Physical Fitness and Academics
As parents and educators, we constantly strive to find ways to help our
children do better in school. We examine many factors, including teachers’
instruction, curriculum design, instructional materials, along with children’s
study habits and effort. But what about getting them moving?
A growing body of research links physical activity with increased academic
performance in children, according to Jacqueline Stenson, former senior
health producer for msnbc.com. Stenson cites a Michigan State University
study involving 317 students which found that the fittest group scored almost
30 percent higher than the least fit group. The least fit group also had grades
in core classes which were 13 to 20 percent lower than all of the other kids.
Why the difference? Experts speculate that exercise may help students pay
attention and focus better by burning off pent-up energy. It has been
proven to boost mood and self-esteem, and increases blood flow to the
brain, which may help with memory and concentration.
Is it important for you to rush out and sign your child up for sports? Not
necessarily. While sports certainly can help children to shape up, regular
free play - at the playground or in your backyard, may be equally effective,
if not more so. Non-competitive play sometimes results in more moderateto-vigorous physical activity than competitive sports, where some children
may spend significant amounts of time on the sidelines. In light of this, a
statement by fitness guru Richard Simmons seems apropos: “Everyone is not
a jock. Everyone cannot play sports. Everyone cannot run. But everyone
can be fit.”
My 19 year-old daughter, a non-athlete who is a freshman at Ohio State,
recently informed me that she signed up for intramural soccer and that she
has discovered a proclivity for elliptical machines. I could not be more
pleased that she now calls/texts me regularly to let me know about her
games – and how many miles she logs on the machine.
I encourage you to keep an eye on your child’s physical activity level, for
academic as well as health reasons. If you have questions on how to help
him/her improve in this area, please contact our fitness education teacher,
Mr. Engelkamp.
Sincerely,
Thomas S. Melvin

"Diversity Means…" was the theme for the 2011-12 PTA
Reflections Contest. We reported earlier in the year
that we had four students move on to the Hamilton
County level of the competition, Katelyn Evans, Erin
Kumler, Carly Shiplett and Kylie Meyer. We also had
two students that received honorable mention at the
Oak Hills level, Ellye Steinberg and Kosta Brunson.
The results are in and we now have two Springmyer
students moving on to the State level!
Congratulations to Carly Shiplett and Kylie Meyer, for
winning at the Hamilton County Level. We look
forward to hearing their results.
All Springmyer participants' work will be on display at the Best
of Oak Hills, March 1-3. The works are displayed in the lobby
and are available for open viewing. The four students that
moved on to Hamilton County will also be displayed
February 14th and the Hamilton County Council Open
House. Contact Laura Kumler, [email protected], for
times and directions.

On Thursday, January 12, 2012, The Cincinnati Zoo presented their "Wings of
Wonder" program. The zoo came in and did a small show for the AM kindergarten
students and then came back with a big show for the rest of the school. The
kids were treated to a fabulous show featuring an owl, penguin, macaws, and many
other species of birds. This was PTA's reward to all students hard work and
celebrated the end of the 2nd quarter.
