After Southwest USA beat Australia 5-2 both teams huddled in a circle and did cheers in honor of both teams and if not for the scoreboard there would be no indication of who the winner was. “We shared a float actually with Southwest at the grand slam parade so there was a lot of familiarity from the boys through going through the parade together and riding the bus home together,” said Head Coach Glen Tovey. The familiarity did not stop there as one youngster in particular from Corpus Christi, Texas made a lasting impression on Tovey. “There was a young man on their team Jesus Ortiz who actually when I got on the bus (after the parade) stood straight up and said please sit here sir. There are a couple young men in the international grove that have made a really strong impression on me. That young man is definitely one of them and it was really fun to play him today.” Ortiz and his mates from Texas fell behind Perth 2-0 when Jake Sheldon doubled and cleared the bases with the first ever RBI for Australia and the first runs in Michael Tovey and Maverick Hamilton who singled and were hit by a pitch. “We have broken the donut. There is converted by Web2PDFConvert.com another box complete for the Australian people at the Little League World Series. It was a special moment for us. My son scored the first run for Australia so it was pretty special one for a dad and a head coach,” a beaming Tovey exclaimed. The Australian lead was short lived as Southwest dialed up the long ball hitting two homers in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff walk and a pair of singles the bases were loaded when Kieran Hall uncorked a wild pitch to score the first run. Jacob Cruz who went 3 for 3 hit the first homerun a 3-run shot that gave the Texans the lead. Jacob Garza followed with a solo shot and neither team would score again. Australia would threaten in the last inning getting a 1-out base runner when Sheldon was hit by a pitch but Juan Sosa struck out the next three batters to end the game. After the teams exchanged handshakes the two clubs circled in to one big huddle and showed the Little League spirit that makes Williamsport so different from any other place. “There was a lot of spirit and camaraderie actually before we went into this game and it was a beautiful thing to see and ended up even more special than we thought it might be,” said Tovey. The Little League World Series has become a huge learning experience for the entire baseball family of WA. “I have grown as a manager, I have grown as a coach and I have grown as a human being and it has been an amazing experience. Thank God for the experience it has been absolutely amazing.” said Tovey. There is pride on display not just for Australia but for baseball WA with the trip to the Little League World Series. “We are definitely passionate people in Australia and Western Australia and it is great that is on display and it has shown for what it is. We wanted to do our best when we came out here and after shaking off the nerves in game one we have shown we can have a go,” said the smiling Perth Head Coach. When Australia set out on this journey they wanted to show they belonged on the world stage. “I think the way we have played and the way we have carried ourselves the way we competed with those we played against has been well and truly to my expectations or even greater. Today was just an awesome performance for the boys. We realize that ten and a half months of hard work is truly worthwhile and now we feel gratified and a lots been achieved,” said Tovey. The team is not done for the week and have converted by Web2PDFConvert.com plenty to soak in. They will play a friendly game on Wednesday morning against the Czech Republic but not before taking a day trip Tuesday the 20th to Yankee Stadium in New York for the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays day game in the Bronx.
