Serving Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Franklin, Marion, and Winston Counties Stories Rachel Cabaniss Executive Director “You wouldn’t believe some of the things he has done to me.” We hear a lot of ‘stories’ from all of the people we servehorrifying stories of abuse. While victims feel alone, scared, ashamed…it seems unfathomable to believe that anyone else has experienced their pain. But the stories of abuse are all pretty much the same. The devil is in the details, but the tactics of power and control have not changed. A client talks to the Safeplace Residential Manager about her abuser. Through their conversation and asking questions, the client comes to the realization… “You must know my husband.” “No, I don’t know your husband.” The conversation goes on as they talk about the dynamics of domestic violence, and the client stops and says, “You have to know my husband! You are describing him exactly!” The Residential Manager did not know the client’s husband personally; she had just heard the same story from other victims so many times before. The best person to explain the dynamics of domestic violence and the benefits of Safeplace services in our community is someone who has been a victim and survived. So, we often ask survivors to tell their “story”. The word “story” is indicative of fantasy, not fact. And while it may be easier to remember the horrifying details of abuse as a story to tell, as if it happened to someone else in a made up world, we must recognize that this “story” is someone’s reality. With that reality, we must recognize the reality of abuse that is happening in our community, in our churches, in our places of work, and in our families. With hope, Rachel “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections every year, but when you volunteer, you vote everyday about the kind of community you want to live in.” – Marjorie Moore 2008 Walk A Mile For A Child Sponsors Thank You to all of the following sponsors for making the 6th annual ‘Walk A Mile For A Child’ a success... Serving Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Franklin, Marion, and Winston Counties Walgreens “Charity Superstar” “I was so happy that Walgreens recognized the problem of domestic violence, and I am so proud to work for such a wonderful organization.” “ I just couldn’t believe that happened from one E-mail.” That one E-mail resulted in Kris Brown’s national recognition as a “Super Star Volunteer” by Walgreens. Kris Brown is a Safeplace volunteer and a survivor of domestic violence. The E-mail she is referring to was a nationwide contest among Walgreens employees. Walgreens sponsored the “Charity Superstar Contest” asking employees to explain why they volunteered for agencies and how those agencies had affected their lives. For Kris that was easy. “I wouldn’t be sitting here if it wasn’t for Safeplace.” Kris entered Safeplace’s emergency shelter late in 2005, and she left on New Year’s Eve, “starting my new life with the new year. And when I was ready, I came back to Safeplace as a volunteer.” The “Charity Superstar Contest” was posted nationwide to all Walgreens’ employees. Walgreens then made a contribution to the top five winners. Kris won top prize, and Walgreens made a $2,000 donation to Safeplace, Inc. in her name. “I was so happy for Safeplace when I found out I had won. I was so happy that Walgreens recognized the problem of domestic violence, and I am so proud to work for such a wonderful organization.” Winning the “Charity Superstar Contest” had an even greater result. “The people I work with were able to hear my story, and not only that, they got involved as well. My HR manager, Tina Coffield, got the corporate office to allow flyers with Safeplace’s crisis line number to be posted in the Customer Care Center where I work. The crisis line number is there if they want to take it, and I am there if they want to talk. I think that is the greatest thing from that one E-mail. It can and did make a difference.” April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. In the year 2005 there were over 30,000 cases of child abuse and neglect reported in the state of Alabama. We know that physical and sexual abuse clearly constitute child abuse, but so does neglect, or the failure of parents or other caregivers to provide needed food, clothing and care. We also know that in 70% of the homes were domestic violence occurs a child is being abused. The key to preventing child abuse begins with recognizing the signs and symptoms of child abuse. Unexpected injuries are not the only signs of abuse and neglect. Fear of a certain adult, difficulty trusting others or making friends, sudden changes in eating or sleeping patterns, inappropriate sexual behavior, poor hygiene, problems in school, unsuitable clothing for the weather, and depression are other warning signs that could point to possible abuse. Being able to recognize the warning signs is important, but it is also important to get involved. We have to be a voice in the community and speak out against child abuse and domestic violence. Below are things that you can do to help prevent child abuse. • Volunteer your time Get involved with other parents in the community • Examine your behavior Be a nurturing parent. Use your actions to show children and other adults that arguments can be settled without hitting or yelling. • Educate yourself and others After school activities, parent education classes, and mentoring programs are some of the many ways to help keep children safe from harm. • Know what child abuse is Physical, Sexual, and Emotional. Including Neglect • Teach children their rights When children are taught they are special and that they have a right to be safe, they are less likely to think that abuse is their fault and more likely to report an offender. • Discipline thoughtfully Never discipline your children when you are angry. Give yourself time to calm down. • Report abuse If you witness a child being harmed, see evidence of abuse, or if a child tells you about abuse, make a report to child protective services or the police. Serving Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Franklin, Marion, and Winston Counties Wachovia Banks Join Safeplace’s Sign Project Purple ribbons will soon be displayed in the windows of local branches of Wachovia Bank. Representatives from Wachovia Bank in Colbert and Lauderdale counties recently completed Sign Project training and have joined Safeplace in efforts to reach victims of domestic violence. The Sign Project began as an outreach effort by Safeplace and the Marion County Domestic Violence Task Force. Developed as a response to overcome the isolation often faced by a victim of domestic violence, the Sign Project is key in reaching victims. Trained volunteers working at three branches of Wachovia Bank are now able to assist victims of domestic violence by providing them with information and access to Safeplace services. “We at Wachovia consider our selves a community bank and this project allows us a great opportunity to better serve our community.” Area president Mike McCrary pointed out “We at Wachovia consider ourselves a community bank, and this project allows us a great opportunity to better serve our community. If we can reach one person and help make their life safer, then we’ll gladly do what we can. The people we serve are our greatest Look for ribbons like this one displayed at asset, and we want to serve as more than just a bank. ” Heath Haddock at Safeplace states “The Sign Project is another way for victims to access Safeplace and the services that we offer. Wachovia Bank becoming a Sign Project location is a great example of the community reaching out to help victims of domestic violence, but more importantly Wachovia Bank becomes another resource to people who often feel alone and helpless.” area branches of Wachovia Bank as our Sign Project continues to expand. 23 Years and Still Serving H Linda Cunningham is all smiles as she pre pares dinner for residents staying at Safeplace. er job title may say “house keeper” but that does not describe what she does for Safeplace. The first few days a family enters our emergency housing facility, “Ms. Linda” is there cooking three meals a day. “ I cook so the families can rest and adjust. They still have chores like cleaning their rooms and picking up after themselves, but it’s important during this phase that they focus on themselves.” She is also responsible for keeping our pantry well stocked and organizing individual chores. Basically, she runs our residential facility like a home. After all, it is home to the families we serve. In twenty- three years Ms. Linda has heard some stories. “Boy could I tell you some stories. A lot of times, I’ll just sit down and listen over lunch or dinner, and the ladies will start sharing. I am so lucky because I get to watch these ladies grow, and then they will come back, and I get to see a completely different person. They come back and they share their stories, and then the ones they help: they come back as well.” Ms. Linda says in her twenty- three years at Safeplace the one thing that continues to impress her is “being able to watch lives change. I just do my little part everyday, but I get to see great changes in peoples lives.” Taking a little break from preparing beef hash, potatoes, cabbage and peach cobbler, Ms. Linda smiled and said “I’m just blessed to be able to serve. I’m just thankful to be here.” After twenty- three years, Safeplace is just thankful to have Linda Cunningham on our team.
