Advisors not only help students register for classes or help choose a major, but Runyan also said they could guide students through policies, as well as helping them focus on a “fresh start.” “We also help students Isaac Williams | Multimedia Director advisors, who get into academic along with a leadership team probation or dismissal, trying of advising managers. No other Sinclair team has had this great of a start, mainly due to most of their players being sophomores and having the experience needed to perform this well. Before heading down to Cincinnati to play against a team that Price has highly praised as being one of the tougher teams they go against. Price has said before “teams don’t just go down there and win.” Not only did they win, but they man-handled them and took all the air out of whatever game plan they had. According to Price, the plan of “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” Dr. Martin Cincinnati State was to take away their best scorer in Reshardd Harris. And it worked, Harris only played for 18 minutes, though he put up 14 points in the game. What Cincinnati State didn’t account for was they have a whole roster that can put up points and shut teams down. “Reshardd had two quick fouls in the first half and only played a total of four or five minutes in the first half. Alright, congratulations. We have seven guys averaging double figures. You just spent all of your energy taking one of seven guys away,” said Price. That didn’t stop the Pride from having a 22 point lead with four minutes left to go. All five starters reached 10 points or more, with Marcellous Washington leading with Luther King Jr. said. On Monday, Sinclair and Dayton celebrated with the honorary Breakfast and Walk. 16 points. Steven Perriere led the team in rebounds with 11 and Manny Powell Jr. had a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists. Many teams have thrown different looks and strategies at the Pride in order to slow them down. That has failed and having efficient practices and know what Price wants is a big factor in that. “I think it comes down to guys who have been in the system for two years. The biggest thing is having guards that understand your head coaching philosophies. I don’t have to call anything out—they know what I want,” said Price. The Pride were ranked third in the nation as of January 11. However, Johnson County out of Kansas has lost since the last rankings, which put Sinclair as the second ranked team in the NCJAA Division II. Price isn’t commenting on whether or not the Pride deserve to be number one or if they should be named the best in Division II. “It isn’t up to me. I’ll tell you what I think at the end of the year,” said Price. The Pride played one home game against Clark State Community College on the Jan. 13 and donminated. Their next game is against conference rival Cuyahoga on January 16. Did you use your day off in the spirit of Dr. King? For those interested in community Contact, connect, communicate continued from front some very basic kinds of personal interaction to see where the challenges are.” Runyan said if it goes much further than basic personal problems, then they can refer students to counseling. Colleges are complex, according to Runyon. There are a lot of requirements for programs and majors in order to make sure students are getting the proper training for their future careers. “I’ve gotten a lot of help from [academic advising]. There’s a lot of stuff I didn’t know about the music program, so they’ve showed me where to go for everything,” Corinne Wampler, Music major said.”I agree, they’ve helped a lot,” Sharon Galeneo, Music major added. To make sure students are familiar with navigating through the curriculum, as well as understanding Sinclair’s policies, Runyan said academic advising is a great connection to have at Sinclair. “To do it by yourself can be a real challenge, and you can mess yourself up pretty bad if you aren’t careful,” Runyan said. “There are ways to get off track and out of sequence and our advisors can help you.” It is possible to graduate without using the resourc- service opportunities, consider visiting the Office of Student and Community Engagement, across from the Clarion office in the zero level of Building 8. Dayton continues to honor the legacy of Dr. King, in the spirit of “nonviolence, justice, peace and equality.” Send us or tag us in your photos from the March and Rally on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. es that the center provides, but Runyan doesn’t suggest taking that route. However, he said that students could plan out their MAP and then look it over with their advisor, in order to be proactive. “We have students who choose not to make use of our services, but over 90 percent of our new services in fall term did come into advising,” Runyan said. “Once they get that plan, we call it a MAP, My Academic Plan, then they know what to take—we can provide a lot of help making sure they are on the right track.” The center is moving into “caseload management,” meaning each student is assigned a specific advisor, so they are consistently meeting with the same person in order to achieve familiarity. One of the biggest changes academic advising is embracing is a new system to document data in order to help students stay on track, while predicting challenges the students may face that could cause conflict, according to Runyan. “We are working with a software vendor to be able to look at all of our data, even things like when was the last time you swiped for parking or went down to the cafeteria, and then use that data to say ‘oh it doesn’t look like you’re coming to campus like you used to, is there something that we can do to help;’ we call it data analytics,” Runyan said. Communication is key to ensure that students are getting the most out of their advising sessions. Runyan said it’s important that advisors know the intentions of a student, and that they have the latest information about their progress. Julio Camacho, Liberal Arts, and Jerett Berger, Mechanical Engineering agree the center points students in the right direction, but it’s important to plan ahead. Runyan said that advising has changed their schedule to make more time throughout the day for students. Advising sessions are mainly by appointment only, in order for longer sessions and to cut down on the number of errors. The number one goal for academic advising is to make sure students are successful. In order to make that happen, students should be open about their struggles and progress, according to Runyan. It’s a two-way street essentially. “Be straight up with your advisor. If you have a challenge and you don’t think you’re going to pass something, talking with your advisor about it is a good first start,” Runyan said. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Contributed by Wikimedia PAGE 3 JANUARY 19 Aid for FinAid continued from front room and board and book fees will differ from school to school. Your Financial Need is that remaining balance. Financial Aid refers to the conglomerate of grants, work-study, loan options and award from the federal government towards your education. Your Award Letter is viewed by the Web Advisor option on my.sinclair.edu, located under the student tab and then found under the financial aid section. This letter will tell you what your entitlements have been found to be. You can see your loan options, subsidized or unsubsidized, any award of funds and other options. Be sure to decipher what the different aids are, as your loan options will often distort what I consider the actual, concrete aid you can receive at no charge. Terms aren’t everything you need to be familiar with to tackle financial aid, unfortunately. You also need to be aware of a few concepts, and the earlier the better. Your award is split for the year, often unevenly. Within that financial Aid Award Letter, you will see the lump sum of your aid. This is for the entire period of the FAFSA. That means, for most schools that run semesters, this aid will be split between the Spring and Fall terms. The aid may be split unevenly depending on your schedule. Don’t budget to have all of that money available towards tuition, only to find out you will receive most of it the Fall term. Be your own advocate—prepare for the customer service comparable to the DMV. Chances are, even the best people are not going to go out of their way to make sure you understand or that you leave with your questions answered. There are some 30,000 students at Sinclair Community College, you are one. I can’t stress this enough, especially to new students. You need to handle this stuff NOW. If you have questions, you NEED to ask and you should not leave until you understand and have a plan. Don’t get tricked into simply heading out early. It is paramount to have a plan. You don’t want to spend more of your time in the back and forth. One visit can turn into 13 all too quickly. Financial Aid workers are people, and people are prone to mistakes. We are only human. However, like all professions, these people are trained professionals who it is reasonable to expect decent service from. It is perfectly fair to expect that your concerns be addressed, that the work you ask of them be performed in a timely manner, and that they work to the best of their abilities to minimize inconveniences and human error. If you asked them to do something, check in in a few days if you haven’t heard from them, or if they promised to contact you. It is not unusual for papers to end up in the wrong place, for them to be overlooked or lost in the void somewhere. This is your sensitive information most often, you should take steps to protect yourself. None of this means that you should ever forget that mistakes happen. You can be irate and express your dissatisfaction, but remained focused on your goal: getting your education. Stay focused, actualize your plan and if someone messes up, problem-solve, it is much more effective than wasting your time being angry. Here’s the kicker: if mistakes happen, it can mess up your aid for the entire semester. It can push back the process by weeks, and unfortunately months in some cases. This means, in some cases, you won’t receive your award until the refund periods at the end of the semester. If you filled something out wrong once, you may not get aid. If they processed something incorrectly, or slacked off, you may not get your aid until the thirteenth week of class. The response to an unfortunate situation like that is usually good luck and move along. Be persistent and if misfortune’s on your side you’ve got to reschedule or tough it out. Do everything you can early. Make sure every form is filled out fully. Make sure your tax information is filed correctly. Take every form with you they could possibly ask for, and if you don’t have what they need go back at the very next convenience to submit it. Ask for confirmation that the forms have been received, as you will not see the same advisor each visit. The longer the game of telephone goes on the more likely the mistakes are to happen. Know key locations like the Federal Building in Dayton to acquire tax documents. There was a cyber security hack that left students in 2015 without an electronic access to these documents, meaning students had to retrieve them in person. Be prepared, the stress from handling the financial aid or the lack of financial aid can distract you from your studies. Keep focused on your education and be proactive. PAGE 4 Abdo, Mandi R. However, she finds enjoyment in the challenges she faces. She said she thinks many people find dance to be glamorous because of the tutus and tiaras, but it’s much more than that—it’s truly blood, sweat and tears, along with pushing yourself beyond the limits. “You get home at night or on your day off and all you want to do is relax. But it is nice to work on something else and learn about new things,” Catalana said. “I think going to school at this time of being a dancer only helps to make you more wellrounded as an artist and person. “ et at the studio, I head to the gym and then home to eat, ice injuries, and study or do homework.” Catalana and Slack agree that it’s becoming more common to go to college because of the wide opportunities it offers, but it’s still considered to be nontraditional for dancers, especially professional dancers. “I think it’s important to start focusing on a career when you realize how short the career of a professional dancer is—also, injuries happen and you never know what circumstances can take you out of the field,” Catalana said. Slack, a Health and Science major, who hopes to pursue a physical therapist assistant degree, and Catalana, Liberal Arts major, both agree that earning a degree can open the door to other opportunities. “For me, working professionally right out of high school has helped me to learn better communication skills and to make better choices,” Slack said. “Hopefully, [getting my degree] will help me to retire scenery on the big screen. We love to watch stories play out before our eyes rather it’s good or bad. Hollywood has left it’s mark on the world and in our hearts forever but did you know a lot of your favorite movies and TV shows are not shot in Hollywood? While some believe the writing of the film industry has became sloppy and careless Hollywood has up’d it’s Aside from the obstacles, Catalana said her favorite part about dancing is telling a story through movement and music— not words. “There is so much chatter in life and dancing is a way to express without words,” Catalana said. Throughout all of the struggles and pain that not only dance throws their way, but also life, Slack and Catalana still find the beauty in ballet. The integrity and the challenge of the ballet world have helped both become better people in general, while learning how to face their fears, as well as truly expressing themselves. K professional career at 18. “When I was about 14, I realized that I wanted to dance professionally. Before that, I didn’t think I would be able to do it because of how competitive it is to get jobs, but around 14 my drive became so intense that I told myself that I would do whatever it took to try to dance professionally,” Catalana said. Dance navigated Slack’s decision about how she spent her time and who her friends were, which resulted in her attending an arts boarding high school to further her dance education and technique. “I realized this is what I am going to do with my life,” Slack said. A normal day for Catalana and Slack typically starts at 8:30 a.m. with an hour and a half ballet class to focus on technique, while warming up for the rest of the day. Following the ballet class is a five to six hour rehearsal schedule for upcoming shows, which are normally performed at The Victoria Theater or The Schuster Center. “A normal day is waking up three hours before class begins to eat breakfast, ice feet, heat my back, and then show up to the studio to warm-up before class,” Slack said. “After the work is done Reporter an Courtney Catalana and Halliet Slack spend most of their time at the barre—the ballet barre, that is. Both are professional ballerinas at Dayton Ballet, as well as students at Sinclair Community College, who give credit to their ballet training for being driven to accomplish anything that is pirouetted their way. “The mental work is probably the most challenging. It takes a lot of thought and mental preparation to do what we do,” Catalana said. “You have to remember a lot of choreography and you have to think quickly on your feet all the time.” Not only is there a significant amount of stress put on dancers bodies, but it is also a test of how strong they are mentally and emotionally, according to Catalana. It’s not just about strength and motivation—it’s also about grace. “Life as a dancer is very demanding physically, mentally and emotionally; it can also be stressful and competitive,” Slack said. “I would say that it is as demanding as it appears to outsiders.” Pursuing a career as a professional dancer is fast-paced and short, according to Slack. Many dancers don’t dance past a ten-year career because of how demanding it is on the body; however, Slack is one who is going against the odds. She has been dancing professionally for 18 years. The majority of professional dancers start dancing at a young age. Catalana said she started at the age of three, but didn’t get serious about ballet until the age of 10, and then began her Su s Executive Editor game when it comes to actually filming. I’m going to take you around the United States to other lucky places that got the Hollywood buzz over the years. We’ll also be going out of country to Hollywood’s next biggest filming place. •New York: The big Apple is first on our list. Many know it as the fashion capital of the world but with its big city glamour and nonstop action, Hollywood has claimed this area for many movies and scenes. The blockbuster hit The Godfather made its home right there in the city and through the state. Comedian by Gabrielle Sharp tri bu te d There was a lot to watch Sunday night at The Golden Globes from the Red Carpet—the show itself all the way into the after parties. I will be breaking down the show from the host to the fashion, and all the celebs that are getting dissed and of course who took home those golden globes. The Red Carpet: The night kicked off in the most famous way any Hollywood award show would, but it was on fire with good looks and bad this year. Among the best dressed people on the carpet were Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Lopez, and Jaimie Alexander. However, everyone’s eyes were on the worst dressed, questioning what they were even wearing. Cate Blanchett showed up in a pink dress that looked halfway ready for the bedroom, while the other half looked like it was made out of My Little Pony hair. Heidi Klum looked more dressed for a New Year’s Eve party in her flashy silver dress. Then there was the great Jane Fonda, who looked like a crumbled up fancy napkin flowing down the carpet. It was a night to watch on the carpet for sure. The Revenant: It was a good night for Leonardo DiCaprio, dissing her win, but really everyone said he was just not ready to get bumped and he was laughing it off—it meant nothing. Winners: Besides the show stealer, The Revenant, other big names received awards as well. Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs): Best Supporting Role Performance by an Actress Matt Damon (The Martian): Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Comedy Sylvester Stallone (Creed): Best Supporting Role Performance by an Actor Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs): Best ScreenplayMotion Picture Taraji P. Henson (Empire): Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend): Best Performance Musical TV Series Mr. Robot: Best TV Drama Series Jennifer Lawrence (Joy): Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture After the Show: There was tons of parties being hit up after the award show, but the press interview was where fans of Jennifer Lawrence started talking. A reporter was on his phone during the whole interview, and when Jennifer stood up to him and told him to do his job everyone started hitting her with backlash. Honestly, Lawrence wasn’t being rude to the man, although she made very clear points to him. The show was great to watch with huge wins, along with a funny host, Ricky Gervais. Emily Culbertson on Reporter and the cast of “The Revenant,” as they took home the most awards of the night winning three globes. DiCaprio won Best Actor in a drama, the movie itself won for Best Drama Motion Picture, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu won for Best Director of a Motion Picture. That wasn’t the end of the night for DiCaprio himself though. When Lady Gaga went to the stage to get her first Golden Globe, she seemingly Beyond Hollywood C Emily Culbertson At the barre “The most rewarding part about dancing is that I am able to do it as a career,” Slack said. “It is an art form that keeps you honest, makes you face challenges with yourself, and can help you escape, grieve or rejoice.” Adam Sandler also took to New York to film one of his classics “Mr. Deeds.” Central Park has also played many scene on the big screen in movies like “Letters to Juliet,” “The Happening,” “Remember Me,” and many more. TV also lives there with huge shows like “Project Runway,” “2 Broke Girls,” “King of Queens,” and “Friends.” New York has became quite the magical place. •Georgia: The lands of Georgia have been getting the film invasion over the last years. Everyone knows television most famous apocalypse show “The Walking Dead” has been filming there for six years now but the film industry also got a taste of the South as well. Huge film hit “The Hunger Games” have been filming all four movies in the state causing quite the uproar. As the districts get ready to take down the capital many other movies have been filmed there as well such as “Blended,” “The Internship,” “The Crazies,” “The Blindside,” and “Need for Speed.” •Hawaii: The beautiful islands have become the hot spot for many movies lately. With all the scenic areas around the islands it makes for a prefect movie getaway spot. “Jurassic Park” was a huge grossing movie over the years that was filmed in the Hawaiian Islands and still to this day it is one of the biggest movies made with “Jurassic World.” Other memorable movies made on the gorgeous islands include “50 First Dates,” “The Descendants,” “Just Go With It,” and many more. TV show hit “Lost” was also filmed in the jungle of the islands creating quit the tour spot. •Canada: Canada has become the next Hollywood with numerous filming locations all over the map. Just to name a few huge hits that were made there include “The Incredible Hulk,” “Mean Girls,” “Broke Back Mountain,” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Canada also gave their hand out to help with parts of films that range anywhere from “Twilight” to “Titanic.” If your ever looking for a fun place to vacation to and you love the movies on the big screen I suggest checking out these places. All your powers of seduction suddenly seem to have run dry. This is because the sun is moving opposite your sign for a while. Chill out, hang out with your friends and avoid imposing your personal agenda The sun will be in your sign for four weeks, and this is your spiritual new year. It’s a great period for making resolutions, letting go of the past and focusing on creating a magnificent future for yourself. Don’t let anybody hold you back. on others. Pisces: Feb. 19 – March 20 Jupiter has been opposite your sign for a while, and this means that you’re still seeking greater stability and kindness in your life. Don’t let people who aren’t particularly nice to be too close to you. You deserve to be surrounded by loving, supportive people. SUDOKUPUZZLE The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There are three very simple constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game: • Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order. • Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order. • Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9. Every Sudoku game begins with some squares already filled in, and the difficulty of each game is due to how many squares are filled in. The more squares that are known, the easier it is to figure out which numbers go in the open squares. As you fill in squares Linda C. Black Horoscopes: by Nancy Black Distributed by MCT Information Services correctly, options for the remaining squares are narrowed and it becomes easier to fill them in. Sudoku Tips: Start by looking for numbers that occur frequently in the initial puzzle. For example, say you have a lot of 5’s in the initial puzzle. Look for the 3x3 box where there is no 5. Look for 5’s in other rows and columns that can help you eliminate where the 5 might go in tht box. If there is a 5 in columns 1 and 2, then there can’t be a 5 anywhere else in either of those columns. You know then that whatever leftmost 3x3 box that is missing a 5 must have it go in column 3. If you can eliminate all the possibilities in that box except for 1 square, you’ve got it down! Aries: March 21 – April 19 You’re madly attracted to somebody who is your complete opposite. This person could hold different political, religious or cultural views than you have, yet you are fascinated by him or her. Venus says explore a dialogue with this cutie. Taurus: April 20 – May 20 You’re in business and career mode as Jupiter enhances your ambition. Stay focused on increasing your influence and your cash flow, and you’ll experience great progress over the next few months. Just don’t neglect your honey. Gemini: May 21 – June 21 You’re dealing with custody agreements, royalty payments or child support. Make sure that you’re receiving all the money that is due to you. The moon says don’t allow emotional attachment to blind you to the fact that you need to look out for your own interests. Virgo: Aug. 23 – Sept. 22 With Venus moving into a friendly sign, you’re feeling more flirtatious than usual. You’ll want to experience some sexual heat with somebody. If you’re single, you’ll engage in lusty dialogue with people. If you’re in a relationship, you’ll encourage your honey to act sexier. Libra: Sept. 23 – Oct. 23 A bouncy sun is increasing your confidence. You’ll find it easier to go to that job interview, to impress new friends or to seduce that hot young thing you’ve been flirting with. Your charisma will be super strong and others will fall under your spell. Scorpio: Oct. 24 – Nov. 21 A moon opposition could create some weirdness. One minute, you’re perfectly happy with your current sweetheart. The next minute, you’re daydreaming about dating somebody else. It’s OK to feel this internal conflict; just wait it out. Sagittarius: Nov. 22 – Dec. 21 You’re attracted to two people at once, which is never easy. The moon is creating some romantic schizophrenia. Don’t make any promises you can’t keep. And try not to make any major emotional commitments just now until you feel more centered. Cancer: June 22 – July 22 Capricorn: Dec. 22 – Jan.19 Venus is moving opposite your sign for a few weeks, and this means that romance might feel weird. It’s best not to make any major decisions. Don’t get engaged. Don’t move in with your lover. Don’t decide to suddenly have a kid with somebody. Venus is moving into your sign, and this will create a spirit of peace in your romantic life. If you’re single, you’ll feel more Zen about it. You know your soul mate will manifest at the perfect time. If you’re in a relationship, you’ll feel more gratitude and love for your honey.
