December 29, 2013
Reflections
Political refugees, displaced persons, war and genocide refugees, genocide victims. Nothing new here…. Since
before Christ and since, persecution has decimated the human community. We are subject to the whims and hatreds of
others. Warned in a dream, Joseph flees Bethlehem with Jesus and Mary. Herod the king would destroy his rival, the
new-born King of Israel. We know that other babies were massacred. For Jesus, Mary and Joseph it is exile in Egypt.
In the isolation and poverty of refugee camps, parents and children struggle to maintain a way of life destroyed
by war, famine and political and religious wars. The list is endless: Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Kurdistan, Somalia, Congo,
Bosnia, Kosovo… The Holy Family is one with these unfortunate peoples. As church we are family, as one people with
all these millions of unfortunate people. We dream of peace!
As we gather in our various family groups, Saint Paul call us to a better way of life, rich in patience, love and
unity. Rich in Christ, rich in his Word of Life.
On the Parish Plate (repeat)
The tree removal project should begin January 6th. This should ease the threat to church walls, sidewalks and
other amenities.
We are looking at putting in an ADA restroom at church level and completely reconstructing the Rohan Hall
restrooms if our savings permit.
There is also the matter of doing our part for the retaining wall on San Carlos Avenue—part of which is a parish
property responsibility.
Stewardship: Time, Talent, and Treasure (repeat)
The Parish Reserve Study is in printed form—a copy each for the diocese, the parish, and the school. It will
provide oversight from all leadership on the well-being of the parish plant into the future.
The Parish Reserve Report will call for greater savings in the near future if we wish to keep Saint Jerome a viable, safe
place to study the faith, worship and socialize as a parish family. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
As we face the new year, I ask that every member of the parish family increase their weekly contribution to the
first collection. A 3% to 5% tithe of personal income would help the parish immensely. Another earlier formula used is
to contribute one hour’s wages per week. Do not depend on your neighbor to carry the burden for you.
A steady flow of parish income helps to meet the bills and perhaps may permit a modest savings program.
Don A. Diani+
We have lost another Saint Jerome angel. Don was my best cheerleader. I miss his supportive care and love for
me as his pastor. Always cheerful, optimistic looking ahead to the future. Dear Don, to quote you, “You’re the best!”.
Miss you, buddy….

HELP TO KEEP THE CHURCH TIDY! Please help us to keep the church tidy by placing the missals and music books
back in the racks. Please be do not leave bulletins in the pews. It becomes time-consuming for one person to straighten
up the church after the 11:00am Mass on Sundays, and your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
REMEMBER SAINT JEROME IN YOUR WILL OR LIVING TRUST Please remember Saint Jerome parish in your
last will or living trust. We are a small parish in need of everyone’s support. Several major bequests in 2012 have made
a major difference in addressing pressing needs. Thank you for your kindness and consideration!
