Hereford Leadership
New Year, New Decade, New Challenges,
New Opportunities!
By: John Meents, AHA Field Representative
Happy New Year to everyone! On this snowy January
morning, I remember sitting at my desk in 2005 and writing
about how the breeding decisions to be made that spring
would affect your herds in 2010. How time flies! 2010 sure
seemed a long way away at that time. Now it is here, not only
a new year, but a new decade. With this new decade, we have
new challenges and new opportunities.
One of the biggest challenges that I see for this decade is the continued rise in cost of
inputs. I will call these costs the three "F's — Feed, Fuel, and Fertilizer. The good news
about this, is that you have Hereford cattle, and Herefords are the most efficient breed of
cattle that walk. Another challenge in this new decade will be demand. Not the demand for
Hereford cattle, but the demand for beef. A slower economy, more unemployment, and
potentially growing government taxation has people seeking cheaper protein sources, such
as chicken and pork.
On the opportunity side, technology will continue to change and improve. While it seems
that we already measure our cattle every imaginable way, I am sure that new technology this
decade will bring new measurements for us to evaluate, discuss and implement. Please,
never forget my favorite index, the "CBI" - Check Book Index. If your check book balance
does not have black ink at the end of the year, the Maternal Milk EPD, or the amount of
intramuscular fat from your last load of steers harvested will not really matter.
I also see other opportunities for seedstock producers in marketing. The American
Hereford Association recently did a major facelift with the AHA website – Hereford.org.
This was accomplished with the guidance of Hereford breeder Kim Jones, Darlington, Wis.
(Hondo Group). Your new website is fresh, crisp, informative and user friendly, If you have
Hereford genetics to market, advertising with POP UP ads on the new and improved
Hereford.org site is a sound marketing opportunity. For more information go to
www.hereford.org or the 2009 December Hereford World, page 32.
Marketing cattle on the internet will continue to grow by leaps and bounds in this decade.
BuyHereford.com is a new web site that the American Hereford Association provides to its
members. BuyHereford.com is an excellent opportunity for Hereford breeders small and
large, to market their genetics on the world wide web. It puts a small breeder on the same
playing field with a large breeder, giving them not only national exposure but global
exposure. BuyHereford.com is a tremendous advertising and marketing tool. Any member
of the AHA can sell bulls, heifers, semen, embryos, or commercial cattle, as well as
equipment of all kinds on BuyHereford.com. If you are not selling on it, you are missing a
marketing opportunity. If you are not looking to buy on it, you are missing genetic
improvement opportunities. Print media like the Hereford World and local newspapers
along with internet advertising can take your Hereford operations to the next level. Call me
today for your marketing needs.
REMEMBER TO MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO
MARKET THEM TOMORROW!
The Illinois Polled Hereford Association is a not for profit organization with membership consisting of Hereford enthusiasts. The
Illinois Polled Hereford Association believes that the breed has tremendous contributions to make to the beef industry and the
future generations of cattle enthusiasts. The organization strives to deliver value to its membership by focusing resources on:
1) aiding members in marketing their operation and Hereford genetics,
2) promoting the Hereford breed and Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) to non-members,
3) providing educational opportunities to the membership, and
4) supporting the state junior associations through scholarship and award programs.

In death, he joins his wife, Iris Gene (Gardner) VanBuskirk. They were married in 1961
and together they raised a large loving family. They are survived by: four children, Perry
(Kathy) Brown, Brad Brown, Kate (Tony) Morgan, & Carol (Ron) Firkins; thirteen
grandchildren, Kristopher (Jill) Brown, Libby Brown, Tyler (Mimi) Brown, Jonathon
(Carrie) Wills, Jennifer (Chad) Noggle, Garrett Kemp, Megan Kemp, Sarah Morgan, Andi

His family and friends were the things that Bussy enjoyed most in life. He graduated from

He grew up farming with his father and then started his own farm and cattle business on a

Georgetown Fair provided Bussy with lifelong friends. He will always be remembered as a
guy who had a saying or name for everything. His language was his own. He never met a
stranger and always found a way to connect with people. He was the best father, husband,
father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend that a person could ever have.
Memorials may be made in Bussy’s name to Georgetown Fair Association or the Shiners’
Hospital for Children, 2001 S Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131-3597.

Don worked in the grain elevator business and owned Hanke Elevator. He also owned
and operated Hanke Polled Herefords. He was a member of the Clinton County Fair Board
and the Heart of America Hereford Association. He enjoyed showing cattle and riding his
horses.
Memorials in memory of Mr. Hanke may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in

Funeral Home.

This is a powerful young herd sire in the making. His dam has done an outstanding job
for us. She never misses and has a beautiful udder. His sire is making his mark across
the country and undoubtingly left us a strong set of calves. Walnut himself is a powerfully
constructed, big middled, stout made bull that still blends into a smooth package. We
really, really like his guy’s kind. His numbers are in check; his phenotype sets him apart,
and his genetic background is proven. Make sure and check this one out!
Retaining 1/4 semen interest.

2W’s sire, Bright Future, has established himself as a premier sire of show winners and his
daughters coming into production are very encouraging. 2W’s dam is a powerful, attractive
daughter of the noted sire of females, Wrangler 19D. We are pleased that she consistently
passes her power along to her offspring. She is one of the only two cows that we have
flushed in recent years. 2W himself is a growthy, stout, correct, red-necked, pigment-eyed,
muscular rascal who should make a major contribution to the new owner’s herd.

A very stylish eye appealing heifer by Channing. 903 has been a very docile easy keeper
from the beginning. She has an abundance of natural thickness and is more than
adequate in terms of her depth and bone work. She combines all of this with a very sexy

produced show animals and females with built in fertility and longevity. Grandam is still

Here’s an extra fancy April heifer! Her dam was a class winner at a past Junior National.
Blake should really be keeping this heifer for a bred and owned, but it’s time to start the
college fund! This one will definitely compete next year. She has all the right parts!

929 is bred very much the same way as Tamar Adcock’s “Connor” heifer that was
Reserve Grand Champion owned female at the 2008 Junior National and Supreme

structurally correct with loads of volume, but still shows a lot of femininity through her

Molly has been the one that has caught your eye from day one. She has always had that
extra depth and thickness without much feed. The dam (Vicky 1026) was sold to
Detweiler for $22,000. With over 50 registered offspring there is no doubt 1026 is a great,
fertile, powerful donor. Adding Moler to the equation gives her the look needed for the
ring. Take a second look at the EPDs on this gal. The result of this mating has produced
a female that I think will work in almost any situation whether it be the pasture or the ring.

5039 hasn’t missed in her first three calf crops, and 950 is arguably her best yet. Last
year’s heifer did her share of winning for the Katzenberger family in Wisconsin, including
being a class winner at the Jr. National. 950 is sired by TLR Hot Shot, who is out of
National Champion Fancy Judy Pace. Jessies Girls should probably go in the
replacement pen, but we have decided to bring our best as our first time consigning to

pedigree to be a true brood cow. Don’t miss her sale day!

This is a unique mating that should result in some outstanding offspring. The dam is a
29F daughter out of a previous Jr. National Champion Female 511P. What a proven and
predictable pedigree: Online, 29F, and Bright Future. The dam of this lot is a powerful
female that is amazing in production with a picture perfect udder with added milk flow.
Again, the Back N Time calves appear to have an enormous amount of potential and
should meet the criteria of the most pressing cattleman. This cross will work, buy with
confidence and reap the benefits!! Selling 4 eggs, guaranteed 1 pregnancy.

This is a great opportunity to acquire some breed leading genetics! The dam, 57R, is an
own daughter of the Reserve National Champion 23H, sired by the consistent and
proven Channing. This is her first flush, and there will be a lot more heard from this
power-type female. The sire of this embryo lot is the Champion bull in Kansas City, Back
N Time. His first calves have arrived and have come unassisted. If you're looking to
enhance your genetic base without sacrificing quality and show ring appeal, then take
these eggs home! Selling 4 eggs, guaranteed 1 pregnancy.

Truly a rare opportunity here! 206 is a Pure Gold out of CJH Domino 552’s dam. We liked
her as a calf in Denver and later purchased her as a 3-year-old through the Mill Creek
Sale in Kansas. Her first three calves were Show Heifer of the Year for Randa Owen,
Iowa High Points Heifer for the Vogle Family and Purple MB Womanizer. He won the S.D.
State Fair and Keystone. Last year’s natural calf was a Jr. National Class Winner and
State Fair Division winner for Karlee Osborne. Tundra was lost at the height of his
popularity, and the semen has become extremely scarce and expensive. No Online in
the pedigree. Consigned by Purple Reign Cattle Co., Toulon, IL (309) 995-3013

Apple Ridge Foundation Female…ARF
Ms Bridget D48R
Embryos selling by LCC Back In Time and BH Connection in
the IPHA Elite Embryo Auction on February 26, 2010.
ARF Ms Bridget was an outstanding show heifer and has been an even better
donor cow for us. D48’s show winnings include the 2006 Calf Champion at the Ill.
State Fair Jr. Show, Grand Champion Female 2006 & 2007 Mid-South Fair,
Memphis, Tenn. and Grand Champion Female 2006 & 2007 DuQuoin State Fair.
D48R has averaged 24 #1 embryos per flush.
We believe these matings to be an outstanding cross. We have calves on the
ground from the D48R x Connection mating and feel these calves are just what
you’re looking for. They are big boned, big ribbed, big footed and extremely sound.
We, along with Lowdermans, have D48R x Back N Time embryos in and are
anxiously awaiting their arrival.
