SafeP lace exis ts to end sexual and stic dome viole n ho ce t ugh ling y, hea safet , prevention and social change. At SafePlace’s Kelly White Family Shelter there is a giant blackboard. On it volunteers painted “Today is a New Day because…” Shelter residents finished the sentence with: • • • • I am safe. Fall 7 times, stand up 8. I can make my own decisions. I get to live the life meant for me. This blackboard (pictured on the cover) reflects SafePlace – resilient, inspired and hopeful. 2010 brought disturbing changes in the rates of sexual and domestic violence in our community and the impact was far reaching. The number of rape exams at the hospital increased from 253 to 345. There were 10 deaths due to family violence. Due to the poor economy, survivors found it difficult to get back on their feet and the length of time people stayed at shelter and in transitional housing increased dramatically. With these events and struggles we grieved, we learned, we acted and then we turned to our clients and…as always…we found inspiration. We learned. More people need our help than are currently coming to us. We must spread the word. We acted. We doubled our community education staff, added a community organizer, increased our focus on communications and worked hard to increase awareness about sexual and domestic violence and about SafePlace. We were inspired. The opposite of sexual and domestic violence is safe, healthy and respectful relationships. People in our community spoke out when they witnessed violence. Volunteers and donors committed their resources to help us do this work. And over and over, we witnessed the changes made by survivors as they moved toward a safe and empowered future. SafePlace is so grateful for all of the generous supporters who help survivors create their New Day. Thank you! They coordinated shelter, counseling services, legal services for survivors of sexual and domestic violence and hospital accompaniment for rape survivors. The hotline is just one of many ways for clients to access SafePlace. Once safety is obtained, the next step is healing and moving on to a new day. SafePlace provides a wide array of helpful services to meet their specific needs. These include shelter, transitional housing, counseling, resource advocacy, life skills and children’s programming just to name a few. t me it is alright, that it w and taugh asn’t m e.” 12,868 calls on the hotline; 99% of callers reported reduced feelings of crisis or increased levels of support 1,004 people received advocacy in the legal system 345 rape survivors were accompanied at area hospitals 211 individuals served through our supportive housing program avoided homelessness and transitioned to self-sufficiency 61 Deaf or hard-of-hearing clients received services 11,269 middle and high school students participated in prevention activities or presentations through Expect Respect ... ou Photo credits: Aurora Reyes, David Saenz, Unknown r programs ed u cate othe rs. e to liv “I am growing, surviving and learning a d in a n i ga hoose life. This expansion significantly increased our reach. Our goal is to teach others to recognize warning signs and respond safely with courage. 1,874 people participated in training related to violence against people with disabilities Reaching out to youth is integral in creating change for the future and ending sexual and domestic violence. SafePlace’s award-winning Expect Respect program focuses on teen dating violence prevention. Expect Respect is currently being evaluated by the Centers for Disease Control and hopes to be the second evidence-based teen dating violence prevention program in the nation. 763 youth in 30 schools were counseled through the Expect Respect program SafePlace is committed to offering its programs to all affected by sexual and domestic violence in our area and has developed specialized services for those in populations at increased risk for violence. Individuals with disabilities, professionals and family members participated in training related to violence against people with disabilities. We additionally provide specialized services in American Sign Language to Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients. 2,681 professionals working with youth received training 38,673 adults participated in presentations, trainings or awareness events Throughout the year, more than 6,750 individuals participated in SafePlace community events More than 24,000 volunteer hours were logged in 2010 . .. ou Photo credits: Katie Mock, David Saenz supports us y rc . ommunit “Bec ot . In 2010, hundreds of volunteers played key roles. They accompanied survivors at local hospitals, supported individuals at the courthouse and worked with youth in shelter, transitional housing and in the schools. Volunteers and staff planned and coordinated fundraising and outreach events. Volunteers staffed community education booths, spoke to local organizations and companies, and worked tirelessly to paint, clean and beautify our facilities. Many more donated to and participated in events, gave to mail appeals or through their estates or hosted fundraising events or donation drives. Your support also ensured that clients received enough food, diapers, clothing, school supplies, furniture and holiday gifts to meet their needs. Our supporters are amazing! Thank you.
