MISS WARREN QUALIFIES FOR THE 2014 IRONMAN
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HAWAII
Miss Warren competed in the Port Macquarie Toyota Ironman Australia
Triathlon on Saturday, 3rd May. Her overall time was 10 hours, 8
minutes and 3 seconds placing her as winner of the female 30 to 34 age
group and achieving a time which qualifies her for the 2014 Ironman
World Championships to be held in Hawaii in October this year.
Interview with Miss Warren
Interview conducted by Pleadar Thaow.

Question: What was your overall time for the Port Macquarie Triathlon?
Answer: 10 hours, 8 minutes and 3 seconds.
Question: Where did this place you in your age group?
Answer: I was first Female in the 30 to 34 Age category.
Question: How do you qualify for the 2014 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii?
Answer: You have to win your age group in your gender.
Do you feel that you have achieved a personal goal?
Answer: Absolutely. I wrote this goal down a while ago. I kept myself accountable to it and
constantly went back to it. I am really proud to have achieved this goal and I thank everyone here
for their support especially putting up with my sneezing!
Question: Are there any other goals you have set for yourself now?
Answer: Yes but I want to keep them to myself for now.

Back-to-School for Parents!
When the back-to-school bell starts ringing, parents often hear and read school-related terms that
are unfamiliar to them. Below are three terms and descriptions related to reading instruction that
may help give you a better understanding of what's happening in your child's classroom and what it
all means for your young learner.
Screening
Benjamin Franklin famously said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." In the
classroom, this quote translates to the use of reading screening for all kids. Screenings usually take
place within the first few weeks of school. Rather than waiting for kids to fail at school, screenings
give teachers a chance to identify kids who are at risk of having difficulty. Scores on screenings
help teachers identify kids who may need extra help through small group or one-on-one
instruction. For example, most kindergarten screenings include measures of alphabet and lettersound knowledge.
Differentiated reading instruction
A teacher who provides differentiated reading instruction is one who meets the instructional needs
of all the students in the class by planning different instruction based on the results of an
assessment she's given. For example, while all the students in the class may be working to develop
their fluency skills, kids may be working with different books, and some may still be working on
their sight words. Some students may be working in pairs, others working one-on-one with the
teacher.
Leveled text
Many teachers use leveled texts in their classrooms. Most of the books used in elementary
classrooms are leveled, or placed in a certain category, based on certain criteria such as number of
words and sentence length. There are several common leveling systems; some use letters to
indicate levels and others use numbers. The levels correspond to different grade level materials.
For example, if a school is using a Guided Reading leveling system, levels E-I typically refer to
books written at a first-grade level. If your school uses leveled texts, ask your teacher what
leveling system they use.
As a parent, it can be tough to keep up with the language of schools. These three terms are just a
few of the many reading-related words you'll hear this year. We encourage parents to work
closely with teachers and ask lots of questions. You'll be glad you did!
National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage more
young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 14th successful year it is a colourful,
vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian
children's book that explores age appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the
National Curriculum for Grades Foundation to 6 and the pre-school Early Learning Years
Framework.
Yesterday students from the Prep/1Haywood, Prep/1 Gannon, Prep Lyons,
Kindergarten Meldrum and Reid, 2/3 Douglas, 3/4 Coates and 1 Will/Mitchell all enjoyed reading
Too Many Elephants at the Devonport LINC or in our school library, with guest reader, Mrs
Lucinda Stokes.

We had a magnificent day for our cross-country on Tuesday afternoon, with a wonderful turn out
of spectators and sunshine. The children put in a stellar effort to run the whole distance in their
respective grade level races. The regular running that we have been doing at school three times a
week definitely paid off with many children putting in that little bit of extra effort. We would like
to thank all those parents who helped out on the day. Next week we will take a team to compete
in the NWPSSA Cross Country event in Ulverstone.

house.
Jacob—school because it has buildings and I like to learn.

Devonport’s Mini Magpies U10’s football team is looking for new players. You don’t have
to support Collingwood to play in our team. Our players support a wide range of AFL teams. We
are just a group of young kids learning to play good footy and have fun. Training is on Wednesday
night at Byard Park from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. with an experienced footy coach. Matches are on
Sunday mornings alternating between 9:00 a.m. – midday. Every player gets a game. Beginners
welcome. If you are interested please come along to our next training session on Wednesday
