Calling all dads, people who have dads, and people who know dads! A tongue-incheek instructional lecture by semi-competent and totally hysterical first-time father Lucas Myers will be featured in the Rotary Hall Studio Theatre when Hello Baby! comes to the Cultural Centre on February 22. A professional actor, comic, and musician, Lucas has gained a reputation as an utterly unique performer, who takes the role of writer, producer and star in all of his often quirky productions. Chilliwack residents may recall Lucas’ appearance at the Cultural Centre last season for “Deck”, in which he brought big tools and bigger laughs, getting his hands dirty and building a full-sized deck in our Rotary Hall Studio Theatre! Lucas’ upcoming appearance in Chilliwack will focus all of his trademark twists and incredible versatility onto what he describes as “those things we have all experienced in one way or another” – the thrills of parenting! Lucas says that his main realization after the EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY! CENTRE birth of his daughter (“other than – this is serious now!”, was that “although there were loads of materials and information for expectant moms, there wasn’t too much out there for dads. Both that and the intense experience of actually creating another human being were really inspiring, and I thought it was time to fill the gap with a show that focused on what it’s like becoming a father.” So does Hello Baby! reflect Lucas’ own journey into parenthood? “Oh no!” he laughs, “my own experience hasn’t been this hilarious, but the show does deal with the fun things dads come across, such as in-laws, being a responsible human being, and considering whether you can operate a fax machine/belt sander/ breast pump on two hours sleep. It’s a lot of fun, packed with lots of kooky characters!” The kooky characters Lucas mentions are of course all played by himself, and with the addition of his sidesplitting signature comedy songs you can be sure that Hello Baby! will be a totally unique show that lets the creative juices of this talented comedian flow. “I just love finding different ways to tell a story”, says Lucas, “so I use as many approaches as possible to achieve that. Whether it’s visual, musical, or physical, I’m always trying new things to make people have a great time!” Come and laugh along as Lucas takes the audience on an adventure through parenthood, when he returns to the Cultural Centre this February! Ladies, Prepare to Laugh! The Cultural Centre will be hosting some of Canada’s most raucous comedienne’s this International Woman’s Day for our fourth I am Woman - Hear me Laugh event! We spoke to this years emcee and professional lady of laughter, Janice Bannister, to get a taste of what to expect... Comedy Festival. I played as many venues as possible, but eventually realised that at the end of the year that my income was only really enough for a couple of beers, a bottle of water and maybe a slice of pizza! I decided to combine my passion with my background in psych nursing, and started teaching ‘laugher as wellness’ courses after learning that laughing was proven to improve our health! It’s I am Woman - Hear me Laff hits our Main Theatre March 8! good for you biologically as well as emotionally!” Can you tell our readers a bit about your comedy background? “Basically I started comedy in 2003 after taking a class at Langara College. I got the bug real quick and went on to perform as many open mics as I could straight away! I applied for the ‘Comics with a Day Job’ and ‘Funniest New Female’ competitions in Vancouver and won them both, and that quickly took me to the Vancouver International What drew you to stand up? “I had lots of background in public speaking and presentations through work, and when I realised that people were so much more open when they were laughing and having a good time I decided I wanted to find a way to really focus on that. I had a very happy, ‘laughy’ house and family growing up, and we were always trying to outdo each other with jokes, so it’s been a natural progression to doing this professionally. people really flourish and gain a lot of confidence. Sometimes it’s hard to leave my classes because everybody is laughing so much and having so much fun! Seeing everybody come together in that open environment is great, laughter is such a huge connector for people.” You mention that personal experiences are important in your lessons, and a lot of your own material is based on your life. How do you turn those little scenarios into something that gets huge laughs? Although it’s different going out of your comfort zone and exposing yourself on stage at first, it’s all I wanted to do, and I’m so glad that I did!” It’s interesting that you mention coming out of your comfort zone, because that’s a big focus of how you teach comedy. Can you tell us about teaching comedy? Is it as funny as it sounds? “Yeah it sure is! After I did a little subbing for the teacher whose course I originally studied, I looked at turning it into a business. Ever since I’ve been very busy teaching comedy at Douglas College, and Kids Camps in Kitsilano, and I have a huge range of students; my youngest is 8 and my oldest is 85! Sometimes people do struggle a little coming out of their comfort zones, or they think ‘what’s funny about my life or my story’, but when they realise that their own experiences and observations can be great tools for both getting laughs and laughing at themselves, people really “It’s all about taking a true story and your personality, and embellishing! Being honest about yourself and just simply adding a punchline that turns what you think is a pretty standard story into a hilarious joke. Whether you’re divorced, your kids are weird, or your body is changing, just magnify and take it in a direction that the the audience doesn’t expect. If you’ve been divorced seven times, make it fifteen! Then say “but I killed three of them off”. Audiences don’t expect it, and that’s what gets the big laughs! Go big or go home!” This is the fourth ‘I am Woman’ comedy festival on International Woman’s Day here at the Cultural Centre - how does it feel to be emceeing this night of great female comics? “Well I’m really very excited! I was so pleased when Michael (Artistic Director for the Cultural Centre) called me about being the emcee. I’ve been aware of the event at the Cultural Centre since it began, and know lots of the comediennes that have performed there in the past, so it’s great to have my moment to be involved in such a great event. It’s funny, Michael and I joked about how ‘I am Woman, Hear me Laff’ is a celebration of womanhood, on International Woman’s Day, organised by a male! It’s awesome to see how the event has grown over the last few years and become a successful mainstay on the Cultural Centre’s season. I can’t wait!” So what should our audience expect? It sounds like you’re really excited for the show! “The beauty of this line up is that you have somebody in their 30s, 40s, and 50s all performing! There’s a great diversity and you’re going to get to hear hilarious stuff from all ends of the spectrum. There’ll be something for everybody, and even though it’s a female show, the guys need to be there to listen too! (You never know, you might learn some tricks…) It’s an awesome diverse group, and there’ll be lots of laughter based on what women like to joke about – believe it or not we do more than laugh at men! It’s gonna be a great time, and we’ll do a hell of a lot of laughing!” “For sure! I’ve worked with both Melanie Rose and Stephanie Michelle before, who will both be performing, and I’m looking forward to meeting the headliner Susan Rice. It’s funny because Melanie and Stephanie actually both got into doing stand-up by taking my class, so it’s Jan will be joined for this hysterical celebration of womanhood by Stephanie Michelle, Melanie Rose, and headlining act Susan Rice: a veteran comedienne with 30 years of laughs behind her (pictured above). Pick up our next issue for an introduction to these hysterical performers! ALL SHOW TICKETS AVAILABLE AT 604.391.SHOW awesome to see them both perform at this event, as well as to all get together again!
