Hereford Leadership
By: John Meents, AHA Field Representative
The summer of 2012 will be one to remember. It reminds me of
1988, exteme heat and no rain. That summer Peg and I were living
in Ames, Iowa. We had some great friends who farmed many arces
and their crops were really struggling. Just no rain! To lighten the
stress amoung the local grain farmers, Peg and I constructed an eight
foot paper mache cactus. We painted it green, and one night we
planted it with a steel post in a soybean field about 50 yards off
Highway 169 going into town. That cactus was the talk in the
community till rain came that fall.
I guess humor helped lighten the devestation that drought and
heat can bring. Here are a few common sense tips that may help in the management of your cattle with
drought and heat stress;
1. Consider early weaning. The advantages of this is that cows take less high quality roughage when
they are dry verses nursing a calf. As pastures become short, hay qualilty usually decreases. Thus,
weaning calves and putting them on a concentrate ration will increase calf weaning weights. In addition,
the cows will go into winter with a higher body condition score and this will help increase rebreeding
percentages.
2. Provide additional shade. Allow cattle to have all shade that is possible including trees, buildings, and
supplemental shade like the construction of tempory sun screens.
3. Add additional alternative fresh water source. Both quanity and quality of fresh water are important.
Drinking water that is cool and clean will increase consumption of water which helps bring down
intermal body temperature. I have automatic waters in my barn, and as the tempetures increase this
summer, I added tanks as an additional source. I was amazed of the amount water consumed from the
tanks after they were added.
4. Improve ventilation where ever possible. Add fans in barns to increase air movement. This is very
important with higher hummity levels. Water mist cooling systems are also another option to assist in
keeping cattle more comforatable during the hottest part of the day.
5. If you are in a rotational grazing program, there are advantages of rotating fields or paddocks more
rapidly than normal. Also, rotate pastures in the evening rather than mornings. In extereme heat, cattle
will graze during the late evening and night. This will increase forage consumption.
6. Provide free choice mineral and salt. This is very important as the salt will help increase water
consumption, and excretion of urine. The more cool clean water consumed, the lower the bovine internal
temperature will be, keeping cattle more confortable.
7. Do all things possible to reduce stress. The movement of cattle should only be done during the coolest
part of the day. Sometimes this is not possible, if not, be sure that ventilation is at the highest level.
Congratulations to all the Junior Hereford Association members who participated at the 2012 Junior
National Hereford Expo. I sincerely hope that your memories of the trip with your family will be ones
that you will always value.
As the fall sale season approachs, if I can assist in marketing your Hereford cattle please feel free to
contact me at [email protected] or 419-306-7480

As Bailey concludes her junior
show career. we would like to thank
everyone who had a part in her
success. We can’t begin to list
everyone along the way who had a
word of advice or kind word that
made this time in our lives special.
A special thank you to Grandpa
Dean and Grandma Jane who
started this adventure and without
your help, we could have never
made it this far.
The Brian and Josh Blackford
families who have been our
mentors from day one and helped
keep things running at home while
we gallivant around the country.
Steve and Vicki Lorenzen, no
words can express how much we
appreciate your help and guidance.
Jeff Levernz whose help and
encouragement along the way
made this adventure much easier.
Chad Benedict whose few kind
words to a little girl about fitting
helped give her the confidence to
soar at the national level.
Kyle McMillan who helped her
understand what you can achieve
with a lot of hard work and
dedication.
Congratulations…
