President’s message
June will mark the end of my term as
President of the Fairview Community
Association and I appreciate all the
support this community has given us
during that time. When I started out in
October of 2012 we focused on three
main areas for the Association and I
thought I’d use this month’s column to reflect on our
progress in these areas:
Communication
Before my term as president we had already undertook
a facelift of our newsletter and website as well as a new
logo to better brand our name in these modern times.
While our newsletter remains a very important vehicle
for information in Fairview, I pushed to expand our repertoire towards a multimodal approach to reach different audiences. We expanded on this by creating an
email newsletter that had reached nearly 300 people
prior to the anti-spam legislation halved that number.
We have since come back up to nearly 210 on our
distribution list and growing. Shortly after that we developed a Facebook page that is used primarily as an
information distribution channel which has nearly 300
likes. We do our best to keep the information on our
website current. We have improved the quality of our
advertising while utilizing local help in this area (thanks
Paul!). And earlier this year we made a major change
to our newsletter by switching to a different printer/
distributor, Great News, that significantly improved
our distribution (particularly to businesses and apartments), provided a more professional-looking newsletter and saves us a significant amount of money.
Relationships
Our relationships with our community partners and
volunteers has always been strong and I strived to
maintain these through open communication, honesty, hard work, fulfilling promises and showing appreciation. However, I also saw opportunity to build new
relationships within our volunteer base and residents,
public representatives and private businesses. We
have maintained a very good relationship with two of
our biggest, central community partners, In-Definite
Arts and the Fairview Arena. We have worked closely
with two levels of government (municipal and provincial) on community interests and issues and tried
to maintain contact with our two local schools whenever possible. We have expanded our volunteer base
6
in large part by exploring new initiatives and engaging
residents with diverse interests. And we have significantly developed and strengthened ties to many local
and a few larger businesses by finding mutually beneficial partnerships including sponsorship of many of our
events and infrastructure projects as well as through
our Fairview Business Initiative newsletter column. And
most importantly, we have expanded our membership
base to record highs and maintain one of the highest
rates of memberships within the entire city!
Finances
Ensuring our long term financial sustainability was one
of the most pressing areas we have focused on. Some
of the key moves we made in this area include (but
are not limited to): Actively soliciting donations at all
of our major community events; attempting to make
each community event and program financially independent (i.e. cost recovery); better utilizing our Gaming
funds (rather than general funds) to cover many different expenses including some admin/office expenses,
ice rental for skating and shinny hockey, our Hazardous
Waste Roundup expenses and our outdoor movie night
company expense; actively seeking out business sponsorship for all of our events; changing newsletter providers to reduce our printing, editing and delivery costs;
investing our stagnant Gaming and general funds into
GIC’s to realize a small amount of interest; increasing our
membership fee from $10 to $15; changing our financial
service provider to realize more interest and investment
options; eliminating our internet expenses and drastically reducing our phone expenses at our office; expanding fundraising efforts through social events (Wine
& Cheese, bowling night) and other venues (e.g. Bottle
Drive). While some of these decisions may not have always been the most popular, they were necessary and
I stand behind the decisions of the Board here more
than anywhere else. There is still some work to do on
this file, but we are in a much better financial position
moving forward.
It’s been an amazing 4 years full of great successes (with
a few misses along the way), meeting wonderful and
spirited people and developing relationships to last a
lifetime. It has been exceptionally rewarding personally. We’ve come a long way, but when I look around the
City at all the great community initiatives, there is still a
world of possibilities left to explore!
On that note, our AGM is coming up on Wednesday,
June 8th, 7pm at In-Definite Arts (lower level). We will
celebrate another great year for the Association and are

asking for your support at this important meeting. And
please consider stepping up to fill a spot on the Board
(only 4 spots are currently open!) - if you have enthusiasm for improving the community you live in or if you
have a specific interest in something that we are doing
(or could be doing, or could be doing better;), then consider joining us! We also have particular needs to find
individuals interested in our traffic committee, off-leash
dog park committee, Fairview Park committee, social
committee and cleanup events committee

And lastly, another big thank you to all the volunteers
who helped make our Spring Cleanup Events and Membership Drive another success! We continue to have a
super strong volunteer base for these popular events
and a great turnout from Fairview residents and beyond
supporting our efforts. A full wrap-up on the events can

Enjoy your summer!

Fairview Community Association Board Meeting
Tuesday, June 15, 7:00 pm
Fairview Community Building, Lower level
June’s meeting is particularly important as the Board
elects its new executive and wraps up the work for the
year. Come check us out! Please contact our Secretary
at [email protected] if you wish to attend- all members are encouraged & welcome to do so.
Got an idea for a Community event?
Contact any Board member, or our Secretary, to be put
on the agenda at any Board meeting.
We wrapped up Imagine Fairview with a report back to
the community in mid-April. Many ideas were shared
and hopefully some of them can be incorporated into
future ideas for the community. As mentioned in last
month’s newsletter, some very interesting, creative
and informative videos about the community of Fairview were made by each group and are now available
through our website (fairviewcommunity.ca) or directly at the Imagine Fairview website: imaginefairview.
wordpress.com.
Our Social Committee is organizing the details of our
next big events including our Fairview Family Festival
& Film Night on Friday, September 9th (mark your calendars!) and our next Wine & Cheese event (aiming
for October/November).
The Fairview Park (baseball diamond) Committee
continues to work hard to gather information to present to the community to determine the appetite for
repurposing this central park space into a multi-season, multi-use site that considers the needs of many
different demographics of the community. We are
also looking for any past history of the site, photos,
etc. that can be included in a report. Please contact
us if you have any such information through one of
our co-chairs: Vanessa at 403-808-6878 or Dave at
403-454-8327 or email [email protected].

Drive
The Tradition
Continues!
Some very sunny and warm weather was
the backdrop to the Fairview Community
Association Annual Membership Drive this
year. Our fantastic group of Membership
Drive volunteers did it again! Through our
annual “Knock on Every Door” campaign, we
have topped five hundred memberships for
the 2016 – 2017 membership year. We had
several new canvassers this time and along
with our VV’s (veteran volunteers) we once
again have a strong presence of Community
Members in the neighbourhood.
If you still have a Pink Sheet dropped in your
mailbox during the drive, please take a moment to join the Association – all the ways
to do that are listed on the sheet for you.
Here is the Team of Volunteers – Thanks

CALGARY AGING IN PLACE CO-OPERATIVE CONCEPT
“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” Robert Browning (1812-1889)
In a Co-operative the seniors that are members are the owners, they decide what the Co-operative does.
The mission of the Cooperative is to allow for seniors to stay at home and be supported as they age. The first leg of this project is to
find services that support our members by providing services such as house cleaning, handy persons, snow removal, lawn care, etc.
The concept being as a member you get to help determine what those services will be as we grow.

We were fortunate this year that the weather cooperated and
we had mostly sunny days for all three of our cleanup events!
(especially fortunate that the pouring rain held off until the evening of Spring Fling!). Thank you so much to all of the volunteers
who helped make these events a continued success! Here’s what
transpired:
Our 18th Annual Parade of Garage Sales on April 30th, sponsored by Ed Belanger of Maxwell Realty remained extremely
popular with garages full of people throughout the day! Sales
were again very strong likely because we remain one of the earliest parades in Calgary. We had a total of 34 sales in this year’s
parade, down from our record high last year of 44.
Big thank you’s go out to:
•Ed Belanger of Maxwell Realty for continued sponsorship of
this event!
•Stacey McDougall for organizing this event, keeping everything
sorted and delivering packages
•Paul Van Elsberg of paulparrazzi.com for the design of our
beautiful inserts and colourful maps once again!
•Digital Post for printing support.
•Wilk’s Booth YYC food truck - mmmm… very delicious burgers… hope you didn’t miss out!
•The Fairmount Medical Clinic for use of their parking lot during the event and the volunteer crew who helped sweep up the
parking lot before the event!
•The volunteer crew who helped sweep the medical clinic parking lot the night before the event.
Our 20th Annual Spring Fling Community Cleanup continued
to be popular, though slightly less busy likely due to coinciding
with Mother’s Day. The weather was decent (not too hot, not too
cold) and we had an up and down lineup of vehicles until about
1:00pm. However, with an additional garbage truck starting early
in the day this year, the lineup moved a little quicker than the last
couple of years.
Between the cookies and lunch fare, the concession sales were
just shy of $370 and donations totalled around $280! Thank
you for your support! We are still awaiting the total weights of
garbage and recycling but we had roughly 140 different homes
drop off materials plus our volunteer drivers collected from 44

Big thanks go out to:
•The City of Calgary for providing their trucks
and support for the event.
•The private organizations for their involvement - Navajo Metals, Technotrash, and

•And again thank you to Paul Van Elsberg for
the design work on our advertising inserts
and Digital Post for printing assistance.
•Resident Randy Wentz for the donation of
his loader and services to move/crush heavy
materials
•SAWHA for providing volunteer parking directors and IDA/Fairview Arena for allowing
use of the parking lot
•And of course to all of the volunteers from
this community - you continue to be the
biggest reason why this event remains the
best in Calgary!
We had, yet again, a perfectly warm, sunny
day for the 6th Annual Bottle Drive on May
14th. The day ran very smoothly with volunteer truck drivers collecting all the bottles
quickly and a strong volunteer counting crew.
Volunteers enjoyed a free lunch and we had
everything completed right around 2pm. We
raised just over $2500 at this event! (up from
around $2100 last year!).
Thank you to: Youth Volunteer Corp for providing a group of hard working youth volunteers for the event; Chinook Bottle Depot
for their support of this event; and of course
all of the volunteer leaflet deliverers, truck
drivers, truck loaders, sorters, cooks and
cleanup crew (just over 100 volunteer hours!)
for all of their hard work! We hope to see you
out next year!

different houses (a modern day record!). There
were some issues regarding electronics recycling (our recycler will now only accept personal home electronics such as TV’s, DVD’s,
computers), but we will have this sorted out
for next year. We are also planning on having
tire recycling for next year (and likely every
other year as there are minimal amounts of
tires dropped off on a yearly basis).

Our students had two wonderful field trips in May. The
4-year-old classes spent some time in the Inglewood
Bird Sanctuary classroom before heading off on a beautiful nature walk and picnic. The 3-year-old class went
to the zoo and learned all about penguins as they took
part in the preschool penguin program. These were two
memorable adventures and the students are still talking
about them!
The end of May brought a year-end party for all the students. The 4-year-olds proudly participated in a graduation ceremony. June will bring a day to share with
families and school friends with a final picnic together
at Lake Bonavista.
As our school year comes to a close, we would like to
thank all parents and families that helped support our
school this past year. We would especially like to thank
Mrs. Killam for all the love and devotion she has provided to each and every child, as it has allowed for their
early school years to be filled with positive memories.
Please mark your calendars for the 2016/2017 school
year orientation on September 6, 2016. We still have a
few spots in the 3 and 4-year-old classes! If you would

•provide supportive counselling
•help you assess your situation

Neighbours Helping Neighbours
Calgary’s economic downturn is hitting people hard. The
baby and personal care items we have in stock are dwindling rapidly. We are in need of the following to share:
newborn and sizes 1 to 6 diapers and pull-ups, formula
and baby shampoo; for children, youth and adults shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste tooth brushes, bar soap (Dove
recommended), feminine hygiene products, deodorant,
disposable razors, men’s shaving cream.
SWCRC Volunteer Opportunity: Parenting Group Assistant
SWCRC is expanding its parenting education programming. To support the participation of low income and socially isolated parents, we offer free child care for the parents’ young children. As a member of our team of Parenting
Group Assistants, you will care for the children by providing
a safe, loving and fun environment in which to play, socialize and learn. The time commitment is approximately 2 ½
hours, 9:30 – noon, either Tuesdays or Thursdays.
It takes a village to raise a child. Your passion for kids, and
your desire to contribute your knowledge and experience
towards a community effort to optimize children’s social,
emotional and intellectual development, will inspire you to
contact the SWCRC for more information about this important volunteer role. Call 403-238-9222 ext. 222.

est Coast Kids was born 40 years ago in Winnipeg Manitoba when a young mom was
looking for baby furniture for her first born.
Not being able to find a specialty store with options, she
decided to open her very own store in the heart of the
Exchange District.
From the very beginning, the store was founded on
the concept of offering parents a specialty store, from
newborn to teen, which could provide parents with the
best and largest selection of merchandise at the very
best prices. After the success of the Winnipeg location,
Marsha set her eyes on the west! With locations in Edmonton, Vancouver, Richmond two in Calgary and our

Almost summer! Blackfoot District units are busy as bees with activities both
inside and out as many units wrap up their Guiding year. Several units attended Calgary Area Rally Day at Camp Jubilee to learn about Guiding across
Canada and around the world.
Sparks units are wrapping things up with community clean-ups, family cookouts, neighbourhood walks and will have some girls “advance” to the next
level of Guiding which means they will be joining their Guiding sisters in
Brownies in the fall for new challenges.
Brownie units are prepping for camp, year-end BBQs, sleepovers at Telus
SPARK and walks in Fish Creek Park. Some girls will advance to new adventures with the Guides in the fall.
Guide units attended Guide Camp Skills event at Camp Jubilee, are prepping
for tent camp and travel. Third year Guides are finishing work on their Lady

PO Box 2100, Stn ‘M’, Mail Code #8001A
Calgary, AB T2P 2M5
Hello Ward 9!
I wanted to take this opportunity to express to all you
how lucky and privileged I feel to be a Calgarian and to
have the amazing honour of representing the communities of Ward 9. In life, we often have moments where
we take a step back and think about all we have to be
grateful for. I think that for us as Calgarians, and particularly as residents of Ward 9, one of our most significant
expressions of our gratitude is Neighbour Day.
Neighbour Day signifies something important in our
city – something that, for a long time, we have thought
was uniquely our own. A time for us to gather with our
friends, family and neighbours to celebrate the incredible resiliency our city demonstrated in the aftermath of
the 2013 Floods.
11150 Bonaventure Drive SE
That resiliency has been mirrored by our friends from
Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo and all the northern
communities impacted by the destructive fire we have
witnessed.
As Albertans helped us through the flood, we saw that
same outpouring of generosity for our neighbours to
the north from Calgarians.
This June, while some of the evacuees will have returned
home, some may not have a home to return to and will
be dealing with that devastating prospect. During this
difficult time, we Calgarians have done our best to make
Fort McMurrayites feel welcome in our City.
With Neighbour Day happening on June18, let’s share
in the events taking place in Ward 9 – from Tuxedo Park
to Riverbend – and invite our new neighbours to enjoy
the day with us.
Events can be big or they can be small.

Ward 9 coordinated a photo project in each community. We have collaborated with local schools to help
students bring out their meaning of ‘neighbourhood’
through photography. These photos will be exhibited at each Neighbour Day event and later displayed
throughout each community.
We also have events happening all around Ward 9.
Check with your community association or www.calgary.ca/neighbourday to see what’s happening in your
area.
Thanks to all of you who have shown so much generosity and support to our fellow Albertans. We hold community and togetherness as unshakeable values and
our resiliency as Calgarians endures.
Happy Neighbour Day!
