Newsletter - Devonport Primary School
Newsletter
Date: 28th May 2015
From the AST…..
Hi everyone!
I feel very privileged to be writing in our newsletter on behalf of Miss Mac this week . I would
like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all Parents, Guardians and School Community
members for supporting what we do here at Devonport Primary School on a daily basis. Your
support and valued contributions are crucial to how we assist in providing the best educational
programs for your child. Even just the friendly greetings we get as we wander throughout the
school. We really appreciate your communication and assistance – so thank you!
Miss Mac and I would like to congratulate all students who participated in the school cross
country on Tuesday. All staff members were impressed with the sportsmanship that students
displayed and we even saw high fives to fellow competitors as they encouraged each other when
running. It was great to see parent support at the carnival and a huge thank you to Miss Narelle
Genge for her organisation of this event. Take a look at the great photos in this week’s
newsletter.
We are also very excited at the prospect of the development of our Parents and Friends
Committee. The next meeting will be next Thursday 4th June at 6:30 p.m. in the Tranquillity Room
– everyone is very welcome to attend. Tomorrow is our school Beanie and Scarf Day to raise
money for the Red Shield Appeal – this was an idea initiated by Logan Jeffrey (2/3 Douglas) who
really wanted to help people. The Student Representative Council were very happy to assist
Logan with his great idea so don’t forget to wear your beanie or scarf tomorrow! Well done to
all students who participated in the Walk Safely to School day last Friday too. I hope I gave you a
sticker! Come and get one if you need to.
Winter is fast approaching so this has meant that the weather has been a bit rough and wet. Can
we please ask that all students and visitors make an effort to wipe your feet as you enter our
school – this will help keep our corridors and classrooms clean from any mud. Students need to
also ensure that they wash their hands thoroughly and take care to blow their nose when they are
a bit snuffly and not feeling 100%.
Please remember too – that Devonport Primary School is a “hands off” school. Please be safe and
ensure that other students are safe too and this will mean that we can all do what we do best –
learn!
Finally – I would like to thank our amazing staff at Devonport Primary and I would like to point
out the little things. The small acts of kindness, of support - that sometimes go unnoticed.
Helping a child find their lunchbox, offering a few kind words of comfort, simply acknowledging
and asking someone how their day is going. All of these moments do not go unnoticed and can
make a huge impact on the day in the life of a child…or an adult. Have a lovely evening – see you
out and about!
With very warm regards
Miss Kate Warren

Grade 2/3 to 5/6 School Cross Country
In beautiful sunshine Tuesday’s grade 2/3 to 5/6 cross country saw a great house competition with
students receiving house points for participating, running, cheering and wearing house colours. All
students that participated should be commended on their willingness to have a go and they
showed great determination and persistence as they competed the running course. Well done to
our house captains who demonstrated leadership skills through leading their houses in cheering
and organising younger students for their races. Leven proved to be a strong long distance
running group winning our house competition with 151 points, followed by Don (145), Forth (134)
and Mersey (109). A full list of our top 4 place getters in each grade group are listed below.

A big thank you to Danielle Emmett, Erin Henderson and the Grade 9 students from Devonport
High for assisting us as marshals and officials around the course. Finally thank you to the all the
parents, grandparents and carers who came to cheer us on.
From Tuesday’s run, a team of 24 grade 5 and 6 students have been chosen to represent our
school at the NWPSSA Grade 5/6 Inter Primary Cross Country. This team will be announced in
assembly on Friday and students will receive additional information regarding this event on Friday.
House Cheering
As a part of our school Cross Country yesterday house captains had to teach and lead their
houses in a house cheering competition. Points were awarded to houses for volume, creativity
and participation. Well done to Forth House who won our house cheering competition with 130
points, closely followed by Don (110), Leven (100) and Mersey (80).
Grade 4/5 and 5/6 House Sport Challenge
Last Tuesday students in 4/5 and 5/6 participated in a house sporting morning as a warm up to last
week’s cancelled cross country. Students participated in Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball games
competing for points for their houses. The sports were run and officiated by grade 9 Devonport
High students. Students received points for their houses through demonstrating sportsmanship,
teamwork, playing by the rules and their games results. A great morning was had by both
students, grade 9 helpers and teachers. Well done to Leven house who won our sports morning
with 570 points, followed by Don (495), Forth (445), Mersey (420).
