Dear Friends of SafePlace,
2013 was filled with good news for SafePlace:
• A strong and sound financial position;
• The launch of PlanetSafe, a collaborative project with Travis County that
provides safe supervised visitation and children’s exchange services to
families who have experienced domestic violence;
• The fact that our dedicated staff met 100% of the outcome goals that were
set for our clients;
• Our work with numerous community organizations in collaboration to
expand our reach;
• And, of course, the 5,453 people we served in our community who, thanks
to your generous support, moved from fear and despair toward hope and
confidence.
We have made enormous strides in our prevention efforts and creating effective
pathways for intervention across multiple systems. But the sad truth is that
women, children, and men continue to be victimized by sexual assault and
domestic violence. And we also face the reality that SafePlace services aren’t
keeping pace with the growth of Austin’s population.
We continue to offer immediate assistance to ensure safety, while maintaining
waiting lists for all of our programs, both non-residential and residential. We
work creatively every day to provide the same level of services to increasing
numbers of people.
As we look back on 2013, we are filled with gratitude for all the supporters and
collaborators who help to fulfill SafePlace’s mission. It is only with your support
that we are able to meet as much of our growing community’s need as we do,
while we also work to reduce that need through innovative abuse prevention
programs.
As we enter our 40th year of service to the Austin community, I’m very proud of
what we’ve accomplished together. Thank you.
In Peace,
Julia Spann

A project of Travis County in collaboration with SafePlace
May 2013 marked an important milestone for SafePlace: in collaboration with
Travis County, we opened PlanetSafe, a new program that provides safe child
visitation and exchange services to families with a history of violence. The
culmination of several years of planning, PlanetSafe closes a dangerous gap
in safety for parents and children trying to establish violence-free lives. A case
manager on-site can help connect either parent to other community services or
assistance. But most importantly, PlanetSafe shields children who have already
been exposed to violence from further emotional hardship or trauma.
“Children deserve to know that their safety and the safety of every member
of their family isn’t at risk during visits with a non-custodial parent,” explains
Executive Director Julia Spann. “And parents who are trying to escape the cycle
of violence should not be further victimized as they simply comply with court
orders.”
Services are provided on a sliding scale basis and begin at $5. In the first seven
months of operation, PlanetSafe exceeded its service goal by 20%, providing 214
supervised visits or exchanges.

NOW THAT I AM AN ADULT,
I am proud to support SafePlace, because I know
first hand how their services
CAN CHANGE LIVES.
When I was about four or five years old, I attended counseling sessions
at what was then the Center for Battered Women, now SafePlace. I was
young, but definitely aware of what was going on in my family.
I was scared and hurt. Looking back, I can see that I was living in an
environment where there was no hope and plenty of uncertainty. But
coming to SafePlace changed all that for me. It was a place filled with
loving people who cared about me and helped me in my most difficult
time. I remember one year SafePlace staff actually gave us Christmas
presents. I thought that was the coolest thing!
For the first time in my life, I was surrounded by people who said “Yes you can, you can do
it. You can change your life, you can make it better.” My counselors at SafePlace taught
me what it means to be a human. I took life lessons from those counseling sessions that I
have turned to again and again.
Now that I’m an adult, I am proud to support SafePlace, because I know first hand how their
services can change lives. They gave me the idea that the world is good and not meant to
be full of pain and hurt. They made me believe that change could happen. And with their
help, my family did build a new and better life. I have so many great things to be thankful
for, and I am proud to give back to the organization that gave me so much as a child.
