COUNCIL UPDATE
25 AUGUST 2015
HAVE YOUR SAY DEVONPORT!
Council is currently seeking
feedback on a range of issues
which affect the community.
You can head into Council’s Best
Street office, go online to www.
speakupdevonport.com.au or
contact Council’s Community
Services team on 03 6424 0511 to
request a copy of the survey forms.
Additional Sportsground
Lighting Proposal
Should additional sportsground
lighting be installed in Meercroft
Park and/or the eastern side of
Byard Park to maximise the use of
the grounds for soccer and touch
football? What effect will this have
on nearby residents? We want to
know your thoughts.
Mersey Bluff Sound Shell
Should Council remove the steel
roof structure and retain the walls
of the Mersey Bluff Sound Shell?
The Sound Shell hasn’t been used
for events in some years and the
roof has reached the end of its
useable life, however it may be
feasible to retain the walls and
slab, to enable the site to be
redeveloped into something else,
such as a shelter.
Help Shape a Better Devonport
The Devonport Community Survey
will launch in early September,
and will be your chance to
contribute to a picture of our
community’s wellbeing that can
help both Council, service and
community groups better plan
now and into the future. It will
be a comprehensive survey filling
the gaps missed in the census,
and asking about health, life
satisfaction, transport, sport, food
security, personal safety and more.
Proposed Bike Safety Park
Council is considering a
community led proposal for the
development of a Bike Safety
Park within Pioneer Park, East
Devonport. What do you think of
this idea? Would you use it? Is this
the right location for such a park?
Youth Engagement
Council will shortly commence
focus groups to obtain feedback
on the position of youth in
Devonport. This will be the starting
point for further consultation & the
development of a Youth Strategy.
NEW STRATEGIES
PAINTBALL PLANS APPROVED
Council approved a Planning
Application and granted a Permit
to Use and develop land at 56
Nielsens Road, Tugrah for the
development of a paintball facilty.
Twenty three (23) representations
were received following two
public exhibition periods, with a
number of community concerns
raised regarding potential impacts
including increased traffic, noise,
impact on wildlife, operational
hours and loss of amenity.
Planning permission was granted
subject to a number of conditions,
including the hours of operation
being limited to between 9am
and 4pm on Fridays, Saturdays &
Sundays.
The operation is still subject to
an amendment to the Firearms
Act 1996 coming into effect and
approval by the Commissioner of
Police.
DOG EXERCISE PARK
A new off leash dog exercise
park is to be developed near the
Splash Devonport Aquatic Centre
this financial year, subject to
Crown Land approval.
It is expected the facility will be
welcomed by dog owners looking
to exercise and socialise their
dogs in a safe location, away
from traffic and other distractions.
Council has responded to social
media feedback received
during the recent LIVING CITY
community consultation period, in
deciding to develop an enclosed
dog exercise area at 260 Steele
Street, Devonport. The area was
formerly used as Council’s Parks
Depot, however has been vacant
for a number of years.
Devonport currently has two off
leash dog areas, at Back Beach
and East Devonport, however no
fenced-in dog exercise area.
The dog exercise park will
feature limited seating, shading,
access to water and dog agility
equipment.
PAY BY PHONE PARKING SERVICE
A new ‘pay by phone’ parking
a smartphone ‘app’ or by calling
service will be trialled in Council’s
a customer service number. It will
off street car parks (excluding the
provide users with the option of
Best Street car park) for a twelve
being able to extend their parking
(12) month period. The service
end-time, up to the maximum
will be provided by EasyPark and
allowable, without having to return
enable users to pay for parking via
to feed their car park meter.
Council adopted
the following new
strategies with
immediate effect:
• Bike Riding Strategy
2015-2020
• Volunteer Strategy
2015-2019
The strategies can be
found on Council’s
new website at www.
