve been inundated with

JG AURA HEATING CONTROLS
Innovation and forward thinking have always been
fundamental to our Research and Development
philosophy, making JG Speedfit the leading brand
you know today.
In line with our commitment to the continuous
improvement of our product ranges we decided
to look into a means of optimizing the way people
control their domestic central heating, which in
turn triggered the creation of our latest product
group - JG Aura.
JG Aura is the new underfloor heating control
concept, which allows for a more flexible and
efficient remote regulation of any central heating
system no matter where you are via the online
JG Aura App.
The system is designed to manage multiple
zones, offering individual time and temperature
regulation for each zone within the house.
This means JG Aura can give simultaneous
control of underfloor heating circuits, individual
radiators as well as wireless boiler switching
- all controlled by one Group Master or by
individual thermostats.
When developing JG Aura we wanted to design a
simple, yet versatile solution for UFH and central
heating system control. Our aim was to come up
with a thermostat technology that could perform
many functionalities both individually and when
part of a group.
4 IN 1 THERMOSTAT
For that purpose our JG Aura Thermostat is 4
products in 1, meaning it can be easily configured
as a Programmable Room Thermostat (PRT),
Group Control Thermostat, Group Thermostat or
a Hot Water Timer. The thermostats can operate
within a group of 8, which allows for the central
control of various functions such as Holiday, Party

and Frost, or they can leave the group any time
just at the press of a button.
JG AURA WIRELESS TRVS
Among the JG Aura components is our new
Wireless Thermostatic Radiator
Valve (TRV), which has been
designed to efficiently regulate
the hot water to each radiator.
The JG Aura TRV simply replaces
traditional radiator valves, making
installation quick and easy. The TRV’s
are controlled wirelessly by a JG Aura
thermostat in every room and can
send a signal to the JG Aura Network
that would then turn the boiler off when
a desired room temperature has been
reached.This system has been developed
not just for new-build projects, but it also
allows for an existing radiator system to be
turned into a smart energy saving network
in less than two hours and with no wet
plumbing work necessary.
SIMPLE
INSTALLATION
The JG Aura system has been
designed to be simple to install and set up,
while remaining flexible in what it will control. In
the JG Aura Wireless range, all communication
between the components is performed wirelessly
through a radio frequency (RF) signal. The
thermostats in that range can be mains powered,
however for even greater convenience they
could be entirely powered by batteries, making
installation completely wire-free.

Designed by Crest Nicholson, Kaleidoscope is the
new Cambridge housing development defined by
sophistication, aesthetics, comfort and style.
Situated in one of the most exclusive and desirable
areas of the historic city, the new vibrant living
environment of Kaleidoscope is within a walking
distance of key transport hubs allowing for a quick
commute to London, as well as access to emblematic
cultural spots and historic landmarks.
A total of 408 apartments are being constructed
with the final properties due for completion towards
the end of 2014, and all of them are equipped with
underfloor heating by JG Speedfit.
PG Bones, the principle plumbing and heating
contractor of Crest Nicholson, appointed JG Speedfit
to supply the plumbing components needed and assist
with the installation of the UFH systems in each of the
408 properties.
Toby Howard-Willis, JG Speedfit’s Technical Engineer,
said - “We have an excellent and long standing

relationship with PG Bones, working on a significant
number of projects over the past 15 years, but the
concept of underfloor heating is more sophisticated
than a standard plumbing procedure and was certainly
one of the elements that required significant attention
to detail.”
JG Speedfit also provided PG Bones with the Speedfit
Installer Training Program - a complementary service
available to any new plumbing professional, which
aims to train them to a competent standard. The
program covers a number of key elements such as
Project Design, Components, Installation, Best Practice
& Commissioning. Once the training has covered
all necessary aspects and the installation has been
supervised by the attending JG Speedfit Technical
Engineer, the new installer is able to complete the
Handover Pack, which the Developer retains as
evidence of the quality of installation.
Crest Nicholson have a number of other projects
throughout East Anglia where the JG Speedfit system
is being used, such as Rosewood in Colchester and
Kings Warren in Redlodge. Crest Nicholson are
already planning the next development in Cambridge
and the JG Speedfit Team are looking forward to the
opportunities and challenges ahead.

Kaleidoscope is in excess of 50 different house
types, which cover a wide range of occupancy
from penthouses to social housing, 1 & 2 bedroom
apartments, as well as glass walled living areas - all
factors which significantly influence the performance of
an underfloor heating system. The number of variables
to be considered meant PG Bones required detailed
and accurate designs to be produced and that is exactly
where JG Speedfit’s expertise was most valuable.

success of the Kaleidoscope Project. While there
was inevitably some repetition involved, there were
always slight eccentricities within each property, which

After encountering a difficult start of the 2014
Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship
and overcoming a big accident, falling off the bike
at over 100 mph, our JG Speedfit sponsored
bike racer Joe Burns is back on track and more
determined than ever before.

Joe has already showed good speed, finishing
5th at the Thruxton Round of the competition
beginning of August and with his latest results
he has lifted his Championship ranking, currently
standing among the top 10 racers.
We are wishing Joe best of luck in the forthcoming
races and in the meantime here are some facts on
his Kawasaki ZX10R bike:
•Once stripped of the road running items, such as lights etc., the machine weighs 175Kg.
•Top speed when geared for a fast racetrack
is 200 mph.
•The tyres last just one race, approx. 20 minutes.
•Four sets of tyres are used per race weekend.
•The brakes are uprated with race discs, calipers and brake pads.
•The front forks use special race internals, but standard external tubes.
•The rear suspension uses race shock absorber and springs.

Ever since our founder Mr John Guest introduced
the now famous ‘Speedfit’ tube connector to the
UK market in the 1970s, numerous industries were
bound to be changed forever. The new product was
able to reduce assembly times to a few seconds with
an instant tube-coupling system, which needed no
tools for putting together or disconnecting.
Q) CAN SPEEDFIT PIPE AND FITTINGS BE
BURIED IN A SOLID WALL OR FLOOR?
A) Burying pipework directly in screed for use in underfloor
heating circuits is permitted by the Water Regulations only
where the pipe forms part of the structure. JG Speedfit
pipe in any other application as well as JG Speedfit fittings
must never be directly buried. JG Speedfit pipe can be
buried in screed provided it is laid in a conduit and in a
manner that will allow the pipework to be removed at
a later date if damaged. JG Speedfit supply appropriate
conduit pipe for this purpose. Connection to suitable
fittings at both ends is recommended, so if required it
can be disconnected and then pulled out and replaced.
The
conduit pipe is supplied with an outside diameter of
24mm for use with 15mm pipe and an outside diameter
of 30mm for use with 22mm pipe. Both sizes are available
in lengths of 25 metres or 50 metres. Where it is deemed
necessary to install fittings in a solid wall or floor, they
should be installed in an access box with a removable lid.
The Water Regulations state that pipe or fittings for hot
or cold water services laid in any solid wall or floor must
be removable.
Q) DO I NEED TO PROTECT A SPEEDFIT
SYSTEM WHEN SOLDERING?
A) Yes, keep flame or soldering tools away from JG Speedfit
Products. There is a huge amount of heat generated when
soldering and high pipe surface temperatures as well as
huge internal air temperature can be generated during
this process almost instantaneously. Also do not allow flux
or flux runs to come into contact with JG Speedfit fittings,
as the chemicals used to clean the copper are aggressive
and become active during the process. Follow the safety
instructions when using flux, especially when there are
concerns with preventing you from breathing in the fumes.
The minimum distance to make a solder connection on
copper pipe inserted into a JG Speedfit fitting is 450mm.
Q) I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE O-RINGS
USED IN SPEEDFIT FITTINGS WILL NOT LAST
LONG, IS THIS TRUE?
A) O-rings are an engineering seal and therefore have
many uses and are made from many different materials
depending on the requirements. Some are used with
water, some with fuel, others have high temperature with
a long life expectancy. We trust the service longevity of
our O-rings as they are used in many high performing
components such as fuel injection, automotive braking
systems, Aircraft and Naval solutions to name a few. JG
Speedfit use an O-ring made from (EPDM) ETHYLENE
PROPYLENE DIEN MONOMER, which is the same
material used in Aircraft and Submarine O-rings - not the
cheapest material, however it has excellent properties
and a long life expectancy. Although JG Speedfit
guarantees these products for 25 years, a much longer
life is actually expected.

Speedfit push-fit fitting used in everyday plumbing
practices shares the same concept incorporated in our
JG fittings serving the needs of industries such as drinks

delivering petrol to the fuel rail and injectors of
every Ford 1.6L or 2.0L engine. Aston Martin also
uses fittings in several components, from the timing
belt cover of the Lagonda V8 through to the gearbox
and rear differential. Other automotive brands that
incorporate John Guest push-fit technology are
Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW, Fiat, Volvo
and Alfa Romeo to name a few.

patients in the UK and beyond by
helping Cancer Research UK create
a new world leading biomedical
research centre of global importance
and impact - the Francis Crick
Institute. Located in the heart of
London, the Institute will house 1,500
worldleading scientists from a range
of disciplines, working together under
one roof to tackle global health
problems. The establishment will
focus on all the major diseases that
affect humankind including cancer,
diabetes, cardiovascular diseases,
neurodegenerative diseases such
as dementia and infectious diseases
such as HIV/AIDS,TB and malaria.
The emphasis will be on collaborative
approaches to unravelling the
interacting networks of genes,
molecules
and
environment
underpinning living processes in
order to tackle the root causes
of these diseases. The scale of the
project will enable a unique and
powerful approach to beating cancer
and saving lives not only in the UK
but also internationally.
Expected to be fully completed
in May 2016, the Francis Crick
Institute will certainly set new highs
in biomedical research and we are

Based on extensive customer feedback and in view of
simplifying the concept of UFH installations, the updated
JG Manifold is pre-assembled and more compact. The
product incorporates the fill & drain and Auto Air vent
within its rails, which will reduce the number of joints
required.
The second imporvement to our JG UFH product

At JG Speedfit we have always considered the industry
as a source of inspiration and at the same time a
field where we could showcase our engineering
excellence by setting the standard with our innovative
developments - Underfloor Heating is no exception
to that rule.
Since 2003, when we introduced our first JG Speedfit
UFH concept to the UK market, demand has risen
exponentially. This is due to many factors, but most sign
is the result of our continuous investment in the pre
and after sales support we provide our customers with.
Free CAD design service is just one of the six elements
within our JG Speedfit Support package, but it plays
an important role as it provides installers with reliable,
accurate and timely pipe layout design and materials’
pricing for any sort of UFH project.
Based in Chippenham, our specialist CAD team has
worked on an endless range of projects including
domestic housing developments, churches, pubs,
nursing homes and shopping centres. The team has
even provided invaluable expertise for UFH installations
heating a lot more exotic venues such as a football
stadium, chicken sheds in South Africa, hotels in the Far
East and several celebrity properties including one or
two England footballers.
On receipt of drawings from a customer the CAD
team decides on which JG UFH system would be most
suitable and provides a detailed costing of materials
together with technical data. They also liaise with our
sales and technical support teams to ensure customers
are getting the right system for their lifestyle. The initial
calculations are done using JG Speedfit’s own in-house
software, which complies with all the relevant building
regulations and European standards. Once the price
has been agreed, the next stage would be to produce a
unique and detailed CAD drawing showing where and
how to lay all the pipes in the floor, supported by all the
technical information required.
Then, if required, one of JG Speedfit’s technical support
engineers would be on hand to provide installation
advice and, in some cases, to give on-site training to
new JG Speedfit users, making sure they get the best
out of their purchase.
