THE MEADOWS NURSERY SCHOOL
The first steps to independence are often taken when a child starts nursery, these steps and the
early days of separation can have a lasting effect upon your child. It is vital that they are cared for
with the warmth and sensitivity of dedicated nursery staff in a safe and stimulating environment.
We believe a happy, secure and valued child is open to learning.
Our teaching methods have been proven with over thirty years' experience and by applying these
methods we provide an environment in which your child will be offered experiences that inspire,
motivate and challenge them as they develop their skills through play. Our ethos is to help children
develop positive attitudes to learning focussed on their individual needs.
Policies and Procedures
Our qualified and trained staff plan and implement a curriculum that promotes learning in the
following key areas in compliance with the Early Years Framework (EYFS) and our OFSTED registration:
•
•
•
Prime Areas:
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Personal, Social and
Emotional Development
•
•
•
•
Specific Areas:
Mathematics
Literacy
Expressive Arts & Design
Understanding the World
We have developed our policies from the best experiences that we have gained from many years
involvement in pre-school childcare, and by following them your child will have the opportunity to
develop as an individual who will respect and appreciate people in their lives: family, friends and
other adults and children. By developing the talents and interests of your child in a positive way
he/she will be encouraged to develop the necessary social skills and an understanding of the world
around them.
Consistency
All children are allocated a key worker, responsible for the safety, care and education of the
children in their group. Our experience shows that it is in the children’s best interest to attend one
setting and to stay at that setting until they go to school.
Children are accepted into the Nursery from 1 years of age and are divided into three groups:
Buttercups (1-2 years)
Poppies (2-3 years)
Bluebells (3+ years)
KINDERGARTEN: Buttercups and Poppies (1-3 years):
Children learn through play about the social and physical world around them and about themselves. Play is their opportunity for inquiry, problem solving, self-understanding and social interactions.
Following the EYFS Framework and OFSTED the children experience a secure, warm, caring and
stimulating environment for exploring and practicing all the skills necessary for healthy development. Each session at nursery typically includes a mixture of the activities outlined below, which
link back to the Early Years framework:
Art and Craft using wide variety of materials for collage, painting, drawing, junk modelling, three
dimensional craftwork. Cookery, nature study, dance/drama, and gardening e.g. growing vegetables from seed. Free play using books, puzzles, home corner, dressing up, role play, sand/water,
small world and construction equipment, toys that stimulate cognitive development i.e. colour,
shape, manipulative skills, coordination and dexterity.Nature table. Rhythm/movement included in
physical education.Structured group activities, the emphasis being on language development,
logic ordering, sound, colour, tactile, shape and pattern discrimination.
Introduction to early numeracy skills using familiar objects, phonological awareness and understanding of print. Pencil skills using a variety of writing tools appropriate to the age of the child.
Music using a variety of instruments.
PRE-SCHOOL: Bluebells – preparing for school (3+ years):
Learning should be a source of satisfaction and joy. Positive through exploration, opportunity and
encouragement.
Freedom to choose and make decisions for themselves.
This group follows traditional methods in an environment fostering a desire to learn. The emphasis
is on refining and enhancing skills acquired during previous years to embrace the early learning
goals specified for each area of the curriculum. Through our detailed planning and flexible routine
we implement activities that can be fully explored and enjoyed by all children regardless of their
capabilities, needs and requirements.
A healthy diet, fresh air, exercise, rest and play contribute to the child’s physical, emotional and
educational development.
Resources
A warm, friendly environment where children can explore a wide range of appropriate learning
materials, high quality toys and activities inside and outside. Activities are practical, stimulating
and meaningful, with a balance between adult led activities and child initiated.
We also have external visits from local services, e.g. fire, ambulance, police, librarian or the
early years service
Garden
We have a large garden divided into areas making it safe for all to play and experience the great
outdoors e.g. growing vegetables, monitoring wildlife and seasons. The garden is seen as an extension of the learning created indoors, utilised to the maximum.
Break time/Lunch and tea
Mid-morning break is at 10.15 am. Afternoon break is at 2.45 pm. These are both preceeded by
story time. We provide a choice of milk or water and healthy snack of fruit (age appropriate), a
piece of bread and sunflower spread. Lunch is at 12.00, Tea at 4.30pm.If provided by parents,
packed lunch/Tea should be in a container including a cool pack. We offer cooked lunches; menu
samples and prices are available on request.
Enrolment
Please complete and return the enclosed registration/responsibility and standing order forms
attached. Your child will be added to the waiting list and you will be advised a start date.
Car parking
Parents and visitors with cars must park legally and with due consideration to neighbours.
Fees
Fees are charged at the rate shown on the attached registration form and are payable in advance
per calendar month. We reserve the right to levy additional fees for late collection.
We encourage and assist parents as prime educators of their children and work with them in
partnership.
A good working relationship with parents is paramount to the well-being, education and development of your child and we welcome any opportunity to share any skills or knowledge that you may
have with the children and staff. All Children are closely observed and their progress monitored and
recorded. Information on your child’s progress is available at all times, informally on a day-to-day
basis or by appointment with your child’s key worker. We aim to form a relationship where parents
and staff can exchange information easily and comfortably and would ask parents to advise us
immediately of any changes of personal information to the details shown on registration form. We
provide children’s contact books and parents have regular consultation visits.
Community Development
In many cases we are able to offer support and direction with respect to community services,
funding options, training etc. Our thirty years experience includes an in-depth knowledge of
community needs. We see the nursery as a focal point for the community and as a valuable
resource to meet the needs of families e.g. training and social facilities working in many cases with
other agencies including child-minding networks, early years services and Sure Start.
Additional Needs
We welcome children with additional needs and work closely with other agencies to provide the
necessary and appropriate support for all children. Our staff includes a fully trained Special Educational Needs Coordinator and confirms our commitment to full inclusion. Individual Education plans
are based on an observation and assessment within the framework of the foundation stage.
Early Years Funding
There are several funding streams available in childcare costs including Early Years Education
Assistance for 3 and 4 year-olds. Fee Entitlement Funding for eligible 2 year old, Working Families
Tax Credit for working parents, and Early Years Intervention funding.
