Joke of the Month
A man rushed into a hospital and asked a
nurse for a cure for hiccups. Grabbing a
cup of water the nurse quickly splashed
it into the man’s face. “What did you do
that for?” screamed the man. “You don’t
have the hiccups now, do you?” said the
nurse. “No,” replied the man. “My wife
out in the car has them.”

Peeking into Springtime
As we wrap up February and head into March our focus is on Safety and Service.
Heavy Crude Hauling was one of eight business units out of twenty-eight to qualify for
the Mullen Group Grand Prize Safety Award (GPSA). The GPSA process consists of
reviewing specific areas of our Health, Safety and Environment Program including
leadership commitment, personnel selection, certification, training, risk management,
regulatory compliance, environmental code of practice and continuous improvement.
The winner will be announced at the 2013 Grand Prize Safety Awards Evening on
Thursday, February 27, 2014 in Okotoks.
March 20th will start us out on the spring season, longer days and road bans. Everyone
needs to ensure that they are aware of the road bans and the road use agreements we
have in place for the fields that we haul. If you need help on this please talk to your
Field Supervisor and Dispatch. March will also bring on the next round of Safety
Meetings in all the areas that we serve. Stay tuned for the dates and times.

March as well is when the time changes…..”Daylight Savings Time” (DST) comes into
effect on Sunday, March 9th. Remember to turn your clock ahead one hour to take
advantage of the longer days. Most of Saskatchewan does not follow DST which
means that for the spring and summer months Alberta and Saskatchewan will be on the
same time. This makes it a little easier for attending safety and operational meetings.
On Wednesday, March 19th, 2014 we will recognize our people and celebrate Individual
and team contributions of service and safety at our 8th Annual Awards & Recognition
Evening at the Lloydminster Golf and Curling Centre and on Thursday, March 20th,
2014 at the Bonnyville Neighborhood Inn for our Bonnyville team. We encourage all
our employees and sub-contractors to join us for supper and ceremony as we share our
utmost appreciation to our people for their contribution to Heavy Crude Hauling.

Feature of the month
Terry Wentzell has been with Heavy Crude since December, 2010. Terry started in the wash
bay and has moved into the internal bay taking care of the steaming and internal wash jobs on
our tanks. Terry is always the first one at work ready to get busy and can always be counted
on to get the job done. On Terry’s days off he likes to spend time with his family, watching
movies and taking his stepson to Tae Kwon Do practice.
Proactive Defensive Driver Improvement (PDDI)/ Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC)
Heavy Crude strongly recommends driver training for our sub contractors and their drivers. Our aim is to reduce the risk of collision
by anticipating dangerous situations despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others. Defensive driving can be achieved through
adherence to a variety of general rules as well as the practice of specific driving techniques. These courses are for experienced drivers
who want to be smart and skilled on the roads. You will learn strategies to be a proactive driver including learning about the causes
and consequences of unsafe driving practices.
Driver Improvement Courses also provides information on risk management, vehicle and environmental hazards, as well as strategies
to read the driving environment giving you the knowledge to be a proactive driver and avoid collisions.
PDDI can be conducted online at www.ama.ab.ca/driver-education/fleet-safety-online-courses and takes approximately three hours.
There is an online fee for this course. PDIC is offered internally by Heavy Crude.
Keep up all the great
work Terry!
A View From Fort Kent
As discussed at our January Safety Meeting, we filled our truck schedule and cleaned up the
field. We are now experiencing a smaller load count resulting in some shorter load lists for
the day. This is good for the short term as it gives everyone time to concentrate on the task
at hand, focus on hazard assessments and hazard ID reporting. Now we have ample
opportunity to look at ourselves and the area where we work from a safety point of view.
We must challenge ourselves to recognize, assess and reduce any hazards that may be out
there. Let’s exercise procedures that we discuss at our safety meetings.
Our Bonnyville A&R Banquet will be held this year on March 20, 2014 at the Neighborhood
Inn in the Alberta Room. This year’s A&R Banquet will coincide with our scheduled safety
meeting. Heavy Crude is inviting our sub contractors and one guest to our A&R Banquet,
details to follow as we get closer to the date.
As always, we thank all who continue to help make HCH a success!

Following Procedures
There have been a large number of haulers failing to follow procedures with loading and unloading, observing PPE requirements and
following rules of the road. This has to stop. Written procedures are found in the Red Binder which are in every truck that works for
Heavy Crude. These procedures need to be reviewed and followed. There will be serious consequences for the people who fail to
follow them.

Daily Work Summaries & Tickets – Changing out Equipment
If you need to change out a trailer during your shift for mechanical reasons, close off the Daily
Work Summary (DWS) from the start of the shift and start a new DWS. A new DWS must be
completed including the pre inspection of the different equipment you have behind you now. Heavy
Crude does compensate for approved travel time if a trailer needs to be brought to the Lloyd Shop.
When completing a ticket for travel time to switch out a trailer, please make out a separate ticket
to Heavy Crude showing times traveled and the reason for the switch out. Do not indicate times
for these switch outs on customer load tickets.

News From Maintenance
As we move along into 2014 we have run into a recurring issue, re-torqueing wheel nuts. If
you are pulling a trailer that has a plastic bag zip tied to the glad hand it has had tire work
done to it and will require a re-torque after 100 km. This can be done at our shop, by any of
the field supervisors or (one of the many tire shops in the area as a last resort). Remove the
paper work from the sealed bag and have the person doing the re-torque sign off that it has
been done and send the copy in with your tickets. Losing a set of tires can be deadly. Don’t
forget to check for this paper work when doing your pre-trip inspection.

Let’s all work together to keep everything clean, nobody likes oil on anything. Please do not leave any garbage on lease sites,
take it with you. We are having issues with plugs and caps not getting put back in and ears not getting closed. We as fluid
haulers, must put plugs and caps back on and lock both ears. If this procedure is not followed and there is a spill, the clean up
cost would be charged to the truck that was at location last or divided among the trucks working in the area.
Spring is around the corner. As the weather warms up the roads will get very icy, please drive to conditions. Wear required
PPE at all times. Ensure all information is complete on load tickets including temperature and gauge board readings.
Husky Haulers: “No Load” tickets: In addition to the time at location, please
document the designated Ryder Program pick up time.. Having the booked
Ryder time documented will help in getting no load tickets approved for pay.
Husky Water Transfer Sites: As a rule , oil will be booked out of these
locations, unless there is an issue at the site. Please haul what is booked.
Reminder - all Husky tickets must have the run number indicated on the ticket,
this enables field supervisors to get tickets to the appropriate people for approval.
