When students usually here the month October, most of them will come up with Halloween month. Did you know that bullying is so serious that they have a month dedicated to preventing it? Last month was National Bullying Prevention month. Bullying is a real problem in our society especially for our youth. Some may believe that bullying is only just when someone gets picked on frequently. Unfortunately that is true, but there are six main forms of bullying. Physical, Verbal, Indirect, Social Alienation, Intimidation, and finally cyber bullying. Researchers estimate that 20 to 30 percent of school-age children are involved in some type of form. Effects of bullying can be both physical and emotionally brutal. Students that are victims of bullying may completely destroy their academic life, that means their grades will drop. And rather them paying attention to their teacher, their minds are on what they did wrong and planning to avoid the bully. If bullying continues and becomes even more severe, then students may even be too scared to come to school. And if the students don’t show up to school then the teachers loose money. So the teachers are also affected in bullying. Victims of bullying begin to create low-self esteem and depression that follows them to their adulthood. Victims are not the only ones that are affected “It takes two to tango”. Bullies are as well affected into their adulthood; they may have difficulties forming positive relationships, there more likely to use drugs or alcohol, and to be abusive to their spouses. Other studies say that also later in life, bullies have criminal activities. Warning Signs of Bullying -Increased Passivity -Frequent Crying -Recurrent complaints of Physical symptoms -Unexplained Bruises -Sudden Drop of Grades -Not Wanting to go to school -Significant changes in school -Sudden Change in the way your child talks or frequent bad attitude Gunderson High is starting up an Anti-Bullying week that has been spreading throughout the globe on the week of November 20th. Gunderson and with the help from Mrs. Anavari a student counselor and a spanish teacher will motivate are students to sign a pledge of no bullying. So Grizzlies, my article message is that bullying is NOT OK! It threatens other student physically and emotionally safety during school and can abundantly impact their potential to learn. The most efficient way to address bullying in any type is to stop it before it can even start. To finish my article I advise us students whenever we notice any bullying activity and you feel the victim is clearly uncomfortable, please step in or contact a school advisor. Grizzly P.R.I.D.E. GUNDERSON HIGH SCHOOL/ NEWS & FEATURES My Gunderson Idol Experience Sydney Reed| Junior| Staff Writer I’ve always been the one to hold back and be afraid, believe it or not. All my friends look at me as the crazy and outgoing Sydney, never the serious Sydney. So, when I told Coach Drake that I wanted to try out for this year’s Gunderson Idol, He looked at me as if I was talking in a foreign language, as well as everyone else, but that didn’t stop me. When I actually had the guts to try out, I forgot the lyrics! The next day, I was so nervous and anxious to find out if I made the top 20. Then 4th period came, and I got a paper saying that I made it. HUGE weight lifted off my chest. Eventually, I made it to the Top 5 joined by Sonia Hills, Mariam Miller, Obah Ali, and Anna Peppas. Even making it to the top 5, I felt like a winner. After performing for the last time, I felt like I could do anything, But waiting to see if I won was one of the worst feelings i’ve ever had. I felt so sick to my stomach, that I didn’t even want to go to school, but thank god I did because I soon found out that I won. I wanna thank everyone who believed in me, because I didn’t at first. This experience has taught me one thing, and that one thing is that you can do ANYTHING you put your heart into. http://www.theworldburns.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/sing.gif Student Work Photography Club Ray Sanchez| Senior| Staff Writers Fabian Rosales| Adrian Morales| Senior| Staff Writers "To enjoy Life you must first Live the Life" -X Interview with Ms. Cheung about Photography Club. 1. Ms. Cheung, What is your club all about? “Photography club is a club that promotes photography in the community and especially at Gunderson we want to show the spirit of Gunderson through our pictures.” Photo Credit: Adrian Morales 2. Why should students join this club? “This year we are going to try to teach students some photoshop skills, and just know to appreciate photography.” 3. Why did you decide to teach this club? “I love photography and would love nothing more to share with others. It’s one of the most undervalued professions in this world because we are so used to seeing it everywhere. GUNDERSON HIGH SCHOOL/ NEWS & FEATURES Old School vs. New School Karla Villa| Senior| Staff Writer As some of you may remember, around this time last year, the Girl’s basketball team here on campus held a dance called the Old School Vs. New School dance. Last year the dance was a success with a wide variety of music, people, and of course, the food. Some of you may find the thought of a dance with that wide of an age group to be, well, not as fun as a regular dance, but actually, last year it was a blast. The dance is put on by the Girls basketball team instead of the leadership class, and head varsity coach, John Drake, is the man behind the magic. The whole concept behind this dance is to take old school music that has a dance to it, such as the cupid shuffle, and newer songs with dances to them such as the soulja boy, the cat daddy, the stanky leg, and most recent the gas pedal, and play them at the dance. When the intro to a song with a well known dance to it comes on, you know you can’t help but to yell ‘’ayeeeee!’’ and start dancing along to it. It’s not a sadies, or a winter ball where you dress up and come with a date, its more of a family event. There’s music, dancing, and free food, all for the very reasonable price of 10$. All profits go to the girl’s basketball team. It’s a fun time, with good music and great people, and tons of memories were made last year, and we’re hoping to make it happen again this year on a larger scale. So come out, bring a friend or two, you wont regret it. If anything, there’s free food, so you cant lose. ASB Interviews Nicole Athans| Mariam Abdo| Senior| Staff Writers Doug Gutierrez (ASB PRESIDENT) I wanted to be ASB President because I realized I could make more of an impact if I was in a position that held power. My plan is to offer something more for our school. We pride ourselves on being "diverse", but nothing had to be done to obtain that title. I'm working so that the Gunderson body can have a sense of accomplishment and be truly proud. Bekah Ledwith (ASB VP) I decided to run for an ASB position my sophomore year, after working closely with that years current officers and directors. After serving as ASB Rally Director, I realized that I wanted to become more deeply involved with Gunderson life. I feel extremely connected to this school, and strive to do everything in my power to strengthen the Gunderson community. The people at Gunderson are more than my teachers and peers, they are my family. As ASB Vice President, I know that there are many things at Gunderson that are simply beyond my power to affect. My main goal is to change the atmosphere at Gunderson; moreover, improve the atmosphere. I want Gunderson to go crazy with spirit and I want clubs and activities to inspire and motivate. Gunderson is such a wonderful school, and I am honored to be in a position to leave a lasting impact. Camellia Oskuie (ASB Secretary) I want to be an officer because, I knew I’d be able to fill the position of being an ASB secretary. I take good notes, I’m organized, I set a good example to the class and school. I love helping others and having people coming to me for advice. My freshmen year, the ASB secretary was Lorita and I really looked up to her and she also got accepted to college, I want to go too, so she was someone I really idolized. My plans for this year is to get people more spirited and energized on spirit days. Which I’m sure the other ASB officers can agree with, we’ll always be dressed up to show people it’s fun to be silly on spirit days and go all out. Also getting involved in things like lunch time activities, clubs, and sports. Gunderson, does have so much pride and it increases more every year, it makes me really happy to be a part of it. Matt Perry (ASB Treasurer) I decided to run for ASB Treasurer for a few reasons, one because I really love Gunderson's Leadership class, two because nobody else was running for this position and I figured "why not me?,” and three because I was great friends with everybody else running for the other positions, contested or not. I'm definitely excited for the year to come, all of the classes seem to want to work, and Doug has definitely got some great ideas to make his second year as ASB President a great one for the whole school. GUNDERSON HIGH SCHOOL/ NEWS & FEATURES Homecoming 2012 Overview Karla Villa| Senior| Staff Writer As most of us remember, about a month ago, four to five weeks worth of workdays for leadership students, resulted in amazing homecoming week. The biggest sigh of relief the Sunday it was all over, was probably exhaled by leadership teacher, Mr. Iverson. But what most of campus students aren’t aware of is that the decorations, floats, powder- puff teams, a group of about 120 students that are part of leadership showed up to school an hour earlier 3 times a week, and came in to 6 hour workdays Saturdays, not to mention staying after school to help out. This past Homecoming is said around campus to be one of the best ones we’ve had. Everyone was crazy spirited throughout the week, and specially on the class color friday, there was nothing but brown, yellow, pink, orange, and teal everywhere you looked. Even some of the teachers got into the spirit of it and rocked the colors of their favorite class. Their was a variety of music at the Homecoming dance. The skits were incredibly thought out and had good story lines. Not to mention all the floats were a blast to both parade and watch from the stands. Last but definitely not one of the least the powder-puff games were some of the most competitive I’ve ever played in and each class definitely came close. It was a homecoming to remember and I, as a senior, look forward to coming back next year and watching the current underclassmen take it up even a step further. It was a week to remember, and it just goes to show that when the entire school is involved, and active spirit weeks are more fun. You only get so many spirit weeks and dances in high school, might as well make them memorable. Photo Credit: Ms. Cheung Senior Spirit! Alan Pham| Senior| Staff Writer Our senior class was so spirited at the homecoming rally. A great majority of us were dressed in our class colors and screamed our class chants at the top of our lungs. When I looked up at our section at the rally, all I saw was teal and black. Almost every senior was in their class colors. I was happy I saw so many seniors so spirited because it’s our last year and it’s the last time we can act silly, have fun, and be bosses in high school! Seniors who didn’t dress up are really missing out. It’s time to leave your awkward quiet shell and try something different. And us seniors can help you with that! Go to the Senior class meetings Tuesdays at lunch in Ms. Weathers classroom and see what exciting things you can do this year for your senior year! Also, meet and talk to people you’ve never talked to before! There are going to be more rallies this year and I encourage and want every senior and everyone from every class to dress up, cheer, and have fun; Especially for seniors. It’s your last year, have some spirit and have some pride for your class. After this year there will be no more high school rally and chants, so try something new! You are going to regret it later on if you don’t act upon it right now. So remember be spirited! Dress up! Have fun! Make your last year worth while! My Senior Year Experience Thus Far... Alan Pham| Senior| Staff Writer Wow, can you Seniors believe it? Our first three years have passed and we’re down to our last year! Some of us can’t wait until we get out of high school, but others, such as myself, don’t want to leave high school! I personally, was never really the type of person to participate in school events, such as leadership, dances, rallies. But, this year something changed. Something made me want to do something for my school, and for my Senior class. So, I decided to help out with this year’s Homecoming. At first when some people asked me to participate, I didn’t want to. Then when some of my friends convinced me, I gave in. Honestly it turned out amazing. I had a great time being in the Homecoming skit, participating and dressing up for the rally, and having so much spirit for the senior class. I feel different now, I feel more involved. Everyone that was in the skit means something to me now. I feel closer to them, we’re like one big family. That line may be overused but there is no other way to explain it. This is my last year and so far I'm heading towards the right path. I joined leadership, made new friends, and have become more of an open person. I want to create memories with the senior class; I want to remember what I did my senior year a couple years from now when my college friends ask me what I miss about high school. I want this year to be the best year I ever had in high school. Big props to my friend Ryan Tran, Senior Class President, who got all the Seniors pumped up and making my senior year amazing, and also leading us to homecoming victory. Gaurav Gupta and Payal Ghandi to convince me to participate in the skit; and Ms. Weathers for being an awesome advisor for our senior class! She put in so much time and effort to help us. And last but not least I’d like to thank everyone in the Senior class who was a part of Homecoming! Lets end this year the right way, the fun way, the good way, the amazing way, and the Seniors’ way! Seniors! Class of 13! Grizzly P.R.I.D.E. OP-ED livepage.apple.com 6 NOVEMBER 20, 2012 THE NEWSPAPER OF HENRY T. GUNDERSON HIGH SCHOOL/ NEWS & FEATURES Bullying: Nobody Deserves It Taylor Rocklage|Junior|Staff Writer Nobody deserves to be bullied, nobody, plain and simple. A tragic example would be Amanda Todd. She made a lot of mistakes in her life, but she did not deserve to get made fun of to the point where she had to move schools multiple times, get beaten up and left in a ditch, hazed on the internet, and driven to the point of suicide. All those people that made fun of her had no idea what was going on in her life, how she felt about the decisions she made, or what her background was. If they had taken the time to get to know her and understand where she was coming from, Amanda Todd could still be alive today. So before you or a friend may say a few hurtful words to someone or worse, think about their situation. Do you really know the whole story? Do you have the right to judge? Your words or actions towards someone could severely affect their life. http://media-dis-n-dat.blogspot.com/2010/12/sociable-kidz-program-aims-tohelp-kids.html How To Stay Safe Online Kaitlyn Petersen| Senior| Staff Writer There are a lot of creepy people in this world. If a stranger tried talking to you on the street you would probably ignore them. How is it any different than online? How can you be sure that people are who they say they are? The most important thing that anyone can do is to keep themselves safe online. It’s not a bad thing to meet new people over the internet but just be safe about what you say and do. Here are five tips that can help keep you safe when you’re on a social media site. 1. Protect/Lock your account 2. Don’t post personal photos of family or of places that will give away where you live 3. Don’t say what city you live in, only the state, or don’t say at all 4. Don’t give out your number, address, or any other ways of communication to people 5. Watch what you say online, it might come back to hurt you! Many of us have touch screen phones, laptops, and other things, but do we really understand the complexity behind the technology? Mr. Davis had mentioned to me this concept about the use of technology. Our school is a technology magnet. We have had opportunities to use technology, but many of us do not comprehend aside the basics. Photo Credit: Carley Robinson Discussion with Mr. Davis “Some kids today know technology, some don’t. I have students that not only don’t know it, but are afraid of it. They are afraid of it because they don’t know how to use it. Anything that you don’t know how to do, it’s intimidating. It’s easier to say that I don’t want to do it.” have it. It fulfilled that part of it, but it never really got to the point where it was integrated into the curriculum.” Q: Do you think that there is a better way for the students to work aside from the one-on-one program? A: “I honestly like the carts better. Even if I don’t get to use them everyday, it’ll just be these three day chunks here and there, but at least I can guarantee that every kid is going to have them. Then we can all be doing the same thing, and I like that.” Q: Based on experience with both programs, which do you think has better results? A: “I don’t know what the answer is. Some schools are thinking about doing a “bring your own device” - I tried that last year, and the hard part http://spiltinc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/technology2.jpg about everything is Q : Do you t h i n k i t was implementing it, and structuring beneficial for us to have the laptops in our previous it. Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the U.S. and Canada. It’s been a tradition since the year of 1863. W hen people think of Thanksgiving, they think of eating turkey, ham, mash potatoes with gravy, pie, and much more. But, Thanksgiving isn’t only about eating so much you burst. Thanksgiving is a perfect time to pause for a moment and remember to give thanks. It’s a time to be grateful for your health, family, friends, shelter, and having food on the table, because, unfortunately their are many families who don’t have food on their table, here are a few places to volunteer and donation centers to help those in need. What about the people you spend it with? Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that you have once a year, where you can spend time with the people you love; sharing funny stories and experiences, loving their company and of course the food! But this Thanksgiving, along with many others, recognize the people whom you share it with, and thank them for all that they've done for you. Not just for making the food but for being a great presence in your life. http://www.aldiko.com/blog/happy-thanksgiving Vegetarians During Thanksgiving Carley Robinson| Senior| Staff Writer Being a vegetarian has its difficult moments. I feel like it can be the most difficult during Thanksgiving. It is that time of the year when there is food everywhere, and a lot of it includes meat or meat flavorings. There is a very diverse range of different dishes full of delicious food and being a vegetarian can minimize the variety of food that you can eat. Then again, you can create some new dishes that taste just as yummy! You may not have the traditional turkey, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your meal just as much. Throughout my years of being vegetarian, I have experienced many different kinds of foods. On Thanksgiving, my family is very supportive and assists me in making some extra dishes for everyone to try that is vegetarian friendly. This varies from Eggplant Parmesan to Tofu Turkey Sausages.. Even if you may not be vegetarian, there are some recipes out there that might catch your fancy! The Beauty of Autumn Dominique Gonzalez| Junior| Staff Writer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hapgood_Pond_-_Flickr_-_USDAgov.jpg Grizzly P.R.I.D.E. Personally Autumn is one of my favorite seasons, with winter being my first. It’s beautiful to watch the leaves change different colors such as red, orange, and yellow and to see the different weather patterns happen during this season such as rain, wind, and warmth from the sun. I love the fact that it could be very cold, but the sun would still be out shinning. I find it peaceful and very relaxing. Taking walks or going for runs in this weather is probably things I look forward to most when this season arrives. Observing all of the different changes, enjoying the weather, and being able to feel comfortable with the season changes is what I enjoy most. OP-ED 8 NOVEMBER 20, 2012 THE NEWSPAPER OF HENRY T. Not the most practical choices... Kimberly Phan| Senior| Staff Writer In the past couple of months, I've put myself in situations that for the most part wouldn't be considered the highest influence of acceptable approach. I wouldn't rank them as my best choices, I would consider them more along the lines of quick fixes and temporary satisfaction. Bad choices always have the best stories, but even then I can’t stand proud. A heavy amount of incidents filled up more pages of mess up’s. I've gotten myself so caught up in situations that left me in outcomes that I would have never imagined and feeling things I never expected. My priorities took a change of route. I made choices in the spur of the moment just because I knew it was only going to benefit me only in that instant. I've surprised myself, because never once did I ever imagine seeing myself doing the things I've done. I suppose that’s life, I’m on a constant move and I don’t regret anything. I can’t expect to live my life based on an unrealistic life of perfection. I’ll end up where I’m suppose to be, I just gotta keep living. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rKvAmdl5y-8/TC8Kqd056yI/ AAAAAAAAC70/6oR3Fr9en8U/s1600/reality.jpg The Road is Rough Kimberly Phan| Senior| Staff Writer Dealing with life's "kick you while you’re down attitude" is never the most enjoyable, but the feeling of vulnerability is faultless. I have learned that living through what is unavoidable when both my hands are tied and there’s nothing I can do, when I’m so stuck, not just physically, it will either break or toughen me. I will either fall apart or step it up. But falling apart is easier. It requires less tension and less effort. It came easily. Giving in is the easiest, but not the best choice. It’s the tricky dilemma of getting use to conditions being approved, unapproved or unquestioned in its accuracy and adequacy by the self. Now if it’s because you aren’t confident with what you have, then I’m sorry you have issues why? because everyone is beautiful in their own way without plastic surgery. I do understand that many people want to achieve a certain look only because they want to fit into society, but that just means you need someone to tell you what to do and that’s completely wrong. Everyone should appreciate what they have because there’s people out there with worse problems” - Anonymous Make it your life your life.. Millie Tuilefano| Senior| Staff Writer I’ve realized my own successes will be based off of the work I put into my own life. Things aren’t magically created into some form of achievement for us to easily attain. The type of work you want; the relationships you need; the social, mental, and emotional well-being is based on my choices. Opportunities, convenient as they are to be placed in front of me so neatly, would be far too easy. I pave my own path, grovel at no one’s feet but my own, and rejoice at my own successes-not because they were merely handed over, but earned. I want to walk to my own cadence, my very own rhythmic flow through life without being misled by envious jealousy over someone else’s achievements stimulation that’ll leave you happy and fulfilled; the money you require for the lifestyle that is appropriate to you; and any requirement that you may (or may not) have for achievement or service to others. Although many people may think that it's just teens that runaway, thats not always the case. Children, teens, adults, and even parents leave their home either because of the way they are treated or just can't take it anymore. However, there is a higher percentage of teens that runaway than children and adults. There are many ways to try to communicate with someone that wants to leave home: - Hear what they have to say and respect them. - Don't argue with them, that’s going to give them more of a reason to leave. - Don't shut them out when they want to talk to you about a situation they are having, that will make them feel more lonely. - Comfort them, tell that person that you love and care for them and that you don't want to see them leave. If you are someone that thinks about running away and are not comfortable talking to family or friends about what’s going on, call a runaway hotline or visit a website. http://www.1800runaway.org/ Pillow Pets: Best friends for life Isabelle Simmons| Sukii Basma|Senior| Staff Writers Well, its that time of year again. Well, then today is your lucky day! There are many signs to tell if someone is lying here are some signs. -You may notice that the person’s demeanor or voice radically changes. -They often will avoid saying “I” to detach themselves from the lie. - You might notice they have an answer for everything. - A person will fidget and fuss for no reason. Like for example some people will play with their hair or crack their knuckles. - A person proclaims his honesty repetitively for example they might say...“To be honest” or “Honestly, ...” or “I swear”. - A person will avoid eye contact. - They answer too calmly as if their answer was practiced. - In some cases, they can’t help but laugh or smirk. But that mostly applies to a joking lie. - And the obvious one is they change their story . These are just a few of the signs to look for. I just couldn’t help but smile at her childish personality. “Sure, cupcake” Roxy said while smiling. I looked at them and I could already tell we are going to be best friends. The ground beneath my feet was rocky and muddy... Sweet! “Which bed is mine?” I asked “The bottom bunk,” said Roxy without looking up. “Thanks!” I went to my suitcase that just arrived and took out my pajamas. I went to the bathroom and changed. I came out and saw the time on a rocky clock but there were flames coming out of slits of every number on the clock showing the time.... it was 11:11. Make a wish, I thought. The lights were out and Amber and Roxy were already asleep. I hadn’t realized that I was also very tired. As soon as I hit the bed, I fall asleep. ~~~xxxx~~~ “K-K-Kimmy, wake up,” I hear Amber say softly like she was scared.....I opened my eyes to see Amber standing there with a black V-neck shirt “AM or PM?” “PM.” “What!?” I said as I looked at the clock the fire still glowing she was right. “But I went to sleep at 11 last night...” “I know, but you were tired...” “Oh”. “Do you want to take a day of? You can skip school with me!” “Didn’t I just miss school?” “You didn’t exactly miss it. There was a mizter... just like you. He was my best friend but one day he just turned evil. He wanted me to be with him, but I really didn’t want to. He tried drowning me. If Nate hadn’t walked by the river and pushed out of the way, I would’ve died. The mizter’s name was Jason,” Amber said, tears in her eyes. My heart was beating fast with every word she said. Shivers went down my spine. I said a weak, “Oh.” Just then we both looked up to see a boy with black hair and purple eyes at the door. “Nate...” whispered Amber. It started off 4000 years ago in Mexico, yet time has not managed to eradicate the traditions followed during Día de los Muertos. It is celebrated by countless people throughout the globe, religious or not, who want to honor their dead. You can also join the festivities or take a tip from those who celebrate this holiday annually! http://mexicotoday.org/sites/mexicotoday.org/files/ day-of-the-dead.jpg?1338572197 Tip #1: Visit the grave of a deceased loved one. In Mexico, cemeteries have huge parties during Day of the Dead. While you don’t have to bring a whole marching band along, it would be nice to simply say hi to your deceased and feel closer to them for a little while. Tip #2: Build a small altar. An altar could be a shelf in your nightstand dedicated to your loved one. It could be a scrapbook full of pictures or a notebook full of memories you shared with your dead. Be creative, decorative, and colorful! Tip #3: Cook your loved one’s favorite food for dinner one night. This is a great way to show you have that special person on your mind. http://www.mamalisa.com/images/blog/photos/ day_of_the_dead.jpg Tip #4: Wear a marigold in your hair. Marigolds are an important symbol during Día de Los Muertos, and are referred to as “flowers of the dead”. Tip #5: Remember. The purpose of celebrating Day of the Dead is to fondly remember the person who has passed. The best way to honor your dead is to treasure the times you shared together. Fun Fact: Did you know the Aztec’s believed you cried at the loss of a loved one, the deceased’s spirit would slip and fall on your tears? http://blog.sandiego.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DODcatrinas-520x346.jpg Grizzly P.R.I.D.E.
