bridesmaid Betty Beal, who was murdered by her
husband in 1981, and Betty’s sister Bobbie Beal, who is

following a luminaria-lined path around Mueller Lake
Park.

Whole Foods Lamar Skating Party
Puts Fun on Ice
Whole Foods has long been a generous and creative supporter of SafePlace.
Whether they’re donating food for a Life Skills graduation celebration, or
sending a group of volunteers to re-mulch a playground, they find meaningful
ways to improve the lives of the people we serve.
This winter, Whole Foods treated the kids living on our campus to a two-hour
private skating party at their rooftop rink. “For many of the kids, this was their
first time ice skating,” explains Children’s Services Director Yvette Mendoza
Rouen. “They were so resilient and brave, skating, falling, and getting right back
up. They were unbelievably good at it! We’ve never had the opportunity to take a
group ice skating before, because it would be too expensive. Everyone laughed
a lot and had a great time.”

Denim Day is April 23, 2014
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and a great
way to participate and raise awareness is to wear denim
on April 23, Denim Day.
Sexual assault survivors often find themselves put on trial, asked “what were you wearing, how much did you
have to drink, why were you there?” When people are mugged, no one blames them for inviting the crime by
carrying a wallet. But our society often responds to survivors of sexual assault with mistrust and suspicion,
convinced that they aren’t telling the truth or did something to invite the crime.
Wear denim on April 23 and show your commitment to ending rape culture and victim blaming.

Families who come to SafePlace often need more than a few weeks in our emergency shelter to be able to truly
rebuild their lives in safety. At SafePlace, extensive transitional services are available to survivors through our
Supportive Housing Program, a 16-week Life Skills course, counseling, child care, and assistance with financial
and employment planning.
