CURRICULUM VITAE
Personal data
Pezzino Antonino was born in Gravina di Catania (CT) on March 11 1948. He attained a Master’s
degree in Geological Sciences and was professor of Petrography (Scientific-Disciplinary Sector
GEO/07) for many years at the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences of the
University of Catania (Degree Courses in Geological Sciences), teaching mainly in petrographic and
geo-mineralogical fields. He is currently a full professor of Applied Petrography and Georesources
(Scientific-Disciplinary Sector GEO/09) at the Department of Biological, Geological and
Environmental Sciences of the University of Catania. His academic career has been developed almost
entirely at the University of Catania, except for a brief period spent at the University of Reggio
Calabria.
Research activity
Since 1970, he has conducted a research activity essentially focused on topics related to the CUN
scientific area 04 (Scientific-Disclipinary sectors: GEO/07 and GEO/09) with various implications
and interactions with other scientific areas (CUN codes: 02, 03, 05, 07, 08, 010).
Such investigations have been carried out jointly with Italian and foreign research teams, as part
of programs financed by CNR, MIUR and the EU. Results deriving from these studies have been
published in more than 230 scientific articles (including about 50 ISI papers) and have been presented
at different national and international congresses.
Long lasting scientific international collaborations, have been established with:

- Ege Universitesi Edebiyat Falkultesi, Izmir (Turkey);

- Department of Geosciences, Basel University (Switzerland);
- LISA (Laboratoire Interuniversitaire Systémes Atmospheriques) Cretèil Université Paris XII

- CRPAA (Centre Recherce en Phisique Appliqués à l’Archéologie) Talence Cedex, Université
Bordeaux III (France).
Management activity
As scientific coordinator, he managed several research projects financed by MIUR (PRIN and
FIRB projects, L. 297 financial resources), CNR, European Community, and Sicilian Regional
Government. These programs focused on scientific and technological investigations applied to
characterization, conservation and restoration of the Cultural and Monumental Heritage and on
petrographic and geological studies of the crystalline basement rocks from Sicily, Calabria, Turkey
and Greece.
He was coordinator of a long term program of multidisciplinary scientific research and training
activities, funded by the Sicilian Regional Government and the European Community. This activity

involved: (1) the coordination of the scientific activity of 67 Working Groups composed of
researchers from 11 of the 14 CUN scientific areas, (2) the arrangement of new suitable management
and monitoring procedures. He was coordinator of a research project, funded by MIUR (law 488,
“Plans for the strengthening of the research networks"), with the involvement of 13 operative units
from different CUN scientific areas (codes 02, 03, 05, 07, 08, 010).
He is currently the coordinator of the Doctorate School in Petrology and Petrography (three years
duration) at the University of Catania.
Managment and evaluation activities
During his academic career, he has performed numerous tasks as component of several governing
bodies:
- Rector’s Delegate for Scientific Research;
- Member of the Work Group ALMALAUREA, concerned with the analysis of the occupational
outlets of the young graduates;
- Scientific Delegate of the University of Catania at the Sicilian Regional Government;
- Chairman of the University Nucleus of Internal Evaluation;
- Vice Rector of the University of Catania;
- Director of the Department of Geological Sciences of the University of Catania.
- Director of a Interdepartmental Research Centre on the deterioration causes for the recovery of the
cultural and monumental heritage (CRIBECUM) run by the University of Catania.
- Coordinator of the Doctorate School in Petrology and Petrography at the University of Catania.
As Scientific Delegate of the University of Catania, he has intensely collaborated to the
governance, with particular reference to research related themes. He has overseen the relationships
between University of Catania and Sicilian Regional Government in the frame of specific plans for
research, development and innovation provided by the Regional Development Plan. He has also
collaborated to the realization of coordinated research projects involving the University of Catania
and the Universities of Lecce, Pisa, Bari, Palermo, Messina, Polytechnic of Milano and Normal
School of Pisa.
He has represented the University of Catania in numerous official meetings, congresses,
manifestations and it has been an active component of Boards of Directors of Consortia and research
Centres, including the University of Catania.
Finally, he has collaborated with other Delegates of the University of Catania for the preparation
of implementation and evaluation procedures for the use of the University research funds.
In the quality of Chairman of the University Evaluation Nucleus, he has coordinated all of the
evaluation activities, with particular reference to teaching, research and administration activities,
promoting specific initiatives aimed to the optimization of the evaluation procedures. In the same
quality, he has taken part in a research project, funded by CNVSU and involving the “Evaluation
Nuclei” of three national Universities, dealing with the relationships between educational systems,
professional profiles and business requirements.
As Vice Rector of the University of Catania he has actively participated to all the management
activities of the University, fully representing it in the regional, national and international governing
bodies.
Managment activity of research centres
He has been Director of the Department of Geological Sciences. He is currently in charge of the
CRIBECUM, which involves about 45 researchers from 7 Departments of the University of Catania,
promoting and setting up numerous research projects granted by MIUR, Cultural Heritage Ministry
and Sicilian Regional Government. In addition, he promoted support and consulting activities for

territorial authorities in charge of the safeguard of the Cultural Heritage and realized a branch of the
CRIBeCuM in the Syracuse branch office of the University of Catania. He has collaborated to the
creation of a Laboratory for Non Destructive Analyses, of which he is at present in charge.
Evaluation of research projects and research results activity
He accomplished a considerable activity concerning the evaluation of research projects and related
results on behalf of MIUR as well as for regional organizations. He has been also a reviewer for
international and Italian peer review journals.
