We are delighted to announce the winner of 2014’s JG
Layflat® pipe competition - ‘Every Metre Counts’.
The brand new Ford Transit Connect Van went to
Tom Claridge from TD Claridge Plumbing & Heating,
Kent, who purchased the winning JG Layflat® coil from
Maidstone Plumbing Centre, Kent.
Tom collected his Ford Transit Connect from our
Head Office and enjoyed a factory tour where he was
impressed to see the production of fittings he uses on
a daily basis.

knowledge of working methods and products.
Lasting no more than an hour and using a combination
of pre-recorded video modules, live presentations and

COMFORT WITH JG AURA
NORTH LODGE, NORTH RD, CARDIFF
THE PROJECT
Built by GPC Services, the recently constructed
North Lodge house is well located in the heart of the
picturesque Welsh Capital, right next to the colossal
site of the gorgeous Cardiff Castle. The house has a
total quadrature of 121.09m2 and comprises of a
master bedroom, kitchen, lounge, hall and a utility room.
With a view to being as energy efficient as possible, the
ultimate solution for heat distribution throughout the
house was decided to be underfloor heating. The UFH
concept alone offers great system control, concentrates
warmth where needed for comfort and efficiency, and
allows for further energy bill cuts. Naturally, to boost
the energy-saving advantages of such a system an
efficient heating controls technology was also required.

team helped him immensely during all stages of the
project as it was the first time he had installed a UFH
system. He was also impressed with how easy it was to
uncoil and handle the JG Layflat® pipe, describing it as
“a wonderful product saving time and hassle”.
For the added benefit of controlling the system through
a smart device the JG Hub was installed providing an
internet enabled system. The only thing left to do was
to download the JG Aura App on the homeowner’s
smart phone and tablet, which allows for swift system
control from anywhere and at any time of the day.
JG AURA HEATING CONTROLS
Efficient system control throughout the North Lodge
house is ensured by JG Aura - the new heating controls
range by JG Speedfit.
As Gavin pointed out, having the JG Hub installed and
the JG Aura App downloaded means it is less expensive
and more convenient than having to purchase a
dedicated controller at an unreasonable price.
The system provides the capability of controlling
multiple zones, enabling the homeowner to set heating
time and temperature within each individual room
resulting in considerable energy savings. This is enabled
by JG Aura’s capability to simultaneously manage
Underfloor Heating circuits, hot water supply and
individual radiators.

The set up of the JG Aura network at the North Lodge
house took minutes, as the JG Coordinator scanned
and paired most components instantaneously. Both
of the large UFH manifolds downstairs as well as the
upstairs radiator circuits were paired in minutes.

JG SPEEDFIT’S INVOLVEMENT
JG UNDERFLOOR
Supplied by JG Speedfit, the UFH system for the
North Lodge house was installed with the JG staple
technology.
The staple system is among the several alternatives JG
Speedfit offers for solid floor installations. It is suitable
where large areas need to be covered and is ideal for
rooms with an irregular shape. Using the screed as a
heat diffuser, the pipe was secured with staples to rigid
insulation panels placed over the concrete subfloor.
The system installer, Gavin Thomas of GT Heating,
was delighted with the after-sales support JG Speedfit
provided, commenting that the CAD drawings he

2014 proved to be a very successful year for our
JG Layflat® pipe competition when a lucky installer
won a brand new Ford Transit Connect Van.
We are excited to announce that you will once
again have the chance to win big with JG Layflat®.
Almost three years after the official market launch of
our JG Layflat® pipe, installers are still amazed at how
ultra flexible the product is. It simply lays flat and stays
flat when removed from the coil, allowing greater
control and ease of movement, which makes it possible
for a single person to meander and route the pipe as
they wish. This is the reason why our promotion this
year will yet again see the JG Layflat® pipe at its heart.
The lucky winner of the bike will be announced
at the beginning of October 2015. However in
June there will be additional prize draw giving
away a weekend break for two to attend the BSB
race event - taking place in Assen, Holland, 1920 September 2015. The package will include
flights, hotel accommodation and VIP treatment.

SOME OF THE TOP QUESTIONS WE RECEIVED ON OUR TECHNICAL HELPLINE...
Q) WHAT IS A 4 IN 1 THERMOSTAT?
A) In order to make life easier for both stockists and
installers, we came up with a thermostat that can be
used as a Programmable Room Thermostat, A Digital
(Temperature only) Thermostat or a Hot Water timer. This
makes the JG Aura range easier to stock and install.
Not only this, but the same Thermostats can be setup
as individual units or as groups. When grouped, one
thermostat is used as a convenient central Group Controller.
Q) WHY A ZIGBEE WIRELESS NETWORK
SYSTEM AND WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
A) In traditional 868MHz wireless systems the signal
from the thermostat travels directly to the wiring centre.
This means that the distance between the thermostat
and the receiver and the line-of-sight (i.e. obstacles, walls)
can affect reception.
The Zigbee Wireless Network is a sophisticated protocol,
which enables each powered component to act as a
repeater (picking up signals from other components and
rebroadcasting them) as well as a transmitter. Because of
this there will be many signal paths from any thermostat
to the receiver or wiring centre. The more components that
are in a system, the more paths there are to the receiver
- “A Network of Paths”.
Another advantage of using the Zigbee protocol is that
it enables a much easier set up. In traditional wireless
systems, all of the individual components need pairing or
binding together. In large systems this can be a complicated
and time-consuming business. JG Aura removes the need
for the installer to spend long hours doing this by building
in Auto Pairing.
Q) WHAT IS AUTO PAIRING?
When a Wiring Centre controlled system is first turned
on, the wiring centres (up to 8) will start to look for an
open Coordinator to pair with. A 5 second press on the
Coordinator button puts it into pairing mode, then after
a short pairing time is allowed (typically 10 seconds), the
wiring centres power light will stop flashing to indicate that
it has joined the network. Wiring centres are assigned a
number I.D. when they join the network (1-8). The wiring
centre I.D. is revealed by a short press of the white network
button on the front panel. Setup of the thermostats is
simple, requiring the user to specify the thermostat type,
the wiring centre I.D., grouping and heating zone number.
Q) IF I LOSE POWER WILL I NEED TO
SET UP THE NETWORK AGAIN?
A) No, the system will retain its settings
and programmes.

Auto set up goes even further, when the Date & Time
are entered into the first thermostat, the Coordinator
synchronizes all other thermostats automatically.
The addition of a JG Hub provides the benefit of
online App control and future software updates for
the JG Aura System.
The Coordinator should be left on permanently to
keep the system synchronised and operational.
Q) DO I NEED MORE THAN 1 COORDINATOR
IF I HAVE A MIXED RADIATOR/UFH SYSTEM?
A) No, just the 1 Coordinator.
Q) WILL A SECOND COORDINATOR NEARBY
CAUSE PROBLEMS?
A) No, when a system is being set up initially
then the Coordinator is placed in the pairing
mode (by pressing the button for 5
seconds). Following the pairing process
the Coordinator is taken out of pairing
mode (by again pressing the button
for 5 seconds) and the system
information is locked in.
A) Auto pairing is achieved by a Coordinator, a component
used as part of every JG Aura wireless installation.

Responsible for the analysis of all the company’s new products,
the John Guest Test Lab is run by a team of eight specialists.
Unlike most engineers, they spend the majority of their time
breaking the finished components. This is where they learn
about the strengths and weaknesses of the fittings and where
improvements can be made.
There are many tests available which are based on variations
of temperature, force, pressure, time and chemical exposure
– factors all serving to accelerate failure. It is only when tested
parts fail that the Engineering team begins to understand how
the new products can be improved.

The team’s involvement in projects starts from almost the
beginning and continues until long after the fittings are being
manufactured.The initial testing is on development prototypes
where tests are performed to prove design concepts.
Different types of analysis is used and it is essential that tests
are robust and reliable. These originate from various sources,
such as international standards, customer specifications and
John Guest’s own test criteria. The various requirements are
then interpreted into internal analysis systems to provide
scientific data.

SOUTH WEST & MIDLANDS
Thermal cycling is among the main product tests performed
at the John Guest Test Lab where the temperature is changed
from hot to cold over a set period of time, while the process
itself could last up to nine months. Pressure cycling is another
procedure used to evaluate products’ quality, which in its
essence is increasing the pressure up to 26 bar and then
releasing it – a cycle repeated over 10,000 times. As well as
heat and pressure the fittings are also exposed to chemical
compatibility testing to illustrate how resistant they could be
to different chemical environments over time.
We invest heavily in our Test Lab’s arsenal of tools, with a
fume cabinet and an elevated burst & hydrostatic tester
being the recent additions to our Research
& Development assets. These will broaden
the analysis that our experienced team can
perform and will help develop new tests that
meet the requirements of our new product
ranges and the ever-changing industry.
