JACKSON THE AWARDS: THE THRILLER VINTAGES THE FEATURE FILMS’ JURY THE SPECIAL POLICE JURY OPENING FILM THE FEATURES COMPETITION THE ‘NEW BLOOD’ JURY THE ‘NEW BLOOD’ COMPETITION THE FILMS OUT OF COMPETITION CULT FILM TRIBUTE TO A CITY: NEW YORK NOIR LITERATURE - Grand Prix for the Best French ‘Roman Noir’ - Grand Prix for the Best Foreign ‘Roman Noir’ - Prix for a first ‘Roman Noir’ AWARDS AND JURYS IN 2009 PARTNERS OF THE FESTIVAL ORGANIZATION OF THE FESTIVAL 2 TRIBUTE TO JAMES GRAY After William Friedkin in 2009, the Beaune International Thriller Film Festival keeps on honouring great filmmakers. Last year, the first edition of the Beaune International Thriller Film Festival celebrated the city of Paris, its influence and its mythological dimension within the thriller film genre, through a film selection called “Paris Noir”. This year, a real cornerstone to the genre takes over with “New York City Noir”, and the Festival has naturally chosen to pay tribute to one of its most promising ambassadors in recent times, New York-born director, screenwriter and producer: JAMES GRAY Born in New York in 1969, James Gray grew up in Queens and graduated at the University of Southern California School of Cinema and Television in Los Angeles. In 1994, at age 25, he directed his first movie, “Little Odessa”, which received critical acclaim. In the film, Tim Roth portrays a cold-blooded hit man who comes back to his old neighbourhood (Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, home of the Russian community) for a contract, and has to face his father and young brother, interpreted by Edward Furlong, who had banished him. The film earned the Critic Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival and the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. That year, it was also nominated at the Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. In 2000, James Gray wrote and directed his second feature film, “The Yards”, whose cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and James Caan. This film noir was selected in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and marked the beginning of a long collaboration with actor Joaquin Phoenix, who was to be Gray’s hero and alter ego in his next two films. Seven years later, after a long conflict with Miramax about the final cut of “The Yards”, James Gray directed “We Own the Night”, a dark film dealing with the director’s favourite topic, family, and set again in the microcosm of Russian mafia. The film was selected in the official competition of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, became a worldwide success and proved James Gray to be the most promising director in American cinema. Shot in less than forty days and edited without a break, “Two Lovers” caused a stir a year later at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was also selected in the official competition. While the movie used some of the storyline ingredients exploited in his detective trilogy (the Brooklyn Russian Jewish community, family ties), James Gray broke with film noir and teamed for the third time 3 with alter ego Joaquin Phoenix who occupies, opposite Gwyneth Paltrow and Isabella Rossellini, the centre of a realist romantic drama, both melancholic and dark. FILMOGRAPHY 1994 2000 2007 2008 LITTLE ODESSA THE YARDS WE OWN THE NIGHT TWO LOVERS On the occasion of this tribute, the Festival will show the director’s complete works : LITTLE ODESSA (1994) With Tim Roth, Edward Furlong, Moira Kelly, Vanessa Redgrave Joshua Shapira is a cold-blooded professional killer. One day his backer has a “job” for him in Brighton Beach, a neighbourhood of Russian Jews called Little Odessa and where Joshua spent his childhood. THE YARDS (2000) With Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron, James Caan After serving time in prison, Leo just wants to get his life back on track. He takes a job in his uncle’s company but soon discovers the dark sides of the family business… WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007) With Joaquin Phenix, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Robert Duvall As the Russian mafia injects drugs into the vibrant late-1980s New York club scene, up-and-coming club manager Bobby Green must hide his family ties to law enforcement … TWO LOVERS (2008) With Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vanessa Shaw, Isabella Rossellini Following a recent heartbreak, Leonard moves back into his childhood home. While recovering, he meets two women in quick succession: Michelle, a mysterious and beautiful neighbour, and Sandra, the daughter of a close family friend. James Gray will honour the festival with a “Master Class” on Saturday April 10th, at 4 : 00 pm, at the Palais des Congrès, presented by Michel Ciment, creator of the monthly magazine POSITIF. 4 TRIBUTE TO SAMUEL L.JACKSON Ezekiel 25-10 “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and with furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know that my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!” With this line from “Pulp Fiction”, which has become cult since, Samuel L. Jackson etched himself upon the memory of the cinema enthusiasts and the public as the contemporary figure of the cool philosophical killer with an afro. From Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino to John Singleton, who made him play the legendary inspector “Shaft”, they have all made the most of this multifaceted actor, now a pillar in Hollywood, to whom the Beaune International Thriller Film Festival is proud to pay tribute. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Samuel Leroy Jackson attended Morehouse College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1972. He then performed in theatre productions such as "Home", "A Soldier's Play" and "The Piano Lesson”. Jackson made his film debut in 1973 in “Together for Days” directed by Michael Schultz. In 1991, he played in Spike Lee’s “Jungle Fever” when he was awarded the first and only Best Supporting Performance Award ever given by the judges at the Cannes Film Festival. He also won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor for that performance. In 1994, Jackson made an indelible mark on American cinema with his portrayal of ‘Jules’, the philosophizing hitman, in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”. In addition to unanimous critical acclaim for his performance, he received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations as Best Supporting Actor. The following year, he starred opposite Bruce Willis in “Die Hard with a Vengeance”. In 1997, Jackson starred in “Jackie Brown”, his second film with director Quentin Tarantino. For the latter he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor and the Silver Bear Award for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival. Jackson starred in Joel Schumacher’s 1996 film of the John Grisham novel, “A Time to Kill”. For his performance Jackson received a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a supporting role and a 5 NAACP Image Award. In 1999, Jackson starred in “Deep Blue Sea” for director Renny Harlin. Jackson also made a cameo appearance in George Lucas’ highly successful and popular “Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace”. In 1998, Jackson also starred in F. Gary Gray’s “The Negotiator” and in Francois Girard’s “The Red Violin”. In 2000, Jackson co-starred opposite Bruce Willis in M. Night Shyamalan’s suspense drama, “Unbreakable”. The same year, Jackson starred in John Singleton’s “Shaft” in the title role. Jackson also co-starred opposite Tommy Lee Jones in “Rules of Engagement” directed by William Friedkin. The last two films were screened at the 2000 American Deauville Film Festival, where Jackson was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001, Jackson starred in “Caveman’s Valentine” directed by Kasi Lemmons and Jackson also served as an executive producer on the project. This was Jackson’s second project with Kasi Lemmons with the first being “Eve’s Bayou”, which he also produced in 1997. In 2002, Jackson starred with Ben Affleck in the box office and critical success “Changing Lanes”. Also in 2002, Jackson starred and executive produced the film “Formula 51” and reprised his role as ‘Mace Windu’ in the second instalment of George Lucas’ “Stars Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”. In 2003, Jackson starred in “S.W.A.T” directed by Clark Johnson. In early 2005, Jackson portrayed in “Coach Carter” by Thomas Carter and received the Career Achievement Award for Acting from the Palm Springs Film Festival. In 2006, Jackson also starred in the independent film “Country of My Skull” directed by John Boorman and starring Juliette Binoche. In 2007, Jackson had a starring role in “Resurrecting the Champ”, and a costarring role in the horror film “1408,” based on the Stephen King novel. Earlier that year, Jackson starred in the Craig Brewer film “Black Snake Moan”, and Irwin Winkler’s war drama “Home of the Brave”. In 2008, Jackson’s films included the Neil LaBute thriller, “Lakeview Terrace”, followed by “Soul Men” and the Frank Miller action drama “The Spirit”. Jackson recently completed production on “The Other Guys” directed by Adam McKay, co-starring Mark Wahlberg, and on the HBO film, “Sunset Limited”, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s play, co-starring and directed by Tommy Lee Jones. Earlier this year, Jackson filmed a supporting role in “Mother and Child”, directed by Rodrigo Garcia and starring Naomi Watts. When you love cinema and Burgundy wine, there are some pleasures you just cannot decline. I get “from a reliable and undisclosed source”, as cops say, that Brian de Palma and Oliver Stone have emptied out wine cellars in Cognac. Chances are I might do even better this year in Beaune. After “Paris Noir” last year, the Festival is now to honour New York City with: NEW YORK NOIR “NAKED CITY” “Here is the city and here are the lights”. A camera is hovering above New York, while a voice-over comments: “It is the story of several people, and it is the story of the city itself. With its apartment houses, its skyscrapers, the hot summer pavements, the children at play, the buildings in their naked stone, the people without makeup… The city has a pulse, and it never stops beating…” In just a few words, everything is said in this prologue to Jules Dassin’s The Naked City (1948). Leaving behind tourism and postcards, this New York is the city of film noir, with its crime-ridden alleys (Underworld USA), muggy strip-clubs (Fear City), fashionable clubs (The Wrong Man), boxing halls (Body and Soul), shabby backyards (Killer’s Kiss), dubious looking police stations (Detective Story), elevated railway (French Connection), fire escapes (The Window), the violence in Queens (Kiss of Death) or Harlem (A Rage in Harlem), gangs in Little Italy (Mean Streets), or Brooklyn and its famous bridge, from which Dassin contemplates the “naked city”, warning us that “there are eight million stories in the unveiled city, and we have only told you one.” As early as in 1912 (Griffith and his Musketeers of Pig Alley), New York proved to be obsessed by darkness. And, either showing itself at dawn in the desert streets of Madigan, or hiding in the manholes fumes on the asphalt of Taxi Driver, it hasn’t stopped to share this obsession with us. François Guérif (Publisher, creator and director of the Rivages Noir collection, and member of the Festival’s Red Circle*) As part of the “New York Noir” tribute, a selection of emblematic films will be screened for festival-goers: THE NAKED CITY (1948) By Jules Dassin With Barry Fitzgerald, Don Taylor, Howard Duff, Dorothy Hart The investigation on the murder of a young woman leads an old inspector and his young recruit to a traffic of stolen jewels. KILLER’S KISS (1955) By Stanley Kubrick With Jamie Smith, Irene Kane, Frank Silvera Davy Gordon, a crappy boxer, finds himself battling with a mafia boss to take the woman he loves away from him… 34 SERPICO (1973) By Sidney Lumet With Al Pacino, John Randolph, Jack Kehoe An honest cop having unconventional methods blows the whistle on rampant corruption in the New York police force. Opening a bottle of Burgundy involves the same kind of excitement as a good thriller film… The suspense just before opening the bottle, when you still don’t know what kind of aromas await you, and what kind of stories this nectar will tell you. The shiver as the first sip releases its flavours and speaks of its terroir, of the producer who gave it life, and the vintage of which it is part. The anguish when, finally, the bottle lies empty, like an exquisite corpse, to be fondly remembered by all who knew it! We hope that during the Thriller Film Festival, at official tastings or shared meals, you will have a chance to experience all these emotions, and many more too! By way of introduction, a delegation of producers will be taking part in the Festival’s opening evening, giving festival-goers a taste of Burgundian hospitality at a food and wine matching event. During this “Paulée du Polar”, so-named in reference to the banquets organised to celebrate the end of harvests, a dozen wine makers, firms and cooperative cellars will present their wines, and representatives from local restaurants will devise an accompanying dish. The Aroma Cellar, a fun and educational exhibition, will also be among the evening’s impossible to miss events, allowing guests to test their knowledge of Burgundy wine fragrances. This olfactory tour is a unique presentation, organised by Burgundy wines.
