Letter from the Principal
Dear Alumni and Friends,
The year is progressing very rapidly and I continue to be gratified by the staunch support the faculty, students, parents and
alumni give to BWHS. This year’s school theme, “Courage to
Stand, Spirit to Soar”, is ever present in our minds and hearts as
we work with and for each other as a Christian community.

It is also very gratifying to see the number of alums who send
their own children to their alma mater as well as the number
who are currently members of our faculty and staff. This is a
true testimonial to the confidence and love that our alums share
for their school. It is also wonderful to visit with the many graduates who stop by to update us on how they are doing and to
share their successes. We are always interested in learning about
our graduates’ lives and we invite you to stop by or drop us a
note to keep us informed.

We are very proud of our tradition and of the achievements of
our students in the classroom as well as on the field and court.
Their continued academic success is evident in the laurels earned
by the Class of 2008 with 16 students being recognized by the
National Merit Corporation, over 70% of the class earning academic or athletic scholarships, 17 students maintaining a 4.0 or
higher grade point average and being named valedictorians, and
more than 98% of the class currently enrolled in college for the
2008-2009 school year. They also amassed more than 21,000
hours of service to the community.
Saying Goodbye ..................................................................10
The many accolades our current students receive are a reflection
of the tradition you built when you were a student. You can take
great pride in the fact that this “tradition of excellence” still
echoes in our halls and that the legacy you left behind is still
reaping benefits for others.

We are very excited about the construction that began this summer on our new South Addition. This project will include a new
full-size gym; larger instrumental and vocal music rooms; a multipurpose room which can be used for class liturgies, retreats,
parent meetings and alumni reunions; a guidance and career center; updated locker rooms for both girls and boys; training and
wrestling rooms just to name a few! We hope you will want to be
a part of this major endeavor and support our capital campaign
as we continue to improve our facilities. Visit
our website at www.bishopwatterson.com
for live construction progress!
We continually give thanks for you and
for all the support you so generously give
to Bishop Watterson High School. May
God continue to bless you and your families throughout the year.
Sincerely,

Monsignor Spiers
I knew Monsignor Spiers as my
high school principal, as a
patient, and as a friend. I grew
to know him as a religious
administrator with many, many
talents and accomplishments that
publicly and privately span many
decades.
Monsignor Spiers was a principal
who commanded respect and was
best dealt with cautiously and in
a serious fashion. As a principal,
he was very organized, very disciplined, and always functioned by
running a “tight operation”. He
firmly guided our school academically, administratively, and from
a financial standpoint. For part
of his tenure at Watterson, he
was also the principal at Hartley.
This had to have been very challenging. His funding of new
projects, accomplishing substantial improvements with volunteer
labor and money generated by
candy sales, was amazing. He
was a shrewd and practical negotiator, able to attract very high
quality teachers and coaches with
very modest economic incentives.
Others know much more about
Monsignor’s academic accomplishments after leaving
Watterson. It seems as if he
made a tremendous difference as
a national policy maker.
For reasons that are unclear,
Monsignor Spiers came to me as
a patient and I cared for him for
several years. He even allowed
me to perform surgery for
decreased vision due to a cataract.
I must admit there was some
increased pressure as he entered
the operating room with a series
of prayers and a blessing, wearing
a Watterson stocking cap, advising me to do a good job or possibly be subjected to a detention.
Fortunately, he obtained a very
nice result. This prompted his
production of a text on his experience entitled “The Best, for the
Best, by the Best”. I agree that
he was the best but I was sur-
prised by some of the inaccuracies in his text. He greatly
embellished his surgery experience and my academic credentials. I, fortunately, received a
draft before publication in The
Eagle Review, and pointed out
several inconsistencies which he
explained as reasonably appropriate exaggerations.
I grew to know Monsignor
Spiers on personal basis, visiting
with him and taking him to
Watterson High School football
games. My first experience with

in an unexpected set of circumstances thrust Monsignor Spiers
very integrally into the funeral
and burial proceedings. He evidently did this through the guidance of Father Essman, an
American priest who had very
close contacts with the Papacy.
I learned how Monsignor Spiers
became a military chaplain, and
of his long service during the
Persian Gulf War at a time when
he had started to retire but was
called to religious service n the
military because of his availability
and his proximity to the home of
the 82nd Airborne Division in
Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
In the last years of his life, I
knew Monsignor as an ailing elderly person who continued to be
relevant and who always tried to
help with advice and direction. I
found him to be quite perceptive,
knowledgeable, and able to place
things in historical and intellectual perspective.
At his heart, Monsignor was a
very good man who tried to contribute throughout his life up
until his death. He loved people.
He loved his students in particular, and he was thoroughly supportive of Watterson High
School. It was an honor, pleasure, and my very good fortune to
have known Monsignor Spiers.
Planned Giving/Catholic Foundation
Msgr. Edward Spiers was an integral part of the foundation and
tradition of Bishop Watterson and he certainly left his mark. So
it is hardly surprising that he made providing for the school one
of his final acts.
About five years ago, Msgr. Spiers spent some time planning his
estate. Characteristically, he took the time to research various
tools and options available, and then he made choices that provided for both himself and Bishop Watterson.
the athletic events started on a
cold October afternoon as he
called me about taking him to a
playoff game in Marion. For
some reason, John Raphael was
not able to take him and he
wanted to go to the game. He
thought I might be going so I
could pick him up at his residence and we could attend the
game together. Monsignor was
in his late 80’s at the time and
was in ill health. The weather
was very frigid. I felt uncomfortable with the trip, but we went to
Marion, attended the game and,
fortunately, I got him back in
good health afterwards.
On that trip, I learned much
about Monsignor, about
Watterson High School, about
the Josephinum, and about
Monsignor’s family. I learned
about his attendance at the
funeral of Pope John XXIII.
This was truly amazing story that
Msgr. Spiers had some savings that he never expected to need,
and those he donated outright to establish an endowment fund.
In addition, like most retirees, Msgr.
Spiers had some retirement funds that
he needed to live on. He learned
about a tool called a Charitable Gift
Annuity. Through this vehicle, he was
able to donate the money to The Catholic Foundation and draw
income for the remainder of his life. Then when he went to his
heavenly reward, the remaining balance in the account went into
the Msgr. Edward Spiers Endowment Fund.
The sole purpose of the Msgr. Edward Spiers Endowment Fund
is to provide tuition assistance to deserving students attending
Bishop Watterson High School. He had a dream that someday
that endowment could make it possible for any student who
wanted to attend Bishop Watterson to do so, without concern for
the costs.
Though Msgr. Spiers is no longer with us, that fund will live on
and provide for the future of Bishop Watterson in perpetuity.
Additional donations to the fund are welcome, and they serve as
an excellent memorial to the man and his ministry. If you would
like to memorialize Msgr. Spiers in this way, send your contribution to The Catholic Foundation, 1070 North High Street,
Columbus, OH 43206, and be sure to designate the donation for
the Msgr. Edward Spiers Endowment Fund.

Welcome New Alums
Bishop Watterson High School
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Bishop Watterson,
I am honored to be elected President of the Alumni Association for the 20082009 school year. I graduated in 1970 and have volunteered on various alumni
projects including the Eagle Auction. Did you know the Eagle Auction started in November 1994 and has generated over $850,000 in revenue—for
tuition assistance, cool the gym, and various other school needs? Can you
imagine how many people have worked—in some capacity—on the auction? I
strongly recommend that all alumni consider volunteering to help on this great
event.
15th Annual
Eagle Auction
Wouldn’t it be nice to have the money and time to solve all the problems of
the world! What we have at Watterson is an eclectic group of dedicated
alumni, parents and volunteers who make Watterson an outstanding school. I
am the first one to know that we are all busy. You might be on a committee at
work, volunteer your time at church or drive your children to numerous functions. It is amazing that anything gets accomplished—but it does.
Past Alumni Presidents have written about the need for volunteers and officers. In the AlumNest Summer ’94, Marri McGouldrick Petrucci ’82 wrote of
the need for increasing alumni participation. In EagleView Winter ’97, Joe
Pollina ’72 focused on getting more officers and participation. The EagleView
Winter ’01, Elizabeth Wheeler ’96 thanked the wonderful people of Watterson
and noted the need for more volunteers. Obviously, this is not a new issue. I
will work diligently to keep the Alumni Association humming and seek more
members. I urge you to check the web site: bishopwatterson.com or e-mail
[email protected] with inquiries and see what is happening with
the association.
I would like nothing more than to be at a meeting and go up to someone and
shake his or her hand and ask, “What is your name?” We currently have a
good core of alums, but we need more people with newer ideas. I challenge
each and every one of you to come to one of our meetings. We will not pressure you to participate nor do we collect any dues. The Alumni Association is
open to all Watterson graduates and we need your help. Give us a try; you
will not be disappointed.
Sincerely,
Chris

Spotlight
William (Bill) Lorenz
Class of ‘79
Bill Lorenz is an operations officer for the International
Organization for Migration,
where he helps refugees from
developing countries return to
their homes or resettle them in
new ones. In his role, Bill works
out of the intergovernmental
organization’s regional office in
Nairobi, Kenya, and oversees the
resettlement of refugees and
emergency operations in Kenya
and Somalia.
Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania
before attending Columbia
University’s School of
International and Public Affairs.
His career with the International
Organization for Migration
Bill’s Story – One of my proudest moments was moving 5,000
people through the forest of
Southern Sudan during rainy
season. We slept in the jungle
for 94 days. We had four trucks
and one Land Cruiser. Several
people died, and babies were
born, but we got them there. I
would say we made a difference
in those people’s lives because
they probably would have died if
we didn’t go. It was the middle
of the jungle.
The United Nations was aware
of the situation and requested
IOM to help the group setup a
temporary camp, where they
could stay during the rainy season, before continuing their journey. When the team arrived and
began discussing the temporary
camp, IDPs said, “No, no we’re
going all the way home during
the rainy season” and invited us
to escort them. My three Kenyan
colleagues and I decided to stay
and escort the group all the way
to Raja County.
Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in
finance at the University of
Dayton (UD) in 1984. He first
became involved in development
work in Africa as a UD student
when he traveled to Lesotho, in
Southern Africa, in 1983 with
Crossroads Africa after attending
a presentation by Bro. Peter
Daino, S.M., about the
Marianists’ work in Nairobi.
6
The mission of IOM is to promote orderly migration. IOM
advocates for migrants’ rights as
long as they respect the laws of
the host country. In Sudan,
there’s been a long 20-year war.
In 2005, the government of
Sudan and Sudan Peoples
Liberation Movement signed a
peace agreement. Soon thereafter a group of internally displaced persons (IDP) living in a
camp called Mabia, near South
Sudan’s border with Central
African Republic, decided to
return to their homes in Raja
County in Northern Sudan.
Their road home, if they would
go the normal way, was about
500 kilometers and heavily land
minded. So they decided to
travel through the jungle where
they traditionally hunted. While
the leadership was familiar with
the area, the logistics of moving
5000 IDPs, mostly women and
children, was, to say the least,
challenging.
In 2005, Bill helped 5,000 displaced Sudanese trek 220 miles
to return home to Sudan’s
Western Bahr el Ghazal. BBC
News published Bill’s online
diary of the 94-day journey,
dubbed Operation Rescue. The
International Organization for
Migration’s Director General
Award was awarded to him for
his efforts in Operation Rescue.
In 2007, Bill received the
Christian Service Award from
The University of Dayton’s
National Alumni Association.
He recently married his longtime
girlfriend, Jamhuri.
After living in Dayton and
Washington DC, he returned to
Africa as a Peace Corp Volunteer
in 1990. After his Peace Corp
service he worked for nongovernmental organizations in
road through the jungle and
build 24 bridges over seasonal
rivers.
started after graduation and has
taken him to Kosovo, Papua
New Guinea, Ethiopia and back
to Kenya in 2004.
There are many challenges when
moving that many people
through the forest. We had to
organize air drops of food, clear a
Eagleview Newsletter - Fall 2008
It’s rewarding when one finishes
a job like that. While we felt
bad that 24 people died on the
trip, we felt good that we had 34
babies born. It helped me to feel
that I contributed something to
humanity. I hope, through sharing my experiences, I can help
other people to understand my
values and encourage them to
foster compassion for the less
fortunate.

October 13, 2008
The evening began in chapel with a prayer service conducted by
Deacon Frank Iannarino and Deacon Chris Campbell ’77.
Although the prayers were from the Church’s liturgy for the
dead, our belief in the resurrection was stressed in Deacon Frank’s
homily and in a candle lighting ritual.
We would also like to extend our sympathy to the alumni and
their families who lost parents and loved ones recently.
You are in our prayers.
A reception in the cafeteria and tours of the school followed the
prayer service. Many thanks to all who helped organize the event.
We hope to make it an annual activity.

In December, Nicole was a
member of the United States of

was 2008 BWHS graduate
Hannah Skrobot, a four time

his time from last year’s race by
nearly two minutes. Finishing
fourth and fifth respectively for
the men were BWHS cross
country sophomore Tyler Patrick
and senior Trent Roberts. Tyler
improved his time by nearly four
minutes from last year’s race
while Trent moved up nine spots
from last year’s finish.
Other notable finishers included
the top parents in the race,

goes to Whetstone and

Class Reunions
Class of 1958
An historic event was celebrated
on August 22, 2008 at Bishop
Watterson High School. The first
graduating class of 1958 celebrated
their 50 year reunion with an
informal gathering at their alma
mater. Over seventy alums came
together to swap stories and share
memories of the last fifty years.
They reminisced over some memorabilia, photos, and a DVD of their
prom from 1958. Before the music
started the class was given a tour of

the school and the new nine class
room wing. The party wound
down around 11:00 p.m.
The next evening they attended
Mass at St. Elizabeth Church. Fr.
Charles Cotton, a ’64 BWHS
graduate was the celebrant. After
Mass the grads of 1958 had a formal dinner in the new parish hall
catered by Anthony Susi, a ’59
BWHS alum. The food and
refreshments were wonderful. The
class donated a beautiful granite
bench to Bishop Watterson in
memory of the class.
Many thanks to chairs Charlie
Nance, Dave Serio, Mike Meyer
and Bud Collins. This committee’s
efforts resulted in a great reunion
turn out. Over 65% of the class of
1958 attended.

forty alums in attendance who
enjoyed a buffet dinner and cash

evening concluded with several
classmates dancing to the songs of

Class of 1968
The Class of 1968 held their 40th
class reunion the weekend of July
11th and 12th. Friday night at
Amano’s, in Worthington, was a
wonderful informal evening of
pizza and drinks, rekindled friendships, and a group photo, highlighted by Pat Jennings arriving on
his Harley motorcycle! Saturday a
few classmates enjoyed a round of
golf at Champion’s Golf Course.
The reunion weekend was capped
off by a memorable evening at the
Worthington Inn. They enjoyed
good food and drinks, but mostly
they enjoyed seeing and reminiscing with classmates – most of
whom they had not seen in many
years.

The Bishop Watterson Class of
1988 celebrated their 20th reunion
this August in fine fashion. The
weekend started with a casual gettogether on the patio at the Varsity
Club on Friday night. Saturday

Thanks to all who were involved in
the planning, especially Carolyn

(Hungler) Woodford, and Tiffany
(Valentino) Rigsby. There were

down the “lost” members of the
class and their help is greatly
appreciated as well!
A challenge was sent out to the
class to participate in the Celebrate
the Past...Embrace the Future campaign. If you have not taken the

CLASS REUNION CHALLENGE
Class ’58 • Class ’63 • Class ’68 • Class ’73 • Class ’83 • Class ’88 • Class ’98
For those of you who had Class Reunions this past summer, congratulations on celebrating the
anniversary of your graduation from Bishop Watterson High School!
As you are already aware, we have extended a “Class Reunion Challenge”. In appreciation of your experience at Bishop Watterson and in
support of future generations, we hope you consider a pledge of $100 per year for the next five years. When 40% of the members from your
class make a commitment to our Capital Campaign, your class will be given the naming rights to a bleacher section in the new gymnasium.
Your commitment to your alma mater will be proudly displayed for visitors, alumni and friends for many years to come. We know that you
will do what you can to assist us in this important undertaking and we are grateful for your generosity.
We were very excited to break ground this summer for the South Addition, which will provide space for class liturgies, a guidance and career
center, music rooms and athletic facilities that would benefit every student. While there is much work to be done if we are to reach our goal,
we remain confident that our efforts will be rewarded and that we will maintain our “tradition of excellence” in Catholic education.
We cannot succeed without your continued help!
