MARVIN GAYE Previously available only as part of the “Marvin Gaye Vol.1 1961‐1965 (CD BOXED SET)” these titles are now available individually on vinyl LP! Marvin Gaye was originally a member of The Marquees, later known as The New Moonglows under co‐founder Harvey Fuqua’s direction. The group recorded several sides for Chess in 1959, including the song "Mama Loocie", which was Marvin's first lead vocal recording. The group found work as session singers for established acts such as Chuck Berry, singing on the hits "Back in the U.S.A." and "Almost Grown". In 1960 the group disbanded and Marvin relocated to Detroit with Fuqua where he signed with Tri‐Phi Records as a session musician. Impressed by the singer, Motown president Berry Gordy fought Fuqua on his contract with Marvin and shortly afterwards, Marvin signed with Motown subsidiary Tamla. Commonly referred to as the “Prince of Soul,” Marvin Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown Records during this period and was one of the greatest voices to emerge from the label. The duo, made up of Simon Williams and Will Horrocks, found the insides and mechanisms (hint) of the instruments they were working with to be of increasing interest as the project developed. They found a discarded, portable piano in the former’s new flat and spent hours painstakingly recording its notes, creaks and noises. This left them in possession of a MIDI keyboard that sounded like something from “a bar in a wild west movie” and featured heavily on the album. ‘Ruiselede’ makes reference to the town whose piano museum in which they were able to record Hamasyan playing on its collection of antique grand pianos. LV have always thrived by working with new collaborators and environments. In the past there’s been joint efforts with London poet Josh Idehen and journeys to South Africa for kwaito‐infused productions with Johannesburg MCs. BLACK WAX is a musical-political entertainment film produced
and directed by Robert Mugge in 1982. It was the first American
film to be fully funded by Britain's then-brand-new Channel 4
Television and also likely the first film to use Steadicam from first
frame to last. BLACK WAX centers on the late African American
poet-singer-songwriter Gil Scott-Heron - the man Melody Maker
called "the most dangerous musician alive" and many dubbed
the forefather of rap music - and his 10-piece Midnight Band. It
was filmed entirely on location in Washington, D.C., primarily at
the Wax Museum Nightclub (now defunct). Songs performed by
the band include such potent political numbers as "Winter in
America," "Alien," "Johannesburg," "Storm Music," "Waiting for
the Axe to Fall," "Gun," and "'B' Movie" (a scathing analysis of
how and why Ronald Reagan was elected President of the
United States).

This superb FM radio broadcast, transmitted live from Joni's
show at Tokyo's famous Nippon Budokan, is a fine example of
such a show, mixing as it does the old, the new, the borrowed
and - while the title track from her 1971 meisterwork is
inconveniently absent - cuts from 'Hissing', 'Hejira' and 'Mingus'
are all in evidence. Hopefully, therefore, a fine time was had by
all those in attendance. For anyone listening today, a fine time is
hereby guaranteed.

This superb live recording, taken from an FM radio broadcast of
The Band playing at the Mandel Hall during their first re-union
tour following the group's split in 1976, was nothing short of a
roaring success. Despite the absence of Robbie Robertson
who, following some perhaps unfortunate remarks made by
Rick Danko after the initial split, had declined to take part which some critics saw as blasphemous - Robbie had also, by
this juncture, all but turned his back on the worlds of pop and
rock music and was concentrating largely on movies, in which
he would sometimes feature in an acting role, sometimes
provide some/all of the soundtrack, and sometimes do both.
The 'other four' however were hungry to get back on the road
and did just that in July 1983.

This slice of the Allman Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl in
August of 1972, clearly displays the band continuing to forge
their musical vision. It's a remarkably strong performance that
precedes the set closer.
When they return for an encore, the brilliant Texas guitarist,
Johnny Winter, has joined the group on stage. Without further
ado, they launch into Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode'. Although
unrehearsed, the performance crackles with raw energy,
featuring Winter on vocals and both he and Betts take turns
shredding on guitar. The second encore (a cover of Elmore
James' 'Dust My Broom') concludes a delightful example of
likeminded musicians having a lot of fun just winging it for the
sheer delight of playing together.

SRV performed on the evening of 1st September, and despite
the difficulties prevalent during its recording, 9of the 10 tracks
from Soul To Soul were played, alongside another 7 songs from
earlier albums, cover versions and - at the time - unreleased
rarities. Many of his problems with abuse would continue to
haunt Stevie Ray across at least another year following the
release of Soul To Soul, when, after a near death experience, he
booked into a London Clinic for rehab - but the sheer power and
intensity of the album is almost certainly best illustrated in this
live rendition - indeed for many of those who are familiar with this
recording, these are generally the preferred versions of the
album's marvellous songs.

This show features Lynyrd Skynyrd in an environment where
they felt comfortable and were at the top of their game. With the
exception of the Allman Brothers, most southern rock bands
had stayed away from the UK during this period because the
country's music scene was so wrapped up in glam, pub-rock
and the emerging punk scene. But that didn't scare Skynyrd,
who confidently played their brand of riff-driving southern fried
rock boogie to near capacity crowds around the British Isles.
The band ends the show with a predictable, but crowd-pleasing
version of their radio hit, "Free Bird," which clocks in at 12:20.
Sadly, the group were destined for tragedy, when 3 of their
members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, died in a
plane crash less than two years after this show was broadcast
across the USA on the King Biscuit Flower Hour.

Years ahead of his time, composer, keyboard player, bandleader,
poet, and philosopher Sun Ra coupled images of outer space with
those of ancient Egypt, acoustic instruments with electronic ones,
and modern American musical genres (jazz, soul, gospel, blues,
swing) with the sounds of Africa and the Caribbean. He also
combined his music with dance, poetry, colorful costumes and
backdrops, and pure theatricality, influencing other innovative
musical ensembles as diverse as the Art Ensemble of Chicago,
George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, and Frank Zappa's Mothers
of Invention, and he was among the first musicians to use electronic
keyboards and portable synthesizers in public performance. For his
one-hour documentary, SUN RA: A JOYFUL NOISE, Robert Mugge
spent two years shooting Sun Ra and members of his so-called jazz
Arkestra in a wide variety of situations. Ensemble performances
were filmed at Baltimore's Famous Ballroom, at Danny's Hollywood
Palace in Philadelphia, and on the roof of Philadelphia's International
House on the edge of the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
Sun Ra's poetry and mythological pronouncements were filmed in
the Egyptian Room of the University of Pennsylvania's anthropology
museum, in a sculpture garden in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, in
front of the White House in Washington, D.C., and inside and outside
of the house he shared with key band members in the Germantown
section of Philadelphia

Showcasing a varied program of gorgeous vocal numbers,
provocative improvised pieces, intimate ballads and strikingly
original composed works, this is one of his strongest works.
This band has no business being as good as it is this far into our
existence, and it just seems to be getting better." Holdin' the Bag
offers a compelling blend of brawny badassery and sensitive
songcraft on such memorable originals as the high-lonesome title
track, which kicks the album off on a deceptively spooky note,
and the rousingly twangy anthems "High and Outside," "Man On
A Mission" and "Jibber-Jabber." The album closes on a
thoughtful note, with an update of the Hank Williams Jr. standard
"All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)," with updated lyrics
